Nancy Grace is on the case! Hours after Nolan Xavier Wells‘ funeral, Grace led a ‘Crime Stories’ segment about his disappearance and death. The nearly hour-long segment has since gone viral across social media platforms. While some folks are rejoicing at her highlighting the details of the investigation, others appear to be accusing her of peddling misinformation. Amid that divide, Nancy hopped on social media to clock anyone trolling her interest in Nolan’s case.

What Did Nancy Grace Cover In Her Nolan Wells Segment? 

As mentioned, the ‘Crime Stories’ segment centering Nolan Wells dropped on YouTube on Monday (July 20). In 20 hours, it racked up over 600,000 views, 22,000 likes and more than 9,400 comments. Nancy Grace discussed investigation details shared with the public by either the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, other agencies, Nolan’s parents and their family attorney, Ben Crump.

For 48 minutes, she discussed key topics like the circumstances of his disappearance, questions about the investigation, witness statements, the independent autopsy and expert analysis. Additionally, she interviewed people like Todd Terrell, the president of the United Cajun Navy and Sheryl McCollum, the forensic investigator and founder of Cold Case Investigative Research Institute. She emphasized questions that the investigators should be locked in on. Also, Grace repeatedly highlighted the mystery surrounding Wells’ death and disappearance.

Grace promoted the ‘Crime Stories’ segment about Nolan via X (formerly Twitter) on Monday afternoon. Her 57-second clip has collected nearly half a million views in less than 24 hours and more than 550 retweets. At the time this article was published, there were also 155 replies to the promotional clip.

As mentioned, the responses to her coverage have been divided. Some folks are loving her “on their necks” energy, but others are claiming she’s going IN way too soon and without credible information. In those same X replies, Nancy cleared the air, expressing that it’s worth it to cover Nolan Wells’ case.

These guys were friends and Nolan refused to get back on the boat because he wanted to stay on the island. His phone was not tampered with. Get your facts straight! Another X user (@ElleElvira77) called Nancy Grace a “piece of sh*t,” accused her of spreading misinformation. “Nolan accidentally drowned like people do EVERYDAY! You’re feeding into black supremacist lies! GFY,” the user added. Nancy Grace replied, “I hope it was an accident. No need for name calling.” She told at least four other X users that she too hopes they’re “right” about his death being an accident.

Moreover, she responded to comments about cell reception on Horn Island being the reason Nolan Wells’ device appeared to be missing texts. For example, @demarais7, commented that there weren’t messages “because they didn’t have service in that area and he wasn’t using his phone.” To that Grace replied, “You may be right, but others sent and received messages at the same time from the same place.” When another user (@BKFC_ASC) called her an idiot over her take on the messages, Nancy Grace said, “Sorry you feel investigating Nolan’s death is a waste of your time. I do not.”

And after a separate X user called her a “anti-white, race-baiting freak,” Nancy replied, “Thanks for watching. I’ve been called so much worse!”

General Hospital has Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros) absolutely horrified this week when Drew Cain (Cameron Mathison) reveals that he can speak because that means he can tell anyone and everyone what his wicked wife Willow Tait (Katelyn MacMullen) did to him. So, Nina panics after Drew says to her, “What’s wrong, Nina? Bad news.”

And I suspect based on where Drew and Nina are when he startles her saying that, she might just try and drown him. We’re going to talk about what Nina does and whether Drew survives a drowning attempt.

General Hospital: Drew’s Recovery and Nina’s Desperate Plot

So, we know that Willow and Nina are out of the paralytic they’ve been using to keep Drew locked in, and they are terrified of what he’ll say and what he’ll do once he is mobile. The cops can’t prosecute Willow for shooting him, but they can for causing the stroke and keeping him a prisoner for all these months. And the DA Justine Turner (Nazneen Contractor) would love to do that. And Drew can name Nina as her co-conspirator. So, Willow and Nina could be spending mother-daughter bonding time sharing a cell in Pentonville if Drew gets his way.

So, that’s why Nina’s trying to help Jack Brennan (Chris McKenna) find the black box. It holds evidence that they can use to blackmail Drew into keeping quiet. And we know Ross Cullum (Andrew Hawkes) swiped the black box from Jack’s office and then he stashed it at Wyndemere and then Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart) swiped it from his former home. But he thinks it was Cullum’s box. So, Nina and Jack are searching for it desperately, but they got a little distracted with intimate moments in his room at the Metro Court.

GH Spoilers: Jack Alerts Nina

And summer spoilers say that Jack has a breakthrough and tells Nina, but it may be too late. And another spoiler says Jack gets what he needs from a surprising source, presumably that’s Valentin. Another summer spoiler says that Drew makes a splash. And there’s one more that says Kai Taylor (Jens Austin Astrup) and Trina Robinson (Tabyana Ali) draw the wrong conclusion. And that’s when they learn of a scary incident involving Drew. So, combine all these spoilers with the weekly promo that has Nina with Drew next to the lake at the Quartermaine estate and it’s pretty clear exactly where General Hospital is going this week.

So, this Thursday, according to GH spoilers, Nina gets a wild idea and then Jack gives her bad news on Friday. And if you’re current on GH episodes, you should have seen recast Scout Cain (Kayden Brenna Tokarski), now a teenager, asking Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) if she can swim in the big pond because Scout needs to practice swimming a mile for a charity event. And when Tracy asked her, “Isn’t that dangerous?” Scout reminded Tracy that her dad, Drew, taught her to swim and he’s a Navy Seal.

General Hospital Spoilers: Drew Horrifies Nina

I don’t think that was an incidental mention because of what’s about to happen. Also, Scout asked Tracy, “Can Drew please come to the Q estate and watch her swim?” Even though he’s banned, Tracy agreed to all of it after some hesitation. So, it looks like by Thursday, Nina rolls Drew out to the dock at the Quartermaine estate.

And when she’s parking him, that’s when he speaks to Nina, perhaps after she gets a phone call from Jack saying he doesn’t have anything for her yet. And with Nina getting a wild idea on Thursday, maybe she’s already decided to just tip Drew into the pond.

GH Spoilers: Nina Stages an Accident

But Nina might have second thoughts until Drew speaks to her and then Nina knows, “Oh, whoops. Time is up.” And the spoiler about Drew making a big splash, I suspect, is him going into the pond. And I also suspect that Nina’s going to deliberately leave his wheelchair brake off and have him parked close to the edge.

That way it’ll look like an accident. And once Drew’s in the water, you know, Nina can jump in and act like she’s trying to save him, but he’s heavy and he’s strapped to a wheelchair. And as Scout pointed out, Drew is an excellent swimmer, but he’s strapped to a wheelchair.

Fun fact, in standing water like that versus the ocean, a Navy Seal like Scout’s dad can hold their breath for three to four minutes. They say that five minutes is a myth, but four minutes seems pretty solid for a Navy Seal. And I’m sure Nina set it up so it’d be a roll and a tip. So, if Drew gets a good breath as he’s going in, he could actually survive a while.

General Hospital: Blackmail, Consequences, and Survival

And if you remember when Nina and Willow were talking to Jack Brennan about their options, they were discussing how to handle Drew since they’re pretty much out of paralytic and Jack didn’t have his black box back. He told Nina and Willow that they could always just kill Drew. And Willow got angry and said, “I’m not a killer.” And Jack gave this big eye roll because he knows she put two bullets in Drew’s back. Willow nearly killed her husband before.

But once Nina realizes that time is really up, she’s going to do something drastic. I think she would rather personally risk prison so that she can keep Willow out of it. And I absolutely believe that Nina would kill for Willow. But if Drew just rolls off the dock, Nina might rationalize it as an unfortunate accident, not cold-blooded murder like shooting somebody.

GH Spoilers: Willow in Trouble with Liz

But we also have a spoiler for Friday about Elizabeth Webber (Rebecca Herbst) challenging Willow. And I wonder if that’s about the two strokes at her house or at that point if Drew’s rescued and brought into the General Hospital ER in bad shape. That could be why Liz is grilling her. I mean, if Nina’s lucky, maybe Drew sucks in enough pond water to be unconscious for a couple of days to buy Brennan more time to search.

And I expect Valentin’s going to cut a deal with Jack and give him the black box. And with the Trina and Kai spoiler, I’m sure they’re going to hear about Drew’s pond accident and they may draw the wrong conclusion that Willow tried to kill him again. However, I think Nina does this when Willow is not even in Port Charles. She’s supposed to be taking a trip to DC this week. They made very specific mentions of all these various things that add up to this scenario.

General Hospital Spoilers: Willow in the Clear

If you remember, Willow asked Harrison Chase (Josh Swickard) to go with her because the conference or whatever is about law enforcement, but he turned her down, which was smart. So, Willow might have an incredibly airtight alibi. And I know a lot of fans honestly would like to see Drew go down. If General Hospital killed him off, there would be lots of viewers cheering, but I don’t think there’s a snowball’s chance in heck that he’s going to die. I’m sure it’ll be scary, but I’m certain that Nina’s little murder plot isn’t going to pay off the way that she wants.

I know viewers also want Willow exposed for what she’s done, but I’m not certain that she will be. I do think in the end, Nina and Jack are going to get what they need to blackmail Drew into silence, at least in the short run. Long term, there’s no telling what he might do to Willow and Nina in revenge, even if he can’t out them and have them arrested. Plus, Nina and Jack just got intimate. Even if Nina said it was a one-time only deal, I expect that Jack’s going to keep helping Nina and she may even tell him that she tried to kill Drew and failed. I mean, heck, it was Jack’s idea to begin with, and we know he’s ruthless.

GH Spoilers: Drew Survives Nina’s Murder Attempt

And in the end, obviously, I think we all know Drew is not going to die. He will not drown in the pond. But I don’t think it’ll be for lack of effort on Nina’s part. I do suspect that Drew is rescued, but there may be some kind of trauma. Maybe he’s in a coma for a couple of days. Maybe they put him in a medically induced coma for some reason while he recovers from this near drowning.

That would give Nina and Jack the time they need to get the goods to save Willow’s bacon. We’ll see how it goes, but it looks like Drew is taking an unscheduled swim this week. Hopefully, Nina’s going to wait until Scout is halfway down the lake, you know, closer to that island where she’s going to turn around than a half a mile.

I was looking it up and a wheelchair of that size he’s in for a paralyzed person weighs at least 100 pounds, possibly more. And when you add Cameron Mathison’s muscular physique to that, that would be significant weight holding Drew underwater. But still, I think he’s going to survive. He’s like a cockroach.

Dr. Cheyenne Bryant addressed the controversy about whether or not she holds a doctorate degree by completing a Netflix trend. Bryant clapped back with a video on Instagram on Tuesday, July 21, but it has only fueled more questions about the good doctor.

Dr. Cheyenne Bryant Claps Back

The doctorate controversy began when the life coach made comments questioning the necessity of licensing. She authored the book ‘Live Your Promise: Escape Your Wilderness, Heal Your Pain, So You Can Manifest the Life You Want’ and claims to be a doctor and a psychology expert.

However, she admitted that she does not have an active clinical therapy license, and she refused to show proof of her doctorate degree. In addition, she told The Breakfast Club that she completed the doctoral program at Argosy University, but the school permanently shut down in 2019, and Dr. Bryant (allegedly) claimed that she could no longer access her records.

Fans dragged Bryant over her use of the word “doctor.” Now, in response, Bryant joined the Netflix trend where people make parody videos of the streamer’s dramatic documentaries.

The author shared a video on Instagram of her putting on her alleged doctoral academic regalia with the caption, “Netflix US Your favorite Doc is ready! 🎥👩🏽‍🎓🤏🏾 #DrCheyenneBryant #Netflix.”

Text over the video read, “When Netflix does a documentary on Dr. Cheyenne Bryant, Episode 1 will ask, ‘Is she really a doctor?’ Episodes 2- 10 will investigate why complete jealous envious haters tried to prove she wasn’t.”

Netflix Trend Video Prompts More Controversy

If Bryant sought to end the drama over whether or not she holds a doctorate degree with her video, she did not succeed. After the video was shared on the TSR Instagram page, the Roomies reacted.

During an interview on the FOX5 program ‘The Marissa Mitchell Show,’ Bryant said she doesn’t need to show proof.

“I’ve earned the title, I have multiple degrees and I’m not going to prove anything to anybody and we’re going to leave it just as that,“ she said. “My proof is already in my credentials. My degrees and also more than just my titles, it’s in how effective I’ve been… Standing by it because I earned it, absolutely.”

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is swinging into theaters next week, and Marvel is hard at work marketing the new film. After hyping fans up with a surprise trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, the studio just dropped a new trailer for their latest Spidey film. While the trailer contains several beats we have seen before from earlier trailers, it’s also filled with major surprises and more than a little bit of nostalgia. Ready to watch the trailer and discover all of the spectacular secrets lurking within? Good news, true believer; all you gotta do is keep scrolling!

New Day, Same As The Old Day

The first thing you’ll notice about the new trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day is just how much of the footage in the first half comes from earlier movies. For example, we see some shots of both Peter Parker and Spidey from Homecoming as well as the moment Ned discovers his best friend’s secret identity (and drops that expensive Lego Death Star; man, that’s always painful to watch!). We also get footage from Far From Home, showing how Peter’s relationship with MJ evolved over time. This culminates in footage from No Way Home, where Peter says goodbye to his friend and girlfriend before making the entire world forget who he is. 

This is more than just a nostalgic trip down memory lane; it actually sets up the lonelier, more brooding Spider-Man of Brand New Day. The trailer reveals that Peter’s decision to not reintroduce himself to his friends at the end of No Way Home was a lasting one, and that he has basically dedicated his life to being Spider-Man, 24/7. This sets up a clear arc for the new film: our titular hero will discover the importance of being more than a masked vigilante once he opens his heart again to those he loves. It’s good to know that, beyond the fisticuffs, Brand New Day will have an emotional core.

The Fight Of The Millennium Is Here

Of course, if you’re more interested in fisticuffs and high-flying feats, don’t worry: that’s basically the entire back half of the final trailer. We see Spider-Man hearing about a mysterious, telepathic villain that only he can stop because his Spider-Sense somehow protects him from mind mojo. The telepathic threat is played by Sadie Sink, who most fans assume will be playing Jean Grey. One interesting revelation in this Brand New Day trailer is that she is the one controlling Scorpion during their big fight rather than the armor-powered villain operating on his own.

We also see more of Spider-Man’s highly-anticipated fight with the Hulk, including exciting footage of the Avenger smashing Spider-Man into the side of a skyscraper before flinging him away. We also get what is sure to be a fan-favorite new one-liner: during the transformation, Spider-Man gently asks, “Dr. Banner?” To this, the other man replies, “No Banner, only Hulk!” It’s a fun moment and a quotable line, but it also reveals something important: Sink’s character isn’t directly mind-controlling the Hulk. Instead, she seemingly removed the inhibitor to force the transformation and, possibly, coaxed Hulk into getting even angrier than he normally is.

Jean Grey Confirmed?

Aside from the previously seen footage of Spider-Man rescuing MJ from an unknown threat, the rest of the trailer is almost entirely pure action. Good action, too, showing Spidey taking on a small army of ninjas and uppercutting the Hulk. Fortunately, there’s some of the web-head’s traditional levity in here, like when he asks the ninjas if “we can do this one at a time.” Also, at the very end, Ned geeks out about a report that Spider-Man is nearby; at that exact moment, the hero walks into the room with a jaunty, “Oh yeah? No way, that’s crazy!”

Overall, the latest trailer is another winner. Marvel continues to do a great job of advertising Spider-Man: Brand New Day, a movie which will seemingly combine plenty of action with solid storytelling and more than a few surprises. Will one of those surprises be an unexpected team-up with Jean Grey against the movie’s real Big Bad? There’s only one way to find out: Spider-Man: Brand New Day will make a superhero landing in theaters on July 31.

Don’t lose your head, but Tim Burton‘s most horrifying horror movie is galloping on to a new physical media release this fall. One of his most successful collaborations with Johnny Depp, the film is his most straightforward gothic horror tale; and now, it will be contained in a handsome SteelBook.

Sleepy Hollow is coming to a 4K SteelBook on September 22. Loosely adapted from Washington Irving‘s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Sleepy Hollow was penned by Andrew Kevin Walker (Se7en), and featured Oscar-nominated art direction, cinematography, and costume design. Burton crafted the film as an homage to the classic horror movies of Hammer Films, and boasts an impressive cast of character actors in its supporting cast, including Miranda Richardson, Michael Gambon, Ian McDiarmid, Michael Gough, and Hammer’s own Dracula, Christopher Lee. The film was successful with critics and audiences, garnering a 71% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earning $200 million USD at the box office. The SteelBook also includes a director’s commentary from Tim Burton, the making-of documentary Behind the Legend, and the retrospective featurette Reflections on Sleepy Hollow.

What Is ‘Sleepy Hollow’ About?

Depp stars as Ichabod Crane, a detective with a dark past who’s dispatched to the rural burg of Sleepy Hollow in 1799 to investigate a series of gruesome decapitations. The locals believe the killings are the work of the Headless Horseman, a local legend of a spectral mercenary who was decapitated in the Revolutionary War. Unlike in some tellings of the tale, this Horseman is all too real: he’s an undead Hessian with a mouthful of gnarly teeth, a detachable cranium, and the chilling visage of Christopher Walken. However, there’s an unseen hand controlling the Horseman, and Crane’s head is the next one on their list. Meanwhile, Crane has found romance with local spiritualist Katrina Van Tassel (Christina Ricci), whose family is deeply entangled with the Horseman. Crane is running out of time to solve the mystery, or heads are going to roll…

The Headless Horseman will ride again. Hollow, a new interpretation of the classic tale by Pet Sematary: Bloodlines‘ Lindsey Anderson Beer, is in the works at Sony Pictures; Sydney Sweeney is set to star as Katrina, a woman caught up in a supernatural love triangle.

Jason Statham has to be the single most dependable action when it comes to action movies, and streaming, as a deadly double bill. Even when one of his films struggles to find an audience in cinemas, it rarely stays overlooked for long once it reaches viewers at home, and his latest thriller is proving that point to a tee.

After disappointing at the box office earlier this year, Shelter has officially become one of Prime Video’s biggest movies worldwide, which isn’t a massive surprise because people love binging Statham on streaming, whether it be punching prehistoric sharks, doing drugs off a bathroom floor to keep his heart racing for medicinal reasons, or punching a second prehistoric shark. That gives Shelter an unexpected second life following its underwhelming theatrical run, with audiences now discovering the 107-minute thriller months after its wintry release.

What’s ‘Shelter’ About?

Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, Shelter stars Statham as Michael Mason, a retired MI6 operative living alone on a remote island, basically because he really doesn’t want to be bothered or even receive mail. His carefully isolated existence is disrupted when he selflessly rescues a young girl named Jessie following an accident at sea, but that decision to leave the island exposes his location to his former superior, Stephen Manafort, who has been using a surveillance programme to track him. When armed operatives arrive to take both of them out, the former assassin is forced to return to the violent life he attempted to leave behind. And that’s why we love him. The cast also includes Bodhi Rae Breathnach (The Capture) as Jessie and Bill Nighy (Living) as Manafort.

Collider’s Nate Richard opined in his review of the movie that “Shelter will give Statham devotees exactly what they’re looking for,” although adding, “It isn’t particularly memorable, nor will it launch a franchise, but did it ever need to?”

Shelter earned approximately $53 million worldwide against a reported production budget of $50 million, which fell well below Statham’s recent hits. The Beekeeper earned more than $162 million worldwide, while A Working Manfinished with approximately $89 million.

As is Nolan’s modus operandi, he accomplished this completely in IMAX 70mm, and it was all captured on location, across the globe, taking advantage of some of Earth’s most spectacular landscapes. For any actor, being offered an audition to take part in one of Nolan’s endeavors is a no-brainer, so who among the Greek poem’s ensemble refused the invite — and still made it onto the roster?

It goes without saying that The Odyssey is stacked with talent. Oscar-winners Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway lead the charge as Ithaca’s King Odysseus and Queen Penelope, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day star Tom Holland as their son and heir, Telemachus. For Odysseus’s 10-year voyage across the Mediterranean Sea, he meets a host of characters, friends and foes alike — some with very minor moments in Homer’s tale — and all are brought to life by an ensemble of stars. The movie features Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Jon Bernthal, Lupita Nyong’o, Elliot Page, John Leguizamo, Charlize Theron, Himesh Patel, Mia Goth, and many more.

With The Odyssey officially setting sail in theaters, Perri Nemiroff had the opportunity to sit down with one of those stars, Logan Marshall-Green, who plays Melanthius, for a new episode of Collider Forces, where they revisited some of his most memorable roles to date, and discussed how recently joining Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe, in CBS’s Marshals, continues to exceed his expectations. For this episode, however, all roads lead back to Ithaca, and Marshall-Green took us on his own odyssey, beginning with the harrowing reason behind his turning Nolan’s audition down.

Logan Marshall-Green Never Regrets Trusting His Instincts

“I got called cocky a couple of times.”

While chatting with Nemiroff about the start of his career, Marshall-Green admits, “I got called cocky a couple of times.” He’s referring to a specific few instances when he turned down roles early on — for personal reasons — and was met with pushback. He goes on to reveal that an executive once told him, “You’re the kind of actor who says no. It’s going to ruin your career… You won’t get far in your career by saying no.”

“She’s right. If you just say no, you won’t get anywhere. But if you say no, you are saying yes to your availability to other things. You can’t do everything, but you can follow your gut and your heart.”

It’s a valuable lesson he’s carried with him ever since. And clearly, he’s doing something right, because his career, despite the exec’s vaguely threatening piece of advice, eventually took him all the way to Favignana in southern Italy, where he stepped into Nolan’s The Odyssey to “be a part of the dream.”

Why Logan Marshall-Green Said No to Christopher Nolan

“Two months later, I definitely was kicking myself…”

Marshall-Green has nothing but admiration and kind words for Nolan, who he agrees is one of Hollywood’s leading filmmakers still championing the spectacle and craft of moviemaking. In fact, he tells Nemiroff, “You could have told me I was going to hold a spear in the back, and I would have been fine with it because I wanted to bear witness to the process.” But after his initial audition, which he explains was a self-tape over Christmas time in 2024, Marshall-Green had to refuse Nolan’s callback for an in-person audition with a heavy heart.

“I got a call saying that he wants you to come in for a callback, but L.A. was on fire, and I had some reps who were dealing with it directly, and I couldn’t bring myself to do it. I couldn’t bring myself to fly in. I mean, it was a dream come true callback, but I couldn’t… I couldn’t do it, and I said no to the callback and decided that just wasn’t for me — whatever that role was. I didn’t even know what it was. And two months later, I definitely was kicking myself and just having second thoughts about it for a few months.”

In January of 2025, devastating wildfires raged across Southern California, destroying homes and livelihoods. The fires were so destructive that the magnitude of their effects wouldn’t be fully realized until much later. For Marshall-Green, it was a difficult decision, but a clear one, whereas in L.A., business had to carry on as best it could. The actor even points out that the situation was eerily indicative of Hollywood’s grim situation post-COVID, post-AI, post-streaming, saying:

“Don’t get me wrong, Chris is probably the only person who can still have auditions while L.A. burns. It’s somewhat symbolic in many ways, because while the rest of the business is going that way, Chris is still at the forefront of filmmaking.”

How Logan Marshall-Green Received an Unexpected Second Chance

Turns out, following your gut pays off.

Marshall-Green admits it was a choice that haunted him for months, but eventually, he made peace with it. Then, a change of plans rewarded him with a twist of fate poetic enough for a Greek epic.

“I remember I was walking with my partner in Charleston, and I remember thinking, ‘I’m really happy.’ I remember stopping her. We were in downtown Charleston, and I just stopped her and said, ‘I’m really, really happy.’ And that’s it.

Then we got back, and that night, my team called and said, ‘Do you want to go to Italy in 48 hours to join The Odyssey?’ They let me know somebody had fallen out, and that Chris and Emma [Thomas] were hoping I would take up this role. And like I said, I was available. I’d been saying no to some stuff, thank God, and I said, ‘Yeah, I’ll be there.’ That was the audition process.”

The DC Universe continues to grow, and one familiar hero is officially joining the next chapter.

According to Variety, Xolo Maridueña is set to reprise his role as Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman: Man of Tomorrow, marking the character’s first appearance alongside David Corenswet’s Superman in the rebooted DC Universe.

Maridueña first debuted as Blue Beetle in the 2023 standalone film, and despite the DC Universe reboot, James Gunn previously confirmed that the character would remain part of the new continuity. His return in Man of Tomorrow officially delivers on that promise and gives fans another familiar face as the franchise continues to expand.

During an interview with Variety, DC Studios co-head Peter Safran praised Maridueña’s performance in the original Blue Beetle, explaining why the actor was always part of the studio’s long-term plans.

“What I was most impressed by is his ability with both the comedic and the emotional material. He has all the skills,“ Safran told Variety.

Safran went on to explain that Jaime Reyes is a unique superhero because the role requires balancing humor with genuine emotional weight as the character struggles to protect his family while adapting to his newfound powers.

“It’s just very evident that this is a star-making performance,”

Safran added.

While specific story details remain under wraps, Superman: Man of Tomorrow is expected to see Superman reluctantly team up with his longtime enemy Lex Luthor, played once again by Nicholas Hoult, to confront the looming threat of Brainiac. The sequel is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 9, 2027, and filming has been underway since earlier this year.

Blue Beetle’s inclusion further reinforces DC Studios’ interconnected approach under James Gunn and Peter Safran. Rather than treating each hero as isolated, the new DC Universe is steadily bringing its growing roster together, with characters crossing between films and television as the shared universe continues to take shape.

For fans of Blue Beetle, the news confirms that Jaime Reyes’ journey is far from over. After years of uncertainty surrounding the future of the character following the 2023 film, Maridueña is officially back in action and ready to fight alongside Superman in one of DC’s biggest upcoming releases.

If you thought that Nicolas Cage was the only A-list actor who spent a considerable amount of time occupying direct-to-video territory in the 2010s, you’re gravely mistaken. John Cusack’s career followed a similar trajectory during this time, and the Say Anything actor found himself starring in a dozen films that would not be released theatrically, but rather get picked up as an afterthought at the Redbox outside of your local grocery store. 2014’s The Bag Man resides among these titles, and although Cusack is supported by Robert De Niro and Rebecca Da Costa, it’s one of those strange neo-noir crime thrillers that you probably missed out on.

The Bag

The Bag Man was originally released as The Carrier, and as the updated titles suggests, there is a mysterious black bag involved and we’re not sure what it contains. John Cusack portrays a killer-for-hire named Jack, who is tasked with securing and containing the bag until his employer, Dragna (Robert De Niro), can meet him at a seedy motel and retrieve it. Dragna makes it very clear that Jack is not to look inside the bag under any circumstances or he will be killed. 

Jack checks into room 13, as instructed by Dragna, and awaits further instructions, but he’s not alone. He encounters an escort named Rivka (Rebecca Da Costa), and she immediately starts asking questions about the bag that he has hidden underneath his motel bed. Having already been ambushed by a number of Dragna’s men, one of which is now dead and sloppily stuffed into the back of Jack’s car, Jack remains tight-lipped and armed, as he has good reason to not trust anybody he encounters during his mission. 

Taking place primarily inside of room 13, The Bag Man is a claustrophobic film that explores themes of paranoia and moral ambiguity in the kind of setting that will make your skin crawl. The motel lighting flashes in red and blue, which bears a striking resemblance to an approaching cop car (of which there are plenty), which only adds a sense of confusion to the narrative. When Jack does leave the room, he encounters the nosy wheelchair-bound motel owner, Ned (Crispin Glover), and two thugs named Lizard and Guano, who are all suspicious of his activities. 

A Thriller That Deserves A Second Chance

At face-value, The Bag Man has all the mechanics of a solid neo-noir film, but its third-act reveal leaves a lot to be desired. But within the oppressively small world this film takes place, there’s a solid story that is absolutely worthy of your time if you enjoy the kind of low-budget crime film that doesn’t get a wide theatrical release. 

Unfortunately, The Bag Man was not exactly what we would call a warmly received title despite the talent involved with the production. Critics and audiences alike were quick to brush this crime thriller under the rug, and their respective 11 percent and 23 percent critical and audience approval ratings on Rotten Tomatoes drive this point home. 

Not unlike season 2 of True Detective, The Bag Man isn’t as terrible as the reviews make it out to be, and you can place partial blame on expectations versus execution. John Cusack spent decades portraying extremely likable characters in various romantic comedies, and Robert De Niro’s range runs the gamut from serious mobsters in films like Goodfellas to the quirky but nightmarish father in-law in the Meet the Parents franchise. If you go into watching The Bag Man expecting performances that are reflective of Cusack’s and De Niro’s past work, you’re probably going to be disappointed. 

But still, The Bag Man is an interesting, dark and gritty exploration of a job gone wrong under questionable circumstances.
