Wrexham’s hopes of signing Leeds United striker Joe Gelhardt have been dashed as the forward undergoes a medical at Hull City.

The 22-year-old is set to join the Championship side on loan, dealing a blow to Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s transfer plans.

TalkSPORT’s Alex Crook reports that Hull City have beaten the Welsh club to secure Gelhardt’s services.

The setback comes as Wrexham actively seek to strengthen their attacking options during the January transfer window.

Wrexham currently sit third in League One, just two points behind leaders Birmingham City.

The club’s promotion push has been hampered by a lack of consistent goalscoring, with midfielder Elliott Lee leading the charts with six goals.

Phil Parkinson’s side are reportedly willing to invest in new signings this month as they aim to secure promotion to the Championship.

The Welsh club will need to explore alternative striking options as they look to bolster their attacking ranks before the transfer window closes.

However, this campaign has seen a significant decline, with Mullin managing just two goals and Palmer contributing three.

Wrexham will look to address their goalscoring concerns before the end of the January window.

In the meantime, Parkinson’s side turn their attention to Thursday’s fixture against Shrewsbury Town.
