Police in the German capital say they are searching for suspects following the ‘mass casualty incident’

An LGBTQ+ pride parade in Berlin has been cancelled after several people were injured when it is believed a vehicle ploughed into a crowd.

The city’s pride parade, known in Germany as Christopher Street Day, was halted just hours after it had begun.

German police called on everyone in a post on X to leave the premises of the event immediately.

A post on X by Berlin Police said: “We are currently deployed with numerous police forces as well as rescue units from the Berlin Fire Department in the Großer Tiergarten.

“It is presumed that a vehicle has driven into the Tiergarten here, has struck and injured several people. The injured are currently being treated by rescue personnel. We are conducting an intensive manhunt for suspects.”

German news outlet Bild reports that a mass casualty incident had been declared after a van drove into crowds ‘at high speed.’

The paper cited eyewitness reports of a man getting out of the vehicle and fleeing on foot.

Hundreds of thousands of people had come to the German capital for the event, which is one of Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ celebrations.

Those earning more than £50,000 from self-employment or property must submit their first quarterly update by August 7, 2026.

The update covers income and expenses for the first three months of the tax year and must be submitted through HMRC-recognised software.

This is not a tax return

HMRC has stressed that the quarterly update is not a Self Assessment tax return.

Instead, it is a short digital summary of income and expenses that takes just a few minutes to complete using compatible software.

People who have not yet signed up can still register before the deadline, while those who use an accountant can ask their agent to enrol them.

Some software also includes HMRC Assist, a digital tool that flags potential errors before submission and gives users an estimate of how much tax they are likely to owe, helping them budget ahead.

HMRC: ‘This is a landmark moment’

Craig Ogilvie, HMRC’s Director of Making Tax Digital, said: “This is a landmark moment for the tax system. Hundreds of thousands of sole traders and landlords are now keeping digital records and will be sending their first quarterly update in the coming weeks.

“For those already using software, this should be straightforward and take minutes. If you haven’t signed up yet, there is still time – visit GOV.UK and search ‘Making Tax Digital for Income Tax’ to get started.”

Among those who have already completed their first submission is Natasha Patterson, a 33-year-old potter from Whitehead, County Antrim, who runs Natasha Swan Ceramics.

She admitted she had expected the new process to be complicated and submitted her update early in case she ran into problems.

Instead, she said the process took around 10 minutes.

“I was expecting there to be some hurdles and I wanted to give myself time to work through any issues but was pleasantly surprised to find the process very smooth and straightforward,” she said.

“I went back to check I did it right about three times, but it really was very straightforward.

“Everything made sense and was logical – it wasn’t overwhelming, even though it was all new to me.

“If they can all go this seamlessly, we will be set up for smooth sailing at the end of this tax year.”

Natasha said one of the biggest benefits was being able to see an estimate of her tax bill immediately after submitting.

“It’s great to have a forecast of what I owe already, without mounds of paperwork. I feel more prepared knowing what’s expected of me in the coming months.”

She encouraged other sole traders not to worry about the new process, adding: “If you can complete your Self Assessment tax return, this is much easier. As far as tax submissions go, it was probably as pleasant as they come.”

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax became mandatory from April 2026 for sole traders and landlords with qualifying income above £50,000.

The scheme will be extended to those earning more than £30,000 from April 2027, before expanding again to people earning more than £20,000 from April 2028.

HMRC has also reminded taxpayers that the new quarterly updates do not replace the annual Self Assessment tax return. Anyone affected must still submit their tax return and pay any tax due by January 31, 2027.

Although HMRC has confirmed no penalty points will be issued for late quarterly updates during the first year of the scheme, the normal penalties for late tax returns and late payments still apply.

From the second year onwards, a points-based penalty system will be introduced for missed quarterly deadlines.

A search is under way to find a group of migrants after a man in his 20s was stabbed to death on a French beach. 

French police launched an investigation after a body was found on Terminus Beach, in the popular seaside resort of Berck-sur-Mer on Thursday.

Witnesses reported the victim had been attacked by other migrants on the sand dunes at dawn. 

It is feared that the suspected murderers fled across the Channel to the UK by small boat soon after. 

That same day, at 6am, a small boat set sail from the same beach carrying 165 migrants. The vessel was later escorted into Dover for its occupants to be processed. 

The National Crime Agency is liaising with French police following the incident. 

A spokesperson for the NCA told the Daily Mail: ‘We are aware of an incident on Thursday, July 23 in which an individual died in French waters.

‘French partners are leading the investigation into the circumstances’.

The Home Office declined to comment on the incident. 

French authorities are trying to identify the victim, who had no documents on him. 

A French investigative source told the Sun: ‘There was a fierce argument, and fighting. A young man was stabbed by at least one attacker. 

‘A knife was close to his dead body in the afternoon, many hours later. 

‘By this time it is believed those responsible got on a boat and escaped to England.’ 

The incident happened along a 7.5-mile stretch of sand in the commune of Berck-sur-Mer, which sits within Calais. 

Police were reportedly already in the area attempting to prevent migrants from crossing the Channel.  

More than 500 migrants crossed the channel on Wednesday and Thursday alone during Andy Burnham’s first week as prime minister. 

On Wednesday, 172 migrants entered the UK on three boats, while on Thursday 366 crossed the Channel – with a record 165 people on board just one boat. 

More than 77,000 migrants have arrived in the UK after crossing the Channel since Labour’s election victory in July 2024. 

Since records began in 2018, more than 200,000 have arrived. 

While the number of arrivals so far this year – more than 13,000 – is over 40 per cent down on last year’s figures, experts believe crossings could go up again.

Wednesday’s crossings were the first recorded since July 10, which experts said was partly because of windy weather and choppier waters. 

On Saturday, a teenager was charged with piloting a small boat crossing from France to the UK. 

Sudanese national Chan Mathok Atak, 19, was accused of endangering another during a journey by sea to the UK on Thursday. 

Atak, from South Sudan, has been remanded in custody and will appear at Margate Magistrates’ Court on Monday, the National Crime Agency said. 

Mr Burnham has so far stayed quiet on border policy, despite it topping a string of recent voter polls. 

Shadow home secretary Chris Philp said: ‘More illegal immigrants crossed the Channel under Keir Starmer than under any other Prime Minister.

‘And now we’ve had a terrible start with Burnham’s boats and the largest ever migrant dingy crossing yesterday with 165 illegal immigrants on it.

‘Illegal immigrant crossings continue to define Labour – because they refuse to take the action needed to stop it.

‘Only the Conservative Party has a plan to end Channel crossings by leaving the European Convention of Human Rights and deporting all illegal immigrants within a week of arrival.’

A Home Office spokesman said yesterday: ‘Removals of small-boat migrants are at record levels and asylum claims down by 12 per cent.’

One person has lost their life and 14 others have been left injured after a vehicle ploughed into a crowd near an LGBTQ event.

Emergency services descended on Tiergarten park in Berlin after the vehicle struck a number of people at one of Europe’s biggest Pride celebrations.

The event was abandoned in the German capital on Saturday, just hours after it had got underway, as police launched an urgent hunt for the suspect or suspects involved.

Officers, who declined to confirm the exact number of casualties, urged everyone in a post on X to vacate the area immediately.

Shortly afterwards, police confirmed that a car had driven into Tiergarten park, close to the route of the pride march, striking several people, reports the Daily Star.

Police were unable to confirm the exact number of officers deployed to the scene, but stated it was “definitely a lot of police”.

The post from Berlin Police reads: “We are currently deployed with numerous police forces as well as rescue units from the Berlin Fire Department in the Großer Tiergarten.

Locals say they have changed their habits and routines to cope with the hot, dry summer

Residents of Britain’s driest village say they are having to adopt a ‘Mediterranean-lifestyle’ to cope with the summer’s heatwave. Histon, north of Cambridge, has seen just 196.4.mm of rain fall since January 1 making it the driest place in the UK according to the Met Office.

The reading, taken on July 19, is less than half the amount that fell in the same period two years ago. Not a single drop of rain has been recorded in the village – population 4,580 -since June 26, with just 0.4mm recorded at a local monitoring station.

Out walking her dog, local resident Jo Catterick, 62, said life has ‘slowed down’. The culture in the village has turned more Mediterranean as a result of the hot and dry weather – with locals staying inside during the day and choosing only to go out in the evening. Gardeners in the area are also filling their gardens with more Mediterranean plants as the weather gets hotter.

Jo said: “I’m living like a middle aged Greek woman – where you see them close the shutters at 11 o’clock and get all their jobs done first thing in the morning. They live their lives more in the evening, which I think people are doing much more now, it’s much less busy in the day.”

Lifelong resident Julie Dunn, 62, says the duck pond on the village green is at the ‘lowest level’ she has ever seen – while she’s using bath water to keep her plants alive. A hosepipe ban has been in force in the village since July 9, along with the rest of the Cambridge Water region.

Julie said: “It’s a very beautiful area, and it’s very pretty, but it doesn’t look at it’s best – it’s just brown and burnt. The dry weather means I’m having to water and be very careful – we have a bucket in the shower, and we save all our grey water, and we use that for the garden.

“We always put a bucket in when we have a shower to get the excess – washing up water, we always put in the water butt to try and avoid filling our watering cans from the hose. I think we’re all going to have to look at different plants and things for our gardens – it’s going to change how peoples’ gardens look, they’re not going to cope with the degrees of heat that we’re getting and the lack of water.”

Landlord of the Rose and Crown pub Steven Snudden, 39, says the dry weather has helped him sell more beer – but left his garden in tatters. He said: “People are just as thirsty for beer, so that helps me, I guess. Customer-wise, we’ve been just as busy, if not busier recently.

“My garden was growing lovely, but it got trashed in a few days because of people walking on it. Not being able to water the lawns has had quite an impact for the pub. It’s brown with patches of mud.”

Four miles away, the Cambridge University Botanic Garden is feeling the impact of the area’s low water levels. Their own rainfall reading, 209.5 mm, would put them at the second-lowest level nationwide if included amongst the Met Office’s data.

The facility’s head of horticulture Sally Petitt, 57, said the facility was looking to grow plants more adapted for warmer climates. She said: “We’re actually focussing some of our expeditions and plant-collecting trips on countries that have climates similar to that which we’re forecast to have in the future.

“We’ve always traditionally grown Mediterranean plants well because of our low rainfall and our local conditions, and well-drained soils, so it’s expanding those kind of collections, and thinking of those as being the norm, rather than the exception.”

She added: “We’re thinking about installing more rainwater harvesting, we have some on our glasshouses, but not anywhere near sufficient probably for future use. We’re trying to adapt, but it’s quite hard to know exactly what the climate will do.

“If you say ‘let’s focus on Mediterranean plants and we get very wet winters as they’re predicting, they may not thrive in those wet winters, although they’ll be very happy in hot, dry summers. It’s quite a challenge to know where to play it, but we are definitely thinking about what we grow in the future.”

Back in Histon, the National Institute of Agricultural Botany, which measured the village’s low rainfall, said the dry weather was providing a real-life test for its research. NIAB head of communications Ros Lloyd said: “Across UK agriculture, prolonged dry conditions can reduce crop yields, place pressure on water resources, affect livestock feed availability and increase the financial uncertainty faced by farmers.

“As weather patterns become more unpredictable, understanding how to maintain productive and profitable farming systems under these conditions is becoming increasingly important. At Niab, drought tolerance and the impact of climate change on crop production are key areas of our work.”

Ms Lloyd continued: “The extreme conditions experienced this season offer a real-world backdrop in which to study how different crop varieties respond to water stress, identify traits associated with resilience, and develop strategies that can help farmers adapt to a changing climate.

“As periods of drought are expected to become more frequent and more intense in many parts of the UK, research of this kind is increasingly important. By understanding how crops perform under these challenging conditions, we can help support the development of more resilient farming systems and safeguard future food production.”

Florian Nath, spokesman for Police Berlin, said “numerous” people were injured, including several with life-threatening injuries.

Some are being resuscitated at the scene, according to Nath.

Regarding how the people were injured, he said a white car was driven into the Tiergarten and hit several people along the Ahornsteig, a road through the large park.

Police are searching for one or several suspects, Nath added.

Freddy Brazier has shared his devastation that his dog will be taken away after leaving a hole in his arm as he declared ‘he’s like my son’.

The son of the late Jade Goody and Jeff Brazier, 21, received emergency hospital treatment after his dog Pablo ‘hooked onto his arm’ during an attack.

But now Freddy fears the animal – a pocket bully breed – could be destroyed after it was seized and taken away by police.

Freddy told The Sun that he was mauled by the dog when he went to collect him from his grandmother Jackie Budden’s home.

Sharing details of the attack, he said: ‘I couldn’t feel anything in my right arm. But then I saw blood coming out of my tracksuit. I opened it to see a 3cm hole in my arm. It was terrifying.’

However, despite the ordeal, Freddy said he doesn’t want to lose Pablo. 

He said: ‘I want my dog back, but my nan has told me that he can’t go back to her house, and my dad won’t have him at his house. 

‘I have never seen him as my dog — he’s like my son. He’s in police kennels and I’m probably not going to see my dog again.’

Jackie was also attacked by Pablo and her neighbours called the police days before he was mauled by the animal.

He spent eight hours in hospital getting stitches on Monday after his dog savagely bit him at his nan’s London home.

‘Jackiey was injured while attempting to pull Pablo off of him. Freddy was shocked when it happened and was left in a lot of pain,’ reported The Sun.

It was later revealed that it is not the first time the bulldog has attacked with emergency services attending the scene to help last week. 

Police and the fire brigade were called on July 16 by a concerned neighbour who heard screams of agony as the dog gripped onto Jackiey, which left her needing medical treatment. 

Four days later Pablo attacked again leaving both Freddy and Jackiey injured and requiring hospital treatment. 

Jackie was also attacked by Pablo and her neighbours called the police days before he was mauled by the animal. 

A source told The Sun: ‘It’s been a shocking few days. During the first incident Jackiey was home alone and she was mauled – on this occasion one of her panicked neighbours raised the alarm.

‘Both the police and the fire brigade attended, but fortunately it wasn’t too serious – and they agreed not to pursue criminal charges.

‘But a few days later the incident was repeated, and this time it was worse. Freddy came back to take Pablo but caught up in it all as the dog was clearly still frenzied.

‘Freddy went to A&E immediately, but discharged himself after complaining that the waiting time was too long.  But yesterday he was forced to return and his injuries couldn’t be ignored. He was still in hospital at night receiving significant treatment. 

‘It’s been an awful few days and Freddy is devastated as he absolutely adores that dog and Pablo is a huge part of the family.’

It comes after Freddy dumped his ex-girlfriend Holly Swinburn, 22, following a huge row about the dog in July last year.

The Daily Mail reported Freddy broke off the relationship when Holly, who is the mother of his daughter, tried to take his dog from him in a furious argument.

The couple welcomed their first child together in March, naming her Isla Jade Brazier in honour of his late mother Jade Goody.

Last year, Freddy admitted he doesn’t like people because he finds them ‘draining’ as he helped out at dog daycare centre London Dog Club.

He looked in his element as he shared snaps of himself surrounded by pups, doing dog agility and playing in the field.

But his caption raised eyebrows as he wrote: ‘Do you prefer dogs or people? I personally at this moment in time prefer dogs.’

His brother, EastEnders star Bobby, shared laughing faces under the post, to which Freddy replied: ‘People are draining, dogs are healing!’

The incident comes after Freddy moved out of the home he shared with girlfriend Holly and their newborn daughter in April 2026 following a row over his grandmother, Jackiey.

It was claimed that tensions escalated between the couple after Holly allegedly refused to allow Jackiey to meet their daughter.

According to reports, Freddy left the family home and is now staying with his grandmother.

He was spotted days later carrying bags into Jackiey’s south-east London property, in images obtained by The Sun.

Holly is said to have concerns about Jackiey’s lifestyle, reportedly believing she has been a negative influence on Freddy.

A source told the publication: ‘He has packed his bags and disappeared without telling Holly where he is.

‘Holly loves Isla Jade and is taking motherhood really seriously, but Freddy is not the same — despite all the ‘happy family’ pictures they posted together on social media.’

The Daily Mail has contacted Freddy’s representatives for comment, but they have refused to comment.

In June last year, Freddy and Jackiey were spotted smoking suspicious cigarettes after their recent reconciliation, despite his dad Jeff’s war to block contact.

Freddy was seen puffing with his gran in front of tourists near Tower Bridge in South London.

He cut a casual figure in a burgundy top and beige shorts while Jackiey wore her own joggers rolled up to her knees and sported bandages on her hands, with onlookers telling The Sun that she was ‘acting erratically’.

They told the publication: ‘The pair were puffing away in the open, in full view of tourists passing by and there was an aromatic smell in the air. It didn’t seem to be normal tobacco they were smoking’.

Meanwhile Jackiey said: ‘As long as Freddy smokes with me he’s safe. At least I know what he’s smoking as it’s nasty out there.’

Freddy previously claimed that he had come to the realisation his grandmother had been lying to him in an explosive TikTok video.

However, in December he appeared to have patched things up with her just in time for Christmas.

In November, Freddy told his followers that he ‘tried to end it all’ by crashing his car before his 18th birthday during a manic episode.

During the tell-all TikTok video he also shared a photo of his grandmother Jackiey and penned: ‘Prioritised my relationship with my mum’s mum not knowing she has been lying to me for years!’

It’s no secret that the duo have had a tumultuous relationship in recent times.

Last year, Freddy’s father, Jeff tried to instil a court order to prevent Jackiey from having contact with his son, as he feared she was a negative influence on him.

Since her death, Jeff has looked after Freddy and his older brother Bobby.

Jackiey helped raise Bobby and Freddy following Jade’s death but she and Jeff have clashed multiple times over the years.
