New List Of The UK's Favourite Christmas Films Includes A Very Controversial Pick

The debate over which classic Christmas film truly reigns supreme apparently has an answer.

New data suggests that the UK’s favourite seasonal film to stream at this time of year is Home Alone, which happens to be celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2025.

According to a new poll by YouGov, around one in five Britons chose Home Alone as their festive fave, with 19% naming it as their top pick.

In second position was Die Hard, which every year sparks the same old debate about whether we should even consider it a Christmas film just because the action unfolds around the festive season.

Whatever side of the argument you fall on, 11% of YouGov’s film fans had it at the top of their Christmas wishlists, with the bronze medal going to the Will Ferrell comedy Elf, which received 9% of the vote.

What did Britons say was the best Christmas film ever?

The full top 10 is as follows:

  1. Home Alone (19%)
  2. Die Hard (11%)
  3. Elf (9%)
  4. Love Actually (7%)
  5. It’s A Wonderful Life (6%)
  6. A Christmas Carol (various adaptations) (5%)
  7. The Muppet Christmas Carol (5%)
  8. The Holiday (5%)
  9. The Grinch (4%)
  10. Miracle On 34th Street (4%)

Other films to be mentioned by those surveyed without making the shortlist included Santa Claus: The Movie and The Polar Express (on 3% each).

Meanwhile, Nativity, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, The Snowman and White Christmas were all mentioned by 2% of the poll.

Home Alone proved to be a breakout project for former child star Macaulay Culkin, who went on to reprise the role of Kevin McAllister in the sequel Lost In New York (which features an infamous cameo we now have to watch through our fingers).

Over the years, Home Alone has been rebooted numerous times, with Maculay’s recent suggestion for a new way he could return to the franchise getting the thumbs up from many fans.
