Blade centers are an interesting set of devices.
Consolidating redundant power delivery, cooling and management is a nice feature of them.
The additional feature of being able to pull out a whole server without needing to even care about cable management is also a nice.

Though, IBM's choice to go with such slim blades is a bit odd, since half height RAM tends to be more expensive than normal height RAM. (due to the lower manufacturing volume.)

I think HP has a bit more practical blade form factor. Since it can use normal RAM, and there is even a GPU expansion blade. (It can take 2 slot GPUs just fine. Though, preferably one's without any fans, since it will suck air through the card. Since the PCIe bracket faces the front of the server.) And there is even some HDD drawer expansion if I recall correctly…

Though, HP also made some odd decision, since the blade center itself has an expansion slot for integrated networking on the blade itself, but not all blades comes with integrated networking… (Ie, one needs to buy a more expansive network card for their proprietary mezzanine slot and a second network switch for the blade center itself…. And some blades one might want to put a GPU into, but then one can't have a second mezzanine card installed, so then one better hope it has integrated networking on the blade itself. One can push files via the management interface but that is a drag to say the least…. They might have fixed this on newer generations, hopefully.)

I wonder what "problems" Dell's blade centers have.

I've always wondered why you didn't use the bladecenter more since it seems like a pretty cool system to experiment with. It would have been cool if you'd shown off the Power CPU based blade as well, since that's a pretty unique type of system you don't see very often.

Hi Morten, will it be possible for you to record the video in another room when you explain/show stuff (like the back modules or the inside of the blades) and when you use the menagmente? It's very noisy in here and i think it will be a good thing to record in a less noisy enviroment when possible. Obviously i speak only for things that small and light/easy to trasport

If You don't hear the noise – You have too many servers.

  12. @Astra7525

    October 18, 2024 at 1:51 am

    Hi Morten.
We have an IBM FlexSystem PureFlex Bladecenter with several IBM/Lenovo FlexSystem x240 Compute Nodes in our production datacenter at my workplace.
We are in the very slow process of replacing it with regular POTS servers.

I am not making any promises, but IF we are going to scrap metal it and not use it for something else, MAYBE I can arrange to give or sell it to you.
It is not my decision to make though, I can only keep tabs.
We are somewhat close to the Danish land border so pickup might also be an option instead of shipping.

I know what you mean about the UI crashing I have that problem with some other IBM systems I have. EG TS3584 management interface DS6000 Storage Manager and IBM HMC have all crashed on me one time or another. Also Power7 blade looks interesting could you perhaps do a video on that? And yes the ASMI on those also sometimes is a little broken but I’ve had the best success with that.

Would love to get my hands on a blade setup. Somewhat hard to find in Australia where people arnt selling the chassis for over 1000 buks. A few of my friends run game servers and would be perfect for it. And I just wanna mess about with one as I love server gear like this.

I don't have any server hardware but I could imagine these blade servers are power hungry ( and noisy). I have half a dozen PCs doing FAH, and that'll help with heating since it is -15. In summer however, I think I will turn some of them off as I don't need the heat then.

I used to manage an entire rack full of the original IBM blade centers back in the early 2000s. A fun fact I found out from an IBM salesman at the time was that the Lord of the Rings movies were rendered on hundreds of blade centers by Weta Digital in New Zealand. Those blade centers used a ton of power and the heat they generate at the back of the rack is insane. I managed a cluster of Linux servers. There is an excellent software suite made by IBM to manage the cluster called XCAT. It's a fabulous management tool that works brilliantly with the blade centres

my problem with my servers are RAM, im running Mail Servers for a few domains and the SPAM filtering software im using with Postfix uses a lot of RAM. i need RAM more than CPUs but finding motherboards that supports a lot more RAM on a single CPU board is the issue.

I have 5 HS22 blades with dual Xeon X5675 on a BladeCenter S with 10Gb switches and 12 HDDs. I'm running ESXi 6.7u4 without any problem, but unfortunately it's impossible to upgrade to ESXi 7.0, the Megaraid is not recognized. Do you think it will ever be possible to install ESXi 7.0 on these old machines?

I take the same type of this server ( save From recycling and cutting factory of course without the HDD ), and six new version of blades are filled with 96 GB DDR3 ECC-REG RAM.
Of course I took it the power units and I/O units also, with special power cables, and the optical network cards.

    I have a question.

This type of server can I use for a CPU based cryptocurrency mining or not?!

I Made The World's Smallest Server Rack - With UPS and SSD Storage

Having your own home server rack or homelab is really useful, but you have to have a relatively large space to set it up, it generates a lot of heat and can be pretty noisy. So that’s why I built this, the world’s smallest server rack that fits right in on my desk alongside a drink or cup of coffee. In this video, I’ll show you how I made it.
