WWE Fans Boo Triple H as John Cena Taps Out in Final Match
The iconic career of John Cena is officially over, but WWE fans in attendance at the landmark bout were fuming with Paul ‘Triple H‘ Levesque afterwards.
In what was the final stop on his 36-date ‘farewell tour’, the 17-time world champion took on Gunther in his last match as an in-ring competitor at Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington DC.
‘The Ring General’ won the 16-man ‘Last Time Is Now Tournament’ to earn the right to face Cena in his final appearance inside the squared circle. He would also become the last match to defeat the legendary Superstar.
John Cena Taps Out to Gunther in Final WWE Match
An emotionally-charged sold-out crowd of more than 19,000 fans packed into the Capital One Arena, but they were left raging after their man tapped out in his WWE swansong.
Fans had their moments to cheer Cena during the contest. The 48-year-old hit a number of Five Knuckle Shuffles and Attitude Adjustments on the Austrian, including one from the top rope and one through a table, but it was all to no avail.
Gunther consistently went back to his patented sleeper submission and, despite the crowd loudly chanting: ‘Don’t give up’, Cena had a resigned smile on his face as he tapped out to bring the curtain down on his time as an active WWE competitor.
WWE Fans Savage Triple H After John Cena Taps Out to Gunther
In the aftermath of the defeat, the locker room emptied to pay tribute to the departing Cena. However, it wasn’t long until boos could be heard cascading from all four sides of the arena. The mere sight of Triple H caused the crowd to erupt in anger, and the boos only intensified when the WWE Chief Content Officer made his way on to the apron to shake John’s hand.
Cena would go on to leave his trademark wristbands and sneakers in the centre of the ring as he said a final farewell to the fans. However, the anger over the finish of the main event lasted well into the post-show panel, where fans continued to voice their opinion.
While on commentary, Michael Cole pointed out that Cena hadn’t tapped out in more than 20 years. For John to go out in his shield may have been a poetic ending, but it wasn’t one that has gone down well with fans.
