Rory Gallagher: Former Derry GAA manager intends to return

Former Derry GAA manager Rory Gallagher has said he “fully intends” to return to inter-county management in a statement issued by his solicitors.

Gallagher was “temporarily debarred” from the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) in September 2023 after Ulster GAA asked an independent panel to investigate claims of abuse made by Gallagher’s estranged wife Nicola Gallagher.

Gallagher, who stepped back as Derry boss in May 2023, challenged his ban and the Disputes Resolution Authority (DRA), an independent arbitration body, found in Gallagher’s favour following a hearing on 1 February.

“There is no legal impediment to our client undertaking or accepting a role as a GAA Senior Football manager,” a statement from Gallagher’s solicitors Phoenix Law read.

“Our client fully intends to return to inter county management in the near future.

“Two separate investigations have led – rightly – to decisions by the PPS not to prosecute. Mr Gallagher has not been charged with a single offence,” the statement continued.

Alexander Isak: Newcastle striker an injury doubt for Premier League match against Fulham

Newcastle United could be without striker Alexander Isak for Saturday’s Premier League match at Fulham.

The 24-year-old Sweden international sustained eye and foot injuries in Newcastle’s 2-1 win over Wolves last weekend.

Fellow striker Callum Wilson is expected to be out until the next international break, in October.

Anthony Gordon could deputise for Isak in a central role if required, while summer signing William Osula is yet to make his debut.

Asked about Isak’s condition on Friday, manager Eddie Howe said: “Good question. I’ll find out more today.

“It was a strange one with his eye. The ball just grazed his eye and we felt at that time that was the main reason for him coming off the pitch.

“Then he had a knock to his foot as well, so he’s got a combination of the two.

“We’ll make a decision today.”

Singapore Grand Prix 2024: Charles Leclerc fastest in first practice ahead of Lando Norris

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc set the pace ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris in first practice at the Singapore Grand Prix.

Leclerc was 0.076 seconds quicker than the Briton, with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz third ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

Norris heads into the weekend 59 points behind Verstappen in the championship and needing to keep eating into the Dutchman’s lead to keep his title hopes on track.

Singapore was the only race last year where Red Bull failed to win, and the team have come into the event this year expecting a difficult weekend.

Verstappen complained of understeer during the session and ended it 0.334secs off the pace.

There were no crashes during the session on the demanding Marina Bay street circuit but Norris and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso both rescued major moments on the exit of Turn Eight.

Both drivers slid on to the exit kerb and fought to keep control, Alonso’s incident so large that he accidentally pressed the button saying he would pit while correcting it.

RBs Yuki Tsunoda was fifth fastest, ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri.

The Australian, the winner of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix last weekend, had a delayed start to the session when his car suffered a failure on its left-rear corner during pit-stop practice.

It was repaired in time for Piastri to join the track after about 15 minutes.

He had a brush with the wall during the session without major damage to the car and ended it 0.606secs off Leclerc’s pace.

RB’s Daniel Ricciardo, whose future in the team is in doubt, was seventh fastest, from the Williams of Alex Albon, Alonso and Alpine’s Esteban Ocon.

The second session starts at 21:00 local time (14:00 BST).

Surrey win third straight County Championship title after Somerset lose

Solheim Cup 2024: US beat Europe in Virginia for first win since 2017

As you might expect from a squad packed with internationals, Surrey were without the services of numerous players at one point or another throughout the season.

They have used 23 players in this campaign, with only captain Rory Burns, fellow opener Dom Sibley and all-rounder Jordan Clark playing all 13 matches.

Burns has led the way with the bat, scoring three centuries and 1,057 runs – helped largely by his career-best 227 in a thumping win against Lancashire at The Oval in August.

Wicketkeeper Jamie Smith catapulted his way into England’s Test side with some dazzling batting displays to average north of 56 in his nine matches, while Dan Lawrence has averaged just under 50 following his high-profile switch from Essex.

More than a dozen bowlers picked up wickets across the season – paceman Dan Worrall leading the way with 52 at an average of 16.15.

Clark showed why he is one of the most valuable assets in county cricket, taking 38 wickets along with scoring 467 runs down the order.

Cameron Steel set an incredible pace back in the spring, leading all bowlers in the first three rounds of the Championship with 20 wickets – though the leg-spinner has only picked up three since.

Next season will see a huge change in south London as director of cricket and Surrey legend Alec Stewart is leaving the role at the end of this campaign.

How big an effect that has on such a talented squad remains to be seen.

Anthony Joshua vs Daniel Dubois: How champion went from shy teenager to heavyweight star

Anthony Joshua vs Daniel Dubois: How champion went from shy teenager to heavyweight star

A naive and bewildered Daniel Dubois turned to his father for support when asked to share his dreams and aspirations.

The teenager was giving his first interview to Queensberry Promotions after joining Frank Warren’s stable.

Dubois’ timid demeanour conflicted with his imposing 6ft 4in muscular figure.

He was the home-schooled introvert who could complete five hours of push-ups a day from the age of five – and there was little time for friendship or socialising.

So when Dubois hurtled into the limelight of pro boxing aged 19, it was very much a case of boy meets world.

Seven years later, though, Dubois has transformed from a sheepish, sometimes voiceless, character to a fighter demanding respect.

“You don’t intimidate me. Who do you think you are?” he barked at Anthony Joshua during a behind-doors face-off.

On Saturday, in front of a post-war British boxing record crowd of 96,000, Dubois continues his boxing journey in a world-title defence against compatriot Joshua at Wembley Stadium.

“I always thought he’d be a future champion, but I’ve really seen him change from that shrinking violet who first stepped into my office,” Warren reflects.

BBC Sport speaks to members of the boxing fraternity with first-hand accounts of Dubois’ ascent from a shy prospect to the peak of the heavyweight division.
