Former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan has described his terrifying experience of being locked in a restaurant in Bondi while an active shooting was ongoing at Bondi Beach.

Michael Vaughan has detailed the terrifying experience he faced in being locked in a restaurant in Bondi while an active shooting was taking place on Bondi Beach. At least 12 people have been pronounced dead after being targeted by two gunmen during a Jewish Hanukkah event on the famous beach in Sydney.

The gunfire was reported at around 6:50pm local time, with one of the gunmen fatally shot, while the other remains in police custody. While the fallout from the incident continues, with the police investigating the area, those nearby have detailed some of the terrifying experiences they encountered.

Among them was former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan. The 51-year-old is currently in Australia for coverage in England’s tour of the country for the Ashes, but after the shooting, he took to social media to describe the terrifying incident he faced in Sydney, as well as detailing that he is safe.

He said on X: “Being locked in a restaurant in Bondi was scary.. Now home safe..

“But thanks so much to the emergency services and the guy who confronted the terrorist .. thoughts with all who have been affected .. xxx”

The shooting has since been designated as a terrorist incident, with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese releasing a statement on the situation. He said: “The evil that was unleashed at Bondi Beach today is beyond comprehension, and the trauma and loss that families are dealing with tonight is beyond anyone’s worst nightmare.

“We have seen Australians today run towards danger in order to help others. These Australians are heroes and their bravery has saved lives. These Australians are heroes and their bravery has saved lives. There is no place for this hate, violence and terrorism in our nation.

“Let me be clear, we will eradicate it. Amidst this vile act of violence and hate will emerge a moment of national unity where Australians across the board will embrace their fellow Australians of Jewish faith at this dark moment for our nation. Our police and security agencies are working to determine anyone associated with this outrage.”

The latest information on the Bondi Beach shooting has revealed that police are still investigating the incident and ensuring the surrounding area is safe. The police have since found and disposed of several improvised explosive devices from a nearby car on the beach.

Meanwhile, praise has come in for one local hero who tackled one of the gunmen on the beach. He was recorded taking a gun off one of the shooters, wrestling it away from him and helping to deal with the situation and bring it to an end.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer took to social media to send his thoughts to those impacted by the shooting. He said on X: “Deeply distressing news from Australia.
