Dana White says Conor McGregor’s next opponent won’t be determined until he’s ready to fight again

Dana White says Conor McGregor’s next opponent won’t be determined until he’s ready to fight again

Conor McGregor won’t get an opponent for his UFC return until he’s actually ready to fight again.

That’s according to UFC CEO Dana White, who addressed a question about either Michael Chandler or Charles Oliveira potentially competing for that fight when they clash at UFC 309 in November. Chandler was originally supposed to welcome McGregor back to the octagon but constant delays and their fight cancellation at UFC 303 in June ultimately led to him booking a rematch against Oliveira instead.

Now White is staying noncommittal when it comes to McGregor’s list of possible opponents.

“It’s going to [be] determined when Conor comes back, who the opponent is,” White said during a Q&A with fans in Ireland on Thursday. “Whenever Conor is ready and he comes back.

“He hit me up last night when he heard that I was here [in Dublin]. He’s in New York right now and he is training.”

In other words, McGregor’s opponent won’t be determined until his return date is actually set.

That’s a far cry from the past 18 months when McGregor got matched up with Chandler after they agreed to coach The Ultimate Fighter against each other before setting up an eventual fight.

Sadly issues continued to arise that prevented McGregor from competing — including six months of drug testing required after he dropped out of the UFC’s anti-doping program while recovering from a broken leg suffered in his fight against Dustin Poirier back in 2021.

McGregor was scheduled to fight Chandler in June but the Irish superstar suffered a broken pinky toe on his foot that forced him to drop off UFC 303.

There were rumors about McGregor potentially returning before the end of the year but White eventually revealed that the former two-division UFC champion wouldn’t come back until sometime in 2025.

That led to Chandler deciding to book his fight against Oliveira in November rather than continuing to sit on the sidelines waiting for a showdown with McGregor that may never happen.

Now it looks like McGregor has to commit to a date before the UFC sets him up with any opponent for his first fight back in nearly four years.

Liverpool injury: Alisson Becker doubtful for Bournemouth

Liverpool manager Arne Slot says goalkeeper Alisson Becker is a doubt to face Bournemouth in Saturday’s Premier League game because of a muscle issue.

Alisson has played in all of the Anfield side’s four league games this season and was in goal for their Champions League win at AC Milan on Tuesday.

He also played for Brazil in the Copa America during the summer as well as the recent international break.

When asked about the expanded fixture schedule before the game in Milan, the 31-year-old said “nobody asks the players” about their workload.

“It is a doubt if Alisson can train on Friday,” said Slot.

“If he can’t, then he probably won’t play. We have to wait and see.”

Alisson played 42 matches for Liverpool and Brazil last season despite being injured for more than two months, when Caoimhin Kelleher deputised for him.

“He [Alisson] has a slight issue with one of his muscles and we wonder if this game is too early or not,” added Slot.

“He didn’t get it in the Milan game, it happened a bit before, but after the Milan game he felt it more and more.

“We have to wait and see if he will be in goal on Saturday or if we have to wait a few extra days.”

Zurich 2024 Cycling World Championships: GB's Fin Graham going for gold

On the bike is where Graham does his talking.

The pride of Strathpeffer – a small village in the Scottish highlands, he is one of Great Britain’s best hopes to win a rainbow jersey in Zurich.

Since 2022 he has claimed four world titles in the velodrome and two on the road.

After two silver medals in Tokyo, he briefly set a world record in the heats of the C3 individual pursuit – only to have his time beaten by team-mate Jaco van Gass mere minutes later.

“Classic Jaco,” joked Graham. “He did the same thing in Tokyo. It was so quick, at least give me a chance to see my record flash up on the screen!”

Van Gass beat Graham in the final, but the Scot finally got his first Paralympic gold on the penultimate day of the Games, outsprinting Frenchman Thomas Peyroton-Dartet in a dramatic finish.

Graham’s form means he is favourite for the road title on Zurich’s hilly course, and he also fancies his chances in Tuesday’s C1-3 time trial.

“Over the past two years I’ve lost out on the TT by a combined time of I think about two seconds, which is ridiculous over the distances we race,” he told BBC Sport.

“Second in Glasgow last year was really hard to take. My results had been so good and no GB rider had won the time trial before. I really wanted to win that.”

County Championship: Matthew Fisher took two of the three wickets to fall on the final day

The first eight overs of day four were wicketless before Fisher ended Tribe’s lengthy vigil after a breakthrough knock, ripping out his off stump, and then having Andy Gorvin lbw fourth ball.

Championship debutant Ben Morris glanced a boundary first ball to register his first senior red-ball runs before James Harris decided to have some fun, blasting 14 runs off a George Hill over before being bowled for 49, heaving at Thompson.

Yorkshire need just a draw and two bonus points from their final Championship match at home to Northants starting on Thursday, 26 September, while Glamorgan have their key 50-overs clash at Trent Bridge on Sunday to try to redeem a disappointing month.
