Coco Gauff reveals she has taken inspiration from a book she read after beating Jodie Burrage at the Australian Open on Wednesday morning.

The 20-year-old, who is regarded as America’s brightest tennis prospect, won 6-3, 7-5 to book her place in the third round of the competition.

Gauff etched her name into the history books when she won the US Open in 2023.

She failed to add to her Grand Slam haul in 2024, however, at least when it comes to the singles.

Gauff was asked about how she’d been preparing during the off-season following her hard-fought win over Burrage.

And the tennis star revealed she was taking inspriation from a book she’s read as she looks to secure glory Down Under.

“Just a lot of practice and physically preparation and working hard,” she said.

“There is a book I read that basically says that inches turn into miles eventually so everyday matters and that’s not just in tennis but in life where everyday matters.”

Burrage threatened during the early stages of the match.

But Gauff was able to show her quality as she battled her way into the next round of the prestigious competition.

The 20-year-old showed class by hailing Burrage for her performance, saying: “It was tough, she was serving really well so I was just trying to manage that honestly, in pretty much all the first serve points I was starting off in defence, she really stepped her level up in the middle of the second set so I was just trying to be offensive when I could.”

On her own serve, she added: “I guess not to what I did to lose my serve so it’s just trying to do better than the last game.

“I felt like I doubled a little bit but she was returning really well and it put pressure on my serve.

“I think maybe next time mix up the targets a little bit and it was just trying to tell myself to keep it deep when I could and be offensive when I could because if I landed anything short she was hitting a winner.”

Gauff will play Leylah Fernandez in the third round.

Fernandez, who is the 30th seed, beat Cristina Bucșa 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 to advance.
