Peter Wright has claimed that teenage sensation Luke Littler needs to prove his consistency before being considered among darts’ elite players.

The former world champion made the comments ahead of the Bahrain Masters, which begins tomorrow.

Wright acknowledged Littler’s obvious talent but was clear about what the 17-year-old needs to improve.

“Luke is obviously very good. But he’s got to get more consistent,” Wright said.

“He’s not one of the best yet. But he’s obviously got the potential to be,” the 54-year-old added.

Wright also took aim at both Littler and Humphries’ performances in shorter format matches ahead of the Bahrain event.

“At least with the short format we know the two Lukes will be knocked out early because it takes time for them to warm up,” he said.

The Scottish player praised Littler’s World Championship performance, suggesting it was beneficial for the sport.

“We all wanted Littler to win really to expand the game even more. The right person won. It’s great for the sport,” Wright added.

Wright recently stirred controversy at the World Championship by boldly predicting his victory over Luke Humphries – a promise he then fulfilled.

The comments drew criticism from Michael van Gerwen, who said: “Every year at the Worlds, he talks so much nonsense. He’s always allowed to talk c**p. No one takes him serious on the tour.”

Wright dismissed these criticisms, maintaining his competitive spirit.

“It did cause a stir. It’s always good to be talked about. As Michael said, I talk c**p every year,” Wright responded.

“I’ve been playing rubbish for two years. It was nice to show the world I could still play darts.”

LATEST SPORTS NEWS:

Wright revealed he is embracing his departure from the Premier League after an 11-year run in the tournament.

“I’ll have time to rest and be fresher for the floor tournaments and Euros away from the Premier League,” he said.

The veteran player plans to follow Rob Cross’s example of success outside the Premier League.

“I’ll take a leaf out of the Rob Cross book. He wasn’t in the Premier League and for two years he worked hard and all the results came,” Wright explained.

He added that he would have declined a Premier League spot anyway, saying: “It’s hard being a Premier League player.

“I’m looking forward to enjoying time at home with the family and the cats.”
