Plans were submitted to bring the garages back into use to store vehicles

Plans to use redundant garages to store vehicles in Peterborough have been refused. Mr A Dhanji submitted a planning application to Peterborough City Council in September which would have seen 15 redundant garage spaces used off Padholme Road.

The site at Corcoran Mews is currently overgrown with vegetation and attracting anti-social behaviour, according to planning documents.

Mr Dhanji intended to visit the site two to three times a week to either take a vehicle out of the garages or bring a vehicle in.

“As the previous use of the site was a garage, there is no difference from the previous use, as the existing garages will be used for storing vehicles,” planning documents stated.

However, city council planners decided to refuse the application on Friday, December 12, after concerns were raised by the highways department.

“The proposed access to the site is inadequate and below the standard required by reason of substandard vehicle to vehicle visibility splays, vehicle to pedestrian visibility splays and access width,” the local highway authority stated.

“As a consequence, the manoeuvring of vehicles likely to be generated by the proposed development would have an adverse effect on the safety of users of the adjoining public highway.”

It was also noted that the proposal would not provide adequate parking facilities, with 47 spaces being required in total. The applicant has the right to appeal the decision within six months.
