When hardware deals sound too good to be true, they usually are. This is the AsRock Rack 4U12G BC-250, a 12-Node server stuffed to the gills with Zen 2 Cores and RDNA2 graphics… It’s the same APU that powers the Playstation 5, so surely it should be able to play games, right?

Right???

But first… What am I drinking???

12 Failures means I needed a 12-year scotch. Highland Park 12 was the only logical option.

I think AMD had to handicap themselves by signing non-competes with Sony and Microsoft. Really limits what they can do in the APU world.

Can it be used for a local AI box? Like running your own jarvis? Thanks for trying so hard on this! So sad it just wasnt made to be

It's not even just that the fans are loud… that frequency seems particularly brutal.

DXVK works fine on windows, the dlls just need to be dropped into the game dir – some games run better via dxvk than native DirectX.

OK Now I am going to go the FreeBSD route, the ps5 runs on a version of freebsd 11.1/11.2. I will start there and see what vommit I come up with. Wish me luck fellas!

I'm working on using a BC-250 as a standalone computer, and this video has plenty of information that I haven't found anywhere else simply because of how obscure this server is. Hopefully this video helps bring more attention to this device because it's got a ton of untapped potential!

  27. @FunDumb

    October 20, 2024 at 6:42 am

Very cool, or loud af, depending on how you look at it.

  28. @movax20h

    October 20, 2024 at 6:42 am

BTW. You can get them for 499$ (free shipping). It is an insane good value, but you need to take into consideration that this is also consuming quite a bit of power, especially if using GPUs. For CPU workloads, it would be better to get a modern and faster single EPYC system, with way way more cores, and way way more faster storage and networking, on one system. Yes, would be more expensive one time buy, but will be also more efficient. For sporadic use as Kubernetes test bed, it can also be interesting (but then something like Rasberry Pi is also an option). So really only cases where this is really useful is when you have some distributed workloads that also need GPU, and 1Gbps NIC is not a bottleneck. I can see this used possibly as some place to learn HPC with OpenCL/ROCm/Vulkan, or maybe video transcoding. (These were primarily used for crypto mining, but once GPU is obsolete, like this one, it makes zero sense to use it for mining, with more efficient GPUs or ASICs). So only useful for fun, if you can grab few, and you have really cheap electricity.

If AsRock fixes firmware, so the enter proper idle states, then maybe, otherwise indeed, it is super inefficient.

I am still thinking to grab few of these systems. The price is almost free, and if you do not use GPU, the efficiency is pretty decent. I am sure you can downclock these fans to be more reasonable.

You get 72 CPU cores, for basically free, which is cool. Yes, you can get better single or dual sockets that can do more, but not for so low price.

    October 20, 2024 at 6:42 am

Do you know if booting over network is possible (BOOTP+PXE)?

do the gpus work for ai?

  34. @chrisb6637

    October 20, 2024 at 6:42 am

Probably the most powerful, yet useless piece of kit I've ever seen. The annoying thing is it could have been useful, just with some minor tweaks. Though the power draw will always let it down. I have a rack of Dells that don't use 2kW.

  35. @cppctek

    October 20, 2024 at 6:42 am

I really think there’s gotta be a way for this to work one day

  36. @proceduralgamesproductions7391

    October 20, 2024 at 6:42 am

I was just looking at these and doing some research to see if anyone made any progress on getting the 3d hardware acceleration working because i wanted to use them as a 3d rendering farm hopefully someone will figure something out because spec wise each node has roughly the same class/performance of hardware as my computer and I can buy a 12 node server for $500 and I don't really care about the power usage

  37. @joeyjojojr.shabadoo915

    October 20, 2024 at 6:42 am

I don't know how I missed this video until now. I have been watching Jeff long enough to know that it's NEVER a good sign when the booze gets served BEFORE the product is introduced.

  38. @joeyjojojr.shabadoo915

    October 20, 2024 at 6:42 am

Is there any way to 'deconstruct' any of the mining software, as it's likely Linux based, in order to get an idea for the GPU ? With the high idle power, this would be a power-on to use and shut down when complete type of system, that would likely never idle. It would be great to get it to work as cluster for some AI workload. Since there are likely enough of these now out in the secondary market, I am sure that someone will get some sort of AI training pipeline to work on them. Just add an NVME to each, along with a network cable and boom – like having your own home 'SuperComputer' (in a perfect world that is).

  39. @joeyjojojr.shabadoo915

    October 20, 2024 at 6:42 am

LAST IDEA: We need to see enough of these end up in Shenzhen China so that they can be stripped of all components and mem, create new PCB's and start a new budget Mobo market segment to add to their revival of LGA 115x/1356/1366/2011 offerings that have all done well in the market.

  41. @natc9

Can it be use for machine learning?

  42. @lgfromie

    October 20, 2024 at 6:42 am

Uuh, probably a bit late, but people have now gotten GPU acceleration to work on these cards so it can now game

  43. @CraftComputing

    October 20, 2024 at 6:42 am

@carbogger shared an updated BIOS. Here is v5 for those looking for it – https://bit.ly/3Pv2GFx
I might give one final crack at this after updating. If there's no second video, you already know why.

Here, Cryptography in computer network is described in this video.

Cryptography is derived from the Greek word, which means “Hidden Secrets.” In other words, it is an art in which we can protect our data and information. Through cryptography, we convert our data into Unreadable Secret Codes, called Cipher Text and can read this data only, which will have the secret key to decrypt it.
