AMD's NEW Cheap Server Chip is FINALLY Here

AMD has claimed leadership in the entry-level server space with the new AMD EPYC 4004 series. Intel needs to go do a re-do as AMD enters the market with EPYC processors that are based on an AMD Ryzen platform.

Just grabbed a couple of the 1U version of that chassis for redundant 25GbE firewalls.

I wish that motherboard came in a ATX size as well. I could really use the extra pci-e lan

But in the end you're stuck with an AMD chip 🤮🚮😭

These seem like Ryzen CPU's but with server focus over gaming focus EG affordable power budget, it will come down to servers and mobo's available for them and price. I use N100 for server due to such low power need and full feature set on chip like AVX512 support etc. But I fucking hate Intel but tech wise, price wise and ethically. Plus intle do shit like charge for unlocking ECC memory etc.

Will these work in desktop boards like ASUS Creator lineup (supports ecc ram)?

Dual sockets maybe? One of them doesn't have a P in the name. Edit: That's a typo; isn't it? Been waiting for dual socket Ryzen. When lord? Whens gon be my time.

    October 20, 2024 at 4:12 pm

Man, all of the better fits come out after I get 'done' upgrading other paths. I do really hope next gen ryzen gets some more lanes to work with, I know you run the risk of cannibalizing market sectors but it would be nice if I could use ryzen or these new ryzen-like EPYCs at least to get some extra connectivity in the future without having to go full threadripper/EPYC, obviously needs a new socket if they do but we can hope.

Has anybody tried ESXi on an EPYC 4004 based system yet? How well does it work (if at all)?

Are reputable 48 GB DDR5 ECC UDIMMs available? I looked last week and found only NEMIX-branded parts.

Cant see many reasons to consider this cpu

  12. @novantha1

    October 20, 2024 at 4:12 pm

I wonder if it's possible to bifurcate the PCIe lanes. I have a couple of AI workloads that are (somehow) not as PCIe bandwidth bottlenecked as you would expect, so I could possibly get away with x4 connections on a huge number of GPUs, and this server would fit really well with my power consumption issues.

The only Ryzen desktop SKUs that have been found to not support ECC are the xxxxG class CPUs, with even the xxxxGE Pro APU SKUs supporting ECC memory if one is in the market for an APU. Moreover, unless these are monolithic like a 4750GE is then they'll still have Ryzen's piss poor idle power draw and will likely just be far worse homelab style server parts. It really makes you wonder who these are actually for, the chips will be more expensive with next to 0 actual benefit over their Ryzen line. If there is an 8700G Pro that'll piss all over these offerings for the typical user.

TLDR .. so its just a ryzen re-badge with the addition of a 4 core version

  16. @isbestlizard

Oof only 2 channels of DD5 not saying memory bandwidth these days is everything but in the long run it's everything

    October 20, 2024 at 4:12 pm

I'd love to build an epyc home supercomputer but these nodes are too crippled with pcie/memory bandwidth don't forget need some infiniband or something for each node eating at least 8 probably 16 lanes too just not enough 🙁

  18. @user-cm3wd5hk1p

    October 20, 2024 at 4:12 pm

Give me 3 PCIe 4.0×16 lanes and I’d be happy.

HBA, GPU for gaming VM, and GPU for transcoding.

Or HBA 16i, HBA 8 or 16e, and GPU for transcoding.

I’m a beginner at home lab stuff and most of it started from desire for media server and headless gaming machine so I can play on any screen in the house as that’s always changing of when/where I can play

    October 20, 2024 at 4:12 pm

Would the 16 core Epyc 4665P draw 170w if given a 12 core 4464P (65w) workload on Linux? The mixed core thing that Intel has been doing says otherwise but I thought the fundamental result was race to finish so you can power down the core.

    October 20, 2024 at 4:12 pm

    Wow

  26. @omarassadi2455

    October 20, 2024 at 4:12 pm

Wow… Is this AMD whitepaper real? I couldn't find anyone confirm or deny whether these support SEV, but I did come across:

"EPYC 4004 I/O DIE: … The AMD Secure Processor controls encryption in the memory
controllers, however it does not support the additional memory
and power requirements for Secure Encrypted Virtualization (SEV)
    features."

If they really did that, then just wow; do these bring /anything/ over desktop Ryzens, aside from ticking a box for people who want "server-grade"? Many of us have been using the desktop parts, with ECC and everything else mentioned, since, at least, the 3xxx series for things like game servers, where providers essentially have been forced to go with less-traditional platforms due to absurdly poor parallelization of software like SRCDS, [most implementations of] Minecraft, etc.

I have always been a little peeved about the segmentation of some of these features, but until I read that, I was at least hopeful that we could finally have strong single-thread performance VMs with decent security guarantees. However, if they left it for big EPYC only, then I really personally couldn't care less about the box-ticking aspect, given the fact that, if you're buying from Asrock Rack or similar, which most people in that space would be for BMC reasons alone, they aren't going to sell you a board with firmware that doesn't support ECC UDIMMs.

It's incredibly frustrating for me. I get not wanting to cannibalize your product line, but there is nothing truly competitive, that I am aware of, on SP5 or LGA 4677; there is, in essence, nothing to cannibalize, because we have totally different needs; I am totally willing to pay a price premium for absurd single-core performance, even if that means drawing 2-4x the power, paying double the price, losing out on RDIMM support, and losing some level of stability — there is a non-zero chunk of the market that runs software that either cannot or will not be rewritten to scale horizontally, or is super latency-critical, etc, and for these applications some trade-offs are acceptable, but I do wish we didn't have to compromise on basic things like, "Hey, yes, we can provide everything you need, but you have to just trust us that we aren't snooping on your VMs".

Anyway, you can imagine my excitement and then immediate sadness when Sapphire Rapids WS came out: up to 24 P-core low-latency MONOLITHIC dies? quad-channel ECC? decent PCI-E lanes? OVERCLOCKABLE — I can really delid and liquid cool these and crank them to a thousand watts if I need to? These sound perfect – why aren't these flying off the shelf?

Oh, what's up? Oh, they cut out QAT and nearly everything else that Sapphire Rapids had going for it?

    October 20, 2024 at 4:12 pm

2-3 times the power draw for an extra 4 cores is pretty hard to swallow.

While I get the beauty of the server platform validation which might be a big plus for larger corporations, with a good selection of components, you could have gotten something with similar capabilities with going with Ryzen for some time now. Tinkerers like me don't really get much more value out of this release. At least not yet. This might change once these EPYCs are more widespread and might get cheaper on the second hand market than their Ryzen counterparts. If I could use these on consumer parts, that might provide some value later down the road.

    October 20, 2024 at 4:12 pm

Seems rather pointless. Just use the same platform and a Ryzen gets the same feature set, right?

You talked about the 4004 series processor supporting only UDIMM ECC memory. What are your thoughts on using it in a TrueNAS Storage Appliance for home use / small business? Is RDIMM more desirable for TrueNAS?

  37. @Goryglory0209

Which MotherBoard to go with this? Intel has so many good boards that can fir a Regular Mid Tower

  38. @CoreyPL

    October 20, 2024 at 4:12 pm

Not having at least 1x10GbE NIC on a brand new 2024 server motherboard is criminal, especially when this server chassis has no local storage options. Why the hell I need to waste a PCI-E slot just to make practically mandatory purchase? With the target market of someone wanting less powerful, jack-of-all-trades server, 10GbE NIC should be included.

  39. @userou-ig1ze

    October 20, 2024 at 4:12 pm

So how many m2 ssds with 3gb read write can fit into this thing

  40. @cameramaker

    October 20, 2024 at 4:12 pm

Its too much noise – if the only difference is just the ECC support, so Epyc AM5 is just a new name for a Ryzen Pro AM5. I would rather expect RDIMM support, but thats not happening … also the DDR5 RDIMMs now have a different notch? Thats a bummer.. no way this is a proper server. AMD just went to copy the Intel E3/E2xxx way and provided zero difference/improvement 🙁 The Asus system is also weird.. no hotswap storage? is this a rackmount workstation / render node, whatever? Its crippled to something very unusual and I can not think of who they targeted here.

Here, Cryptography in computer network is described in this video.

Cryptography is derived from the Greek word, which means “Hidden Secrets.” In other words, it is an art in which we can protect our data and information. Through cryptography, we convert our data into Unreadable Secret Codes, called Cipher Text and can read this data only, which will have the secret key to decrypt it.
