Lewis Hamilton crashes out just THREE LAPS into US Grand Prix as birthday boy Charles Leclerc coasts to victory
A FERRARI double rained on the parade of Max Verstappen and Lando Norris’ charge to the title.
It truly was the Wild West on track from start to finish as Norris and Verstappen produced an almighty scrap as they battled nose to tail for third-place from 12-laps to go.
The top two positions had already been snatched from their clutches as birthday boy Charles Leclerc capitalised on a poor start from pole-sitter Norris to cross the line in first.
Carlos Sainz took second-place eight seconds behind his teammate but no one will care.
All eyes had been on Norris and Verstappen’s all out war with the Dutchman producing a defensive masterclass until five-laps-to-go.
Norris overtook the Red Bull on lap 51 but went off the track and was slapped with a five-second penalty meaning he had to settle for fourth behind third-place Verstappen.
The Texas rodeo continued as seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton was forced to RETIRE just three laps in after spinning off at Turn 19 and beaching himself on the gravel.
Norris knew it was pretty much do or die in Texas, given Verstappen soared to victory in Saturday’s sprint-race and stretching his lead to 54 points in the driver’s championship.
Verstappen’s world championship lead is now up to 57 points, having built it by five points across the weekend, while Norris’ hopes of chasing down the Dutchman have been massively dented with five rounds remaining.
The McLaren driver, whose starts have been his Achilles’ heel, got off well but left too much space for Verstappen to bulldoze inside.

It is the fifth race this season that he has started on pole but not been in the lead after the opening lap, having done the same at the Spanish, Hungarian, Dutch and Italian Grands Prix.
The Red Bull ran Norris wide on the way out of the first corner, and Leclerc swept through to take the lead from fourth.
The other Ferrari, of Sainz, also nipped past Norris, leaving the McLaren in fourth.
McLaren reported the incident as they felt Verstappen pushed him wide, but really Norris was not aggressive enough and only had himself to blame.
Norris said on his team radio: “He clearly pushed me off. He had no intent to make the corner.
“Even he went off the track. I had to avoid crashing into him or him into me.”
There was a safety car on lap 3 as disaster struck forHamilton who was forced to retire as he spun off and beached himself on the gravel on Turn 19.
It was the exact same spot his teammate Russell spun out in qualifying and there wasn’t much the seven-time world champion could do about it.
It prompted the first Safety Car since the Canadian Grand Prix in June and at the restart Leclerc struggled to create a gap to Verstappen but managed to make it through the first corner in the lead.
On lap 17 Toto Wolff came on the radio to slam the “total joke” five-second penalty for an overtake on for allegedly forcing Valtteri Bottas off the track in an overtake earlier on.
Half way through and Leclerc was a whopping ten seconds ahead of Verstappen, but the Ferrari driver did not want to be left out as bait for too long before pitting.
He said on his team radio: “Don’t leave me out for too long. I do not want to be under pressure.”
By lap 36, Norris and Verstappen were tussling for third place as the McLaren was closing in on his rival.
Verstappen was fuming and said on his team radio: “These tyres just aren’t good. I can’t brake, I can’t attack anything.”
Second-placed Sainz was relentless and by lap 43 hit back with another fastest lap, cranking up the pressure on his teammate out front.
Norris continued to snap at Verstappen’s heels and closed the gap to just 0.6 seconds with 12 laps to go.
The Dutchman knew he had a race on his hands and kept the McLaren at bay with text-book defense until lap 52.
Norris got the move down at Turn 12 but it appeared to be off the track and Verstappen fumed on his team radio: “He overtook me outside of the track.”
Hamilton said after the race: “I have never spun especially on the second lap, it’s devastating to not be in the race because I love this race.
“It’s obviously a similar situation to George yesterday, the car is very sensitive, it started bouncing, I wasn’t even pushing. I lost a load of the rear and it came round.”
On hoping for another win in the Mercedes with five races to go, he added: “Of course, that’s what we’re working towards.
“That is painful, it’s never happened to me before but this weekend the confidence had gone already from the first spin we had.
“We need to go back to the drawing board and figure out what has been wrong with the car this weekend because it’s not been normal. We will work on it and try and come back stronger.”

Kyle Walker’s wife Annie Kilner looks unrecognisable in incredible 2010 throwback picture
KYLE WALKER’S wife Annie Kilner looks unrecognisable in a dazzling photo she shared on social media.
The partner of the England and Manchester City star uploaded a snap of her sat in the back of a taxi on a night out back in 2010.
Annie has posted a snap on her Instagram story of what she called “How Saturday night looked in 2010”.
And it certainly looks different.
Wearing a lacy crop-top in what looks like the back of a cab, she gazed thoughtfully out of the window with lights zooming past outside.
Annie already knew Walker by then – as they first met in his home town of Sheffield as teenagers.
The couple married in Cheshire three years ago.
Now Annie is preparing to fight for half of the England star’s £27million wealth.
The mother of four, 32, has served divorce papers on the football ace.
And The Sun revealed Walker’s ex-lover Lauryn Goodman, the mum to two of his kids, reported Annie to police over an “‘I want her dead” WhatsApp message.
Officers told Lauryn the message – sent to someone else – was a “conditional threat”.
They said Lauryn would need to take civil action if she wanted to pursue the matter further.
We understand divorce papers were served weeks ago.
A source said: “Annie doesn’t want her share to pay for his children with Lauryn.
“She doesn’t want her children to have a penny but she knows he has to legally.
“Annie doesn’t know what Kyle is spending his money on and wants control of her share.”
She is known to have twice kicked the 34-year-out of their Cheshire home.
The first time was when Ex on the Beach TV reality star Laura Brown said she romped with Walker in his Bentley.
Annie booted him out but allowed him back.
She then told him to leave again when he said Lauryn was having his baby.
We revealed earlier this month Annie had sent contentious WhatsApp messages to a pal after Lauryn’s son Kairo – fathered by Walker – was born in 2020.
Our source said: “Friends had told Lauryn about the ‘I want her dead’ threat so she decided to put it on record with the police in case anything happened with her and her two children.”
Lauryn found out about them last December and contacted police the following month.
Officers judged that Annie had made a “conditional threat” and decided not to speak to her, although the report was kept on file.
The Sun approached Annie’s representative and Cheshire Police for comment.

Ricky Pearsall: San Francisco 49ers rookie makes NFL debut 50 days after shooting
“We hadn’t seen him out there in a while going with the team,” Shanahan added.
“Wednesday, he looked great, Thursday, he was even better, and today he was even more comfortable. It made the decision pretty easy.”
Pearsall was drafted in the first round by the 49ers out of the University of Florida, and big things were expected of him in making the step up to the NFL.
But after dealing with a shoulder injury in the summer, he was then shot in the incident in San Francisco’s Union Square, when he was taken to hospital with a bullet wound to the chest.
Pearsall was released after just one night in hospital as a lucky escape saw the bullet miss any vital organs.
And he impressed his new team-mates immediately upon his return to training.
“He’s doing a really good job, obviously being back and just bringing the juice, going really fast in and out of his cuts and creating some really good separation,” said 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy.
“When you’ve got a guy like Ricky that can win man-to-man match-ups and then also open up some other guys too, that’s always a good thing. So I’m excited to see what he does.”
Listen to live commentary as the Kansas City Chiefs visit the San Francisco 49ers this Sunday on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra and the BBC Sport website and app (from 21:00 BST).

Is Fabrizio Romano a time traveller? Fans spot his eerie sub ‘leak’ during Liverpool’s win over Chelsea
FORGET mystic meerkats, uncanny octopuses and even good old-fashioned crystal balls – this eerie Anfield tale might freak you out.
Fans reckon Fabrizio Romano metamorphosed from transfer guru to “time traveller” – as he spooked them out with his mid-match messages in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Chelsea.
The journalist’s millions of followers already believe he is in the loop with his transfer insights – but never before in a TIME loop.
Romano saw the Reds return top of the Premier League with Arne Slot‘s 10th victory in 11 matches since his summer arrival as boss.
But amid a new blitz of VAR dramas, the Italian sparked a conspiracy – with the mysterious timing of his posts about Diogo Jota.
The Liverpool winger was caught up in a major first-half talking point.
With the score goalless, the Portuguese hero escaped through the middle but was hauled down by Tosin Adarabioyo.
The Chelsea centre-back was only booked, leaving Arsenal fans furious as they claimed William Saliba’s red-card foul 24 hours earlier was identical.
Jota never fully recovered from the knock, meaning he was replaced by Darwin Nunez on the half-hour.
Unfortunate, you might think, but nothing untoward.

Except, as one fan posted: “16:43pm: Fabrizio Romano tweets Diogo Jota has left the pitch with an injury despite him not.
“17:02pm: Diogo Jota leaves the pitch with an injury. Is this brother a time traveller…?”
A second observer added: “At least now we know why he knows all the transfer news? He’s a time traveller.”
A third supporter noted: “He also got the replacement correct.”
And a few went even further down the “sub leak” rabbit hole with suggestions like: “This just proves that football is scripted.”
But others attempted to ease the conundrum by pointing out: “He left the pitch for a few minutes earlier and Nunez was warming up.”
At least Romano didn’t share extra-early details of how Jota suffered his blow.
Otherwise it might have been a case of Whack to the Future.

SWPL: Glasgow City go top as Rangers rescue a point
Glasgow City go into the international break top of the SWPL after handing unlucky Dundee United the biggest defeat of the season so far.
Extreme weather conditions took their toll on the weekend’s fixtures, with Aberdeen v Motherwell called off and the remaining matches played in stormy conditions.
City moved a point clear of Hearts at the top of the table after racking up 13 without reply against United at Foundation Park, as the bottom side saw their chances of a result end with the dismissal of goalkeeper Beth Rennie inside just two minutes for handling outside the area.
Lisa Evans converted the resultant free kick, before an Emily Whelan hat-trick, braces from Nicole Koslova and Brenna Lovera, and strikes from Natalia Wrobe, Aleigh Gambobe, Sofia Maata, Lisa Forrest and a first goal for the club for Katie Lockwood wrapped up the win.
Hearts had to wait until the 75th minute to breach Montrose’s defences, with Emma Brownlie cross to the back post finding Bayley Hutchison to head home the opener
Within two minutes Hutchison had doubled Hearts’ lead, turning home Sade Adamolekun’s low cross. Adamolekun set up the third with two minutes remaining, putting substitute Monica Forsyth to slot past Montrose goalkeeper Kirsten Pratt.
Edinburgh rivals Hibernian came within seconds of a win over Rangers, before Jo Potter’s side snatched a last-gasp draw in farcical weather conditions at Meadowbank.
Eilidh Adams had put the hosts ahead with her third penalty of the season, but missed from the spot late on as the wind continued to move the ball.
The visitors found a renewed spirit from the save, and pressed Hibs back up the field, winning a free kick in stoppage time. Katie Wilkinson’s effort was saved by Erin Clachers, but Rio Hardy nipped in to blast home the rebound and grab the equaliser.
