A suspected burglar has been arrested after police found him lying under a bed while they searched a home in Manchester.

Officers were on patrol in the Moss Side and Rusholme area when they noticed a man acting suspiciously while riding a bike just before 5pm on Wednesday.

One of the officers then followed the man to a house on nearby Boscombe Street before calling for assistance.

The officers gained entry to the property and suspected something wasn’t quite right when they entered one of the bedrooms.

Bodycam footage released by Greater Manchester Police shows an officer flipping the mattress of a single bed in the corner of the room.

He then lifts up the base of the bed to find a 41-year-old man hiding underneath.

The footage then shows the officer handcuffing the suspect while making him lie on his front on the wooden floor.

GMP said the man is suspected of being a “prolific serious acquisitive crime offender” who is believed to be responsible for a spate of burglaries in the area.

He was arrested on suspicion of burglary and was in custody on Thursday ahead of being questioned by officers.

Police added that during the search of the property they located a 36-year-old man who was wanted by officers for unrelated matters linked to burglary, theft of a bicycle and recall to prison. He was arrested and remains in custody.

Neighbourhood officers were on patrol in the Moss Side and Rusholme area due to a high number of reports of burglaries in the area over the past couple of weeks.

Detective Inspector Natalie McDonald, of GMP’s Manchester Central Neighbourhood Crime Team, said: “This is a really great example of proactive policing, we knew there was a local issue occurring over the past couple of weeks in the Rusholme and Moss Side areas and we have placed officers on patrol in specific areas at the times we know burglaries are occurring.

“It shows that when we put officers in the right places at the right time, we see arrests of those who we believe are blighting your local areas.”
