There is no uniform approach to youth development among Premier League clubs.

International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) figures for 2025-26 show club-trained players accounted for 16.2% of Manchester City‘s Premier League minutes, followed by Chelsea on 15.5% and Brighton on 12.5%.

CIES defines a club-trained player as someone registered with their current club for at least three full seasons, or 36 months, between the ages of 15 and 21. That means an 18-year-old recruited from an EFL academy can still go on to qualify as club-trained if he spends the next three seasons with his new Premier League club.

At the other end of the scale, Tottenham‘s club-trained players accounted for just 0.1% of league minutes, while Bournemouth, Brentford and Burnley were all at zero.

Recruiting from EFL and Scottish academies therefore offers another way of building that development pipeline.

Rather than relying solely on players who have been with a club since childhood, a Premier League side can identify somebody developed elsewhere, bring them into their under-21 structure at 17, 18 or 19 and take responsibility for the final stages of their development.

The numbers do not yet show a relentless increase. There were 18 such moves in 2023-24, meaning this summer’s 14 cannot be described as unprecedented.

But the concentration of 18-year-olds and League One players suggests clubs are becoming increasingly precise about the market they are targeting.

For EFL clubs, that raises questions over how long their best youngsters can realistically be retained.

For Premier League clubs, the calculation is different. The next Watkins, Eze, Wharton or Semenyo may already be somewhere further down the pyramid. The challenge is finding them before everybody else does.

Crews were called to incidents in Northallerton, Acomb, Monk Fryston, York, Selby and Scarborough, with several alerts found to involve supervised barbecues or braziers.

One fire in a York field was believed to have started after a pile of leaves and organic matter self-combusted.

A crew from Northallerton responded to reports of smoke at about 7.08pm, which turned out to be a supervised barbecue.

An hour later, Acomb firefighters were called to a similar incident involving a brazier. However, due to embers coming from it, the crew extinguished the fire using a hose.

A crew from Selby responded to reports of smoke coming from a controlled burn in the Monk Fryston area at 8.14pm, which turned out to be a false alarm.

Later, at 8.39pm, York firefighters responded to a fire in a field.

The fire turned out to be a pile of leaves and organic matter, which was believed to have caught fire due to self-combustion. Crews used a hose to dampen down the area.

At 9.04pm, Scarborough firefighters were called to a fire in the rear garden of a property in Eastfield.

This turned out to be a controlled burn in a brazier and advice was given to the person in attendance.

At around 9.12pm, York firefighters were called to another garden fire.

This was also a small fire in a brazier, under supervision, and advice was given.

At 4.39am, York firefighters responded to an automatic fire alarm activation, which turned out to be a false alarm.

The shallower an earthquake is, the more destructive its effects on the surface tend to be.

Strong aftershocks were felt in the same area, including one with a magnitude of 6.1.

Video taken at the port in Maumere showed large chunks of concrete breaking off the terminal building onto passengers waiting to board an inter-island ferry. Some were thrown into the sea when the gangway to a ship collapsed.

Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena, governor of East Nusa Tenggara province, told a news conference that they were killed in their sleep by collapsing rubble.

Arnold Welianto, who lives in Talibura, a village near the coastline in Sikka, East Nusa Tenggara, said he was awoken by the “very strong shaking”, adding: “I was startled awake and immediately went to my child’s room.”

He told the BBC that many people had already fled into the hills.

“Some other residents were standing along the roadside because the sea had also receded,” he explained. “The water remained low for quite some time, so everyone panicked and ran – I went around to the community health centre, and the people there had already been evacuated.”

A tsunami warning was issued but lifted around three hours after the initial jolt when no significant sea level rise was detected.

A stream of people could be seen moving inland on motorbikes after authorities issued a tsunami warning. BNPB said 2,000 people had evacuated or relocated on their own.

It said three fatalities had been recorded in Sikka province, six in Manggarai province, and five in East Manggarai province.

At least two others had been seriously injured and 11 slightly injured, the disaster agency added.

The original boathouse dates back to 1900

A Cambridge University college is looking to expand its boathouse. Clare College’s boathouse was constructed between around 1900.

Located on the River Cam near Cutter Ferry Lane, it is home to Clare Boat Club and Clare Hall Boat Club. The college said that the 120-year-old building has become “outdated”.

As a result, Clare College plans to extend and renovate the boathouse. In documents explaining the plans, it said that a workshop that is part of the building has “deteriorated”. There is also a “lack of insulation” and “unsatisfactory” shower and changing facilities.

The college also said there is “subsidence on the hard landscaping”, as well as “cracking” brickwork. The plans to renovate and expand, if approved, will make “major improvements” to access, the documents said.

They added: “[There will be] protected and safer indoor racking for boats currently stored outside. Increased access to gym facilities for all three rowing clubs. Spacious and modern changing facilities, suitable for any future junior rowers in town rowing clubs.”

If approved, the college hopes to “echo and complement” the design of the original boathouse from 1900. It would use materials including darker-toned brick and zinc.

Clare College is currently holding a public consultation to gain the public’s views on the plans. The college is holding two events to give people a chance to view the plans.

These will be held on: Saturday, August 15, from 11am until 1pm and Thursday, September 3, from 7pm until 9pm. These will be held at the boathouse in Cutter Ferry Lane, CB1 1JN.

Werro survived an almighty scare on Thursday when she suffered a nasty fall in her semi-final, before later being reinstated in the competition.

Recovering impressively both physically and mentally from that shock, she showed great maturity to hold off Hodgkinson in the tense closing stages – while breaking a championship record that had stood since 1982.

“I knew I could be European champion one day. I hope to be faster and faster next year,” Werro said.

“When I was a child, my dad used to tell me I have to be a lion. I shouldn’t be shy and let other athletes go past me, so I decided to do a celebration with that when I crossed the line.”

In claiming her first senior international title, Werro has proven she is ready to rival the Briton for the sport’s biggest prizes for years to come.

“Audrey Werro is still young and that was a huge amount of pressure, even without the fall and the bruising,” former marathon world record holder Paula Radcliffe told BBC TV.

“She pulled it together and took the race by the scruff of the neck, which I think Keely did intend for her to do – but she thought she could come back at her.

“Werro just had another gear.”

Hodgkinson jokingly removed her medal in disgust when asked how she felt after the final.

Despite her disappointment, this was her 12th senior international medal and she continues to progress her times, lowering her personal best in all but her injury-devastated 2025 season across the past four years.

Hodgkinson has long maintained that she has felt the world record is within her reach.

Going forward, she will be aware that may soon be required just to win the titles she craves.

Rory McIlroy has the opportunity to surpass the great Tiger Woods in the coming weeks – but one of his biggest rivals might beat him to it.

McIlroy is competing in the FedEx Cup playoffs this month, with huge prize money on offer for the world’s best players.

The Holywood star’s career earnings on the PGA Tour currently stand at a whopping $116,446,772.

And he has every chance of eclipsing 15-time major champion Woods on the all-time PGA Tour earnings list.

Woods, arguably the greatest golfer in history, currently leads the way with $120,999,166 to his name.

But McIlroy is just $4,552,394 behind Woods, a gap the 37-year-old could easily bridge this month.

This week at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, players are competing for a $3.6million first prize before playing for the same amount at the BMW Championship in Missouri next week.

And if McIlroy has not surpassed Woods by then, he will have a huge opportunity at the season-ending Tour Championship later this month, where the winner will pocket $10million.

However, McIlroy could well be beaten to the punch by current world No.1 Scottie Scheffler.

Despite being seven years McIlroy’s junior, Scheffler has been the dominant player in world golf during a period in which prize money on the PGA Tour has skyrocketed.

The American has competed in just 167 PGA Tour events but trails McIlroy on the all-time earnings list by less than $100,000.

The One Show’s 20th anniversary special was interrupted on Friday night by the government’s emergency wildfire alert. 

The alert was sent to mobile phones across the country at 7pm warning against lighting anything that could spark a wildfire, including barbecues, campfires and fireworks. 

As phones began to ring throughout the studio, host Alex Jones, 49, who clearly did not know the alarm would be issued, said: ‘You couldn’t make that up could you.

‘I think that’s the fire alarm…I’m doing my best to keep a straight face. But we continue’, while her co-host Roman Kemp, 33, looked equally as confused.

It is the largest ever use of the technology since the emergency alert system was introduced in 2023. 

The alert said: ‘There is a very high risk of wildfires nationally.

‘Residents, landowners and visitors should not undertake any activity that could start a fire, including disposable barbecues, fire pits, garden incinerators or fireworks.

‘Even a small flame can rapidly develop into a major wildfire placing lives, homes, businesses and emergency responders at risk.’

Roman later clarified: ‘As you will probably be aware that was actually a wildfire alert on everyone’s phones.

‘You would have heard it on the opening of our show, but as always we hope everyone is staying safe, of course.’

Andy Burnham wrote on X:  ‘This evening, an Emergency Alert has been sent to people across England and Wales as the wildfire risk remains very high. The request came directly from Fire and Rescue Services. 

‘I was in Stourbridge today and saw first-hand the devastating impact these fires have had on people’s homes and lives. Our priority now is to keep everyone safe and prevent more fires from starting. 

‘Our firefighters and emergency responders are working around the clock in incredibly difficult conditions. We can all help them. Please take the Emergency Alert seriously and follow the guidance in place.’

The emergency alert warned that even small flames could ‘rapidly develop into a major wildfire’.

Paramedics treated 54 people in the West Midlands, with 19 admitted to hospital, after several wildfires broke out yesterday during Britain’s fifth warmest day on record.

Some 19 homes were fully destroyed and 18 damaged by a major wildfire which spread across 500 acres in Stourbridge, injuring six people including three firefighters.

TeeClub owners have assured residents there will be strict management of the outdoor area.

Salford’s first indoor golf venue has been given the greenlight to expand its drinks offerings – despite worries that it could ‘turn into a sports bar’. TeeClub at Sovereign Point can now open a small drinks terrace on the Quays, after a licensing committee approved the expansion.

The venue’s main source of business is a digital driving range for golf enthusiasts, using state-of-the-art Trackman simulators that can recreate more than 450 world-famous golf courses.

The indoor sports centre, which opened in 2025, also has a bar and café, where it serves up pints, stonebaked pizzas, and paninis at tables overlooking the canal.

Now, golfers will be able to enjoy their drinks in the summer weather, after councillors approved an application for ‘a licence to permit the sale by retail of alcohol for consumption on the external seating area immediately outside the premises’.

Business owner Nick Holmes told the panel: “We have a beautiful outdoor space right outside the club with a really nice outlook. It will be really beneficial for us throughout the warmer months to receive income from that space. We’re an indoor golf club so our income is seasonal. We thrive in the winter months and then it drops off in the summer.

“If people stay and have a glass of wine and a pizza, that makes a really big difference for us.”

But Jack Traynor, speaking on behalf of tenants at Sovereign Point, shared he was worried about the impact on local residents.

Mr Traynor said: “We were told the business was going to be an indoor golf club, but when it opened, it had adverts for beer and pitchers on the walls and you can’t see the golf element from the street. It looks like a sports bar.

“Our worry if they add an outdoor area is that it’s moving more and more in that direction. If we’d known that’s what the business would be, we would have opposed the original alcohol license. We’re just worried about people drinking and smoking and congregating in front of our residential building.”

But business manager Isla Kirkham said the business is ‘constantly monitoring’ behaviour because of the ‘really expensive tech in the club’.

She said: “We can’t run as a sports bar. We’re constantly monitoring what’s going on – if a ball’s been hit the wrong way, we know about it.”

The committee granted the extension of the license on two conditions – that there are clear no smoking signs on the outdoor tables and no standing drinking.

In the eBay listing, it stated: “The product is a genuine and rare 2009 Kew Gardens 50p coin from the United Kingdom. This collectible coin features a specific design related to the Kew Gardens theme, making it a unique addition to any coin collection.

“With no certification but originating from Great Britain, this circulated coin holds historical and monetary value for collectors interested in British decimal coins from the era of Queen Elizabeth II.”

Rare 2009 Kew Gardens 50p Coin Value & Royal Mint History

Released to mark the 250th anniversary of the London gardens, the coin was designed by Christopher Le Brun. It showcases the iconic Chinese Pagoda at the site with an ornamental leafy vine weaving around the structure.

According to the Royal Mint, the Kew Gardens 50p has served as many people’s gateway into coin collecting.

The Royal Mint explained: “Demand for 50p coins was not high when the coin was released into circulation, which explains the low mintage of the piece.

“There have been reports of circulating and commemorative editions of this coin selling for much more than its face value, which has only increased its appeal to collectors.”

The Kew Gardens 50p has just 210,000 minted, which is quite low for a coin in circulation.
