Joshua Báez makes MLB history: Cardinals rookie homers in first three big-league ABs

Published

on

You can’t have a better start to your career than Joshua Báez. Saturday afternoon at Wrigley Field, the St. Louis Cardinals left fielder became the first player in major league history to hit three home runs in his MLB debut, and he did it in his first three at-bats. The first homer came on the very first pitch Báez saw in the show.

“It’s unreal. I really can’t put it into words,” Báez said during a postgame television interview. “Honestly, it’s just a dream come true.”

Báez hit his first home run, a mammoth 449-foot blast, halfway up the bleachers in center. He hit his second home run to left field and his third to right field. That’s impressive all-fields power for any player, let alone a rookie making his MLB debut. Here are Báez’s three home runs from the Cardinals’ 8-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs:

All three home runs came off lefty Matthew Boyd and it was surprising that manager Craig Counsell let Boyd face Báez a third time. He’d already taken him deep twice, it was still a close game (4-3 Cardinals at the time), and Boyd was approaching 90 pitches. Boyd surrendered another home run to Blaze Alexander soon after Báez’s third shot.

“Gosh, that was incredible to watch. And this kid really brings something really cool to this clubhouse,” Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said. “For him to come into his first game and show out the way that he did, that was fun. There was a lot of smiling and that was really, really cool to watch.”

In the eighth inning, Báez had the chance for a fourth home run, but lined out to left field. He went 3 for 4 with the three homers and 5 RBI in the game.

Báez is the eighth player in baseball’s Modern Era (since 1900) to hit multiple home runs in his regular-season MLB debut, and the third this season. Cleveland Guardians outfielder Chase DeLauter did it on Opening Day, though he technically made his debut last postseason. Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Jose Fernandez also hit two homers in his MLB debut on March 31.

Here are the eight players with at least two home runs in their MLB debuts:

Bob Nieman, St. Louis Browns

Nieman and Keith McDonald are the only players other than Báez to hit home runs in their first two MLB at-bats. McDonald hit two homers in his first two at-bats with the Cardinals in 2000, but across two games. He hit a pinch-hit homer in his first at-bat on July 4, then went deep in his first at-bat two days later.

Báez is the second player to hit his first three MLB home runs in the same game. Catcher Seby Zavala, then with the Chicago White Sox, had a three-homer game against the Guardians on July 31, 2021. It was Zavala’s 18th career game.

Báez led minor leagues in homers before promotion

Prior to his MLB debut, Báez was leading the minors with 36 home runs, all at the Triple-A level. He hit .256/.328/.573 in 103 Triple-A games overall and even had a four-homer game back in June. The promotion was certainly deserved. Baseball America ranked Báez the 56th-best prospect in baseball in their August rankings. They call him one of the best power-hitting prospects in the minors, unsurprisingly.

“There’s an edge to it,” Marmol said about Báez on Friday (via MLB.com). “There’s a confidence to it, and he has a work ethic that’s fun to watch, too. He knows how to get after it. He wants to win, and it’s fun to inject that into this clubhouse because we have a lot of guys that are that way.”

Saturday is an important day for MLB rookies. There are 44 days remaining in the season, meaning players called up Saturday (or later) will not accrue the 45 days of service time necessary to exhaust rookie status. That means Báez will remain eligible to win Rookie of the Year next season, which would net St. Louis a Prospect Promotion Incentive draft pick.

Báez, 23, was a second-round pick (No. 54 overall) in the 2021 draft. He hit 22 home runs total from 2022-24, then broke out with 20 between High Class-A and Double-A in 2025 before exploding for those 36 home runs in Triple-A in 2026. Báez had a four-homer game in Triple-A on June 16.

Saturday’s win improved the Cardinals to 62-61 on the season. They’re three games behind the third wild card spot. The Cubs sit in the top wild card spot at 72-52.

Newcastle Knights vs Gold Coast Titans Preview

Newcastle returns home with confidence after consecutive away wins over Brisbane and Canberra strengthened its finals position. The Knights have scored 30 points in both victories and regain Bradman Best and Phoenix Crossland from calf injuries, adding strike and stability to a side that has handled adversity well. Gold Coast has lost momentum sharply, following a promising run with heavy defeats to the Warriors and Cowboys in which it managed only 14 points combined. Lachlan Ilias is named at halfback for the Titans, allowing AJ Brimson to return to the centres, while Bodhi Sharpley could debut from the bench. Newcastle has won four of the past six meetings and cruised to a 36-12 Magic Round victory this season. Its recent record at McDonald Jones Stadium further strengthens the case for another authoritative performance.

Jamal Adams carted off with knee injury, Vikings coach says it’s ‘not good’

Published

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Jamal Adams, the former first-round pick of the New York Jets, was back at MetLife Stadium on Sunday battling for a roster spot with the Minnesota Vikings.

But just two weeks after signing with his new club, it’s not looking great, as he was carted off in the first half of the Vikings’ 13-10 win due to a knee injury.

Adams was covering New York Giants receiver Calvin Austin III in the red zone when he had to start sprinting across the field to handle his route. But Adams fell down to the turf with a non-contact injury, it seemed, and he didn’t get up quickly.

A cart eventually came out onto the turf and brought Adams back to the Vikings’ locker room.

During an in-game interview, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell was asked about Adams’ knee injury, and the veteran sideline leader said it was “not good” after the first look at it.

“In such a short amount of time, Jamal has done such an unbelievable job coming here,” O’Connell said. “You feel his passion every single day. Certainly felt it spending a few moments with him before they took him in.

NFL PLAYERS MAY COLLECTIVELY BARGAIN FOR GRASS FIELDS IN FUTURE NEGOTIATIONS BUT IT WOULD COME AT A COST

“You’re just crushed for him, the role he was kind of paving for himself, and then just having a personality, experience, toughness that he brought in such a short amount of time. We’re going to miss him.”

The fact O’Connell is already saying the team is going to miss him says all you need to know about the severity of the injury for Adams.

It’s a shame considering he was having a great game up to that point, making a key stop on a run play by the Giants and flying around at his linebacker position.

Adams joined the Vikings just before training camp got underway on July 28, where he knew he’d have to battle for a roster spot for the upcoming season.

Heading into his 10th NFL season, Adams has known this feeling, which wasn’t there earlier in his career.

On that MetLife Stadium turf, Adams became a staple for the Jets after they took him sixth overall out of LSU in 2017. He made two Pro Bowls in 2018 and 2019, including a First Team All-Pro selection in the latter season after totaling 6.5 sacks, 75 tackles, two forced fumbles, one pick-six and seven passes defended across 14 games.

But after that season, the Jets traded Adams to the Seattle Seahawks, where he would spend his next four seasons. In 2024, he split time with the Tennessee Titans and Detroit Lions before finding a home with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2025.

Adams transitioned from safety to linebacker last season, and the Vikings were planning to do the same with the 30-year-old before this injury. Adams, though, views himself as a defensive Swiss Army knife, having the ability to be versatile if need be.

Now, Adams will hope that further testing can be graceful in terms of recovery despite non-contact knee injuries usually meaning the worst for athletes.

Where to watch UFC 330: Islam Makhachev vs. Ian Machado Garry start time, live stream

Published

on

Two titles will be on the line on Saturday when UFC 330 comes to Philadelphia. In the night’s main event, Islam Makhachev will make the first defense of his welterweight championship when he faces Ian Machado Garry.

After conquering the lightweight division and making several defenses of the 155-pound championship, Makhachev jumped to the welterweight division, where he immediately won the championship with a dominant performance against Jack Della Maddalena.

Makhachev sits atop the UFC pound-for-pound rankings and is building a legacy that could rival Khabib Nurmagomedov’s by the time Makhachev decides to hang up his gloves.

Sign up for Paramount+ and WATCH UFC 330 LIVE for no additional fee — every UFC numbered event and UFC Fight Night is included with your subscription. Plans start at $8.99/month or $89.99/year!

UFC 330’s main event isn’t the only title fight on the card. UFC women’s strawweight champion Mackenzie Dern makes her first title defense against Gillian Robertson. It’s been nearly a decade since Canada has had a UFC champion. Numerous fighters adorned in red and white have come close, but none have joined Georges St-Pierre and Carlos Newton on the snow-capped mountaintop.

Be sure to keep up with all the action on Saturday with our live coverage of UFC 330, including round-by-round scoring and updated fight results throughout the night!

Elsewhere on Saturday night, Jalin Turner is back in an important lightweight bout against Kaue Fernandes. Turner, 31, ran into a rough patch beginning in 2023 when it looked like he had turned the corner to become a contender. Consecutive losses to Mateusz Gamrot and Dan Hooker stalled his rise. He bounced back with a TKO of King Green to closes the year, but then suffered back-to-back stoppage losses to Renato Moicano and Ignacio Bahamondes in 2024 and 2025. Turner bounced back once more last December with a TKO of Edson Barboza, but he needs another stellar performance like that on Saturday to establish himself in the rankings at 155 pounds.

Plus, a tough battle in the middleweight division is set for the main card when Mansur Abdul-Malik takes on Dustin Stoltzfus. Abdul-Malik, a Contender Series graduate from 2024, has established a 3-1, 1 NC record in five UFC appearances. He’s coming off his first loss in March when he was stopped by Yousri Belgaroui. Every fight he’s had in the UFC has ended before reaching the scorecards. Stoltzfus, meanwhile, has lost three of his last four.

Gilas to form two squads for Fiba qualifiers, Asian Games

Coach Tim Cone will be shooting for success on two fronts over the next month when he prepares Gilas Pilipinas for the Fiba World Cup Asian Qualifiers and the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.

Cone will begin preparations for the Asian Qualifiers on Monday, building a Gilas Pilipinas squad likely to differ from the one that will campaign at the Asian Games.

Article continues after this advertisement

“We’re going to practice [for the two events] separately,” Cone said. “The plan for me is to handle the window until we get it done and then transfer to the Asian Games team.”

Cone will begin preparations for the Asian Qualifiers on Monday, with the aim of beating Jordan and Iran in front of a home crowd on Aug. 28 and Aug. 30 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Once he gets both fixtures out of the way, the PBA’s winningest coach will then begin the task of pruning a list of 30 players down for the Gilas roster that will defend the Asiad crown which Gilas Pilipinas won three years ago in historic and dramatic fashion. The basketball competition of the Asian Games tips off on Sept. 10, nine days before the continental event formally opens.

The Gilas Pilipinas team that will shoot for a World Cup berth will be composed of the usual suspects, including those based in Japan and South Korea like fan favorites Dwight Ramos and Kevin Quiambao. PBA regulars like Juan Gomez de Liano and Scottie Thompson, who returned to action for Barangay Ginebra in Friday’s loss to Meralco, are also expecting call-ups.

Justin Brownlee is also set to return after injuries to his hamstring, knee and leg forced him to miss Gilas’ final game of the third window and the initial half of Ginebra’s PBA Governors’ Cup campaign.

Brownlee, due to arrive Sunday, is also set to don the Gilas colors for the Asian Games, where Cone is likely to form an all-PBA squad due to availability concerns of the national team standouts seeing club action in other countries.

The only common look between both Fiba and Asiad teams is the players they will likely miss.

Quentin Millora-Brown and Mike Phillips are out for health and personal reasons, while Kai Sotto, who spent the past months playing pickup games in his hometown of Las Piñas but is set to be eyeing a US NCAA stint as a backdoor route for his NBA ambition, is once again unlikely to play for Gilas.

Cone will have a lot of names available for the continental Games, as those who aren’t eligible as locals for Fiba tournaments are allowed to suit up in the Asian Games, which only requires a Philippine passport for eligibility.

Rain or Shine’s Adrian Nocum, Blackwater’s Sedrick Barefield, Meralco’s Brandon Bates and Magnolia’s Zavier Lucero are some of the names listed in the initial Asiad pool.

“A lot of them will be some who have played in the past with Gilas, but haven’t been a part of these windows that we’ve been part of,” Cone said. “But we can still get maybe one or two or three from the window team to join. But the bulk of the team will be new for the Asian Games.”

Man United get clearest hint yet over next transfer as target left out of squad

Published

on

Manchester United have gone over a month without making a senior signing during this summer transfer window – but are working on a deal to sign another teenager

Leicester City left Louis Page out of their squad for their opening match of the League One season against Notts County.

Manchester United are working on a deal to sign the England Under-20 international and would welcome the central midfielder into their first-team group if any move materialises. Our colleagues at LeicestershireLive understand that Page’s absence is not transfer-related, with the 18-year-old at Meadow Lane for the match.

Leicester head coach Russell Martin acknowledged on Friday that the club have rejected an offer for their academy graduate. He stated earlier in the week that Page would be in the squad.

Martin said: “Until something comes in that is really brilliant for the club and player and everyone is happy, then Louis stays and he’s in the squad.”

Asked again about Page, he acknowledged: “That’s [the interest] been well-documented, yeah. We turned down an offer for Louis. There’s been a lot of chat all summer about him from various clubs. We had one offer from a club, and that was turned down.”

Elaborating even further, Martin said: “We’re really relaxed about it; we don’t have to sell anyone. I think if we choose to, it’ll be because it’s right for everyone.

“I’ve said this so many times. It’ll be right for the player; it’s something they want to do; it’s right for us because we have enough money that makes it work for us; and it means we can place them, and we’re ready to replace them.

“So the stance will be the same on any player, whether it’s Louis or anyone. There’s no club in world football that isn’t a selling club, unless you’re one of the really big guns at the top of the Premier League.

“Everyone has a price, but clubs are nowhere near the prices for our players at the minute, and there’s more than them [Page and Harry Souttar] that we’ve turned down from, there’s been more offers for other players, but the club’s not in a rush and doesn’t need to do it. We’ll only do it when it’s really right for us.”

Martin has also mentioned United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, this week, with whom the coach worked at Southampton. Asked about Page, he said: “Louis’s a really fantastic young player.

“I obviously know their director of football [Jason Wilcox] at Manchester United very well after spending some time with him at Southampton. We haven’t actually spoke on Louis because he probably knows what I’d say to him and tell him to go away!”

Logan Webb coasted after getting supported by a six-run fourth inning, including a home run by Drew Gilbert, and the San Francisco Giants squared their home series against the Colorado Rockies at a game apiece with a 7-1 triumph Saturday afternoon.

Gilbert finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a career-high-tying three RBIs for the Giants, who would have moved into a last-place tie in the National League West with the Rockies with a third straight defeat.

After the rivals traded third-inning single tallies, the Giants teed off on Rockies starter Michael Lorenzen (3-11) after Jung Hoo Lee and Osleivis Basabe led off the fourth with singles.

A walk to Drew Cavanaugh and sacrifice fly by Turner Hill in his major-league debut gave the hosts the lead for good, before Lorenzen hit Buddy Kennedy and got Christian Koss to ground into a force play at the plate for the first out.

With the bases still loaded, Gilbert then singled to center, plating two runs and ending Lorenzen’s day, and Rafael Devers greeted reliever Parker Mushinski with a ground-rule double that increased the margin to 5-1.

A run-scoring wild pitch and RBI single by Bryce Eldridge made it a six-run inning and a 7-1 advantage.

Comfortably ahead, the Giants pulled Webb (8-7) after six innings in which he allowed one run and four hits. He struck out seven.

The victory gave Webb a winning record for the first time this season. He’s now 12-4 lifetime against Colorado — four more wins than he’s recorded against any other opponent.

Seeking a fourth straight win, the Rockies’ only run against Webb came in the third on an RBI single by Cole Carrigg that scored Ezequiel Tovar.

The Giants countered in the bottom of the inning with Gilbert’s sixth homer, a solo shot.

Lorenzen was charged with six runs in 3 2/3 innings, serving up four hits and three walks. He struck out one.

Lee collected a pair of singles for the Giants, who evened the season series with the Rockies at 6-6. The 13th and final meeting of the year will be on Sunday.

Connor Norby had the only extra-base hit for Colorado, a double. The Rockies were out-hit 10-5.
