Can fashion beat finance? How luxury handbags performed against stocks
The S&P 500 more than doubled in value between the start of 2020 and Oct. 15, 2025. Investing in the large-cap index is a great way to increase your net worth over time, but also a boring way to make a buck — especially compared to owning luxury handbags.
The question is: Can investing in luxury handbags produce returns comparable to the S&P 500? A study by FashioNica analyzed the value gains of high-end handbags, sneakers, jewelry, and watches between 2020 and 2025. The goal was to identify which pieces had appreciated the most and compare their performance to the financial markets.

Collector fashion pieces vs. the S&P 500
Sadly, the logo’d pieces all underperformed relative to the S&P 500. One, a pricey Chanel bag, got close with a 93% gain. Another, a Louis Vuitton x Supreme courier truck, added $64,500 to its value for a 76% gain.
Fashion v. finance: The five-year scorecard
Here’s a look at the best performers and how much they appreciated. Prices shown are in U.S. dollars.

1. Chanel Classic Flap bag: The five-year front-runner
The Chanel Classic Flap bag (2.55 Reissue Medium/225) was the item that appreciated the most, climbing 93% in value between 2020 and 2025. Coco Chanel designed this bag in February 1955 and the reissue was released on its 50th anniversary.
2. Louis Vuitton × Supreme trunk: The heavyweight gainer
The limited-edition Louis Vuitton × Supreme Malle Courrier 90 trunk gained the most in dollars, up $64,500 in five years. The trunk was a product of a heavily promoted 2017 collab with streetwear brand Supreme.
The trunk uses signature Louis Vuitton details including a Gaboon wood body, cowhide leather trim, metal hardware, and quilted interior lining. It also has a Supreme logo across the center.
3. Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami Multicolor Speedy 30
Another LV collab delivered the third-best return among the fashion pieces analyzed. Marc Jacobs, LV’s creative director at the time, partnered with Japanese pop artist Takashi Murakami to update the LV monogram using more than 30 silk-screened colors. The colorful bag was introduced in Spring/Summer 2003.

4. Hermès Birkin 35 Porosus Crocodile Black
The Hermès contribution to the top-five list is the Birkin 35 Porosus Crocodile bag in black, considered one of the world’s rarest bags. The material, skin of the salt-water Crocodylus porosus, is a premium exotic leather known for scales that are larger in the center of the bag and get smaller towards the edges. The purse’s shiny black exterior is complemented by gold hardware.
The Hermès bag has a current estimated value of $64,000, which is 73% higher than its price tag in 2020.
5. Chanel Graffiti Backpack
The Chanel Graffiti Backpack was introduced in the Spring/Summer 2014 collection under Karl Lagerfeld. The canvas bag has a worn, rebellious look adorned with signature brand details, including quilted panels, chain straps, and the 31 Rue Cambon Paris stamp.
You wouldn’t expect a canvas Chanel bag to carry a price tag of $15,000, but hey, there are stranger things.

How to invest in luxury
The FashionNica study reports that seven of the top 10 most-appreciating fashion pieces were handbags. Luxury purses from Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Hermès consistently outperformed sneakers, watches, and jewelry.
Does this mean high-end handbags are a legit investment category? Possibly, but I doubt anyone’s recommending you cash out your 401(k) to buy luxury purses. What you could do is dabble in fashion investing for the same reasons some people collect classic cars: It’s fun and there could be upside.
Follow these guidelines to incorporate your fashion sense into your wealth plan safely:
- Start small. Luxury handbags fall into the alternative asset category. Specifically, they are collectibles like fine art or wine. They can appreciate, but growth isn’t guaranteed, linear, or predictable. Often, you don’t know a collectible’s value until you try to sell it. For those reasons, it’s wise to keep your fashion investment limited to 2% or less of your total portfolio.
- Prioritize storage. You will get the most investment value from a bag that remains unused and well-protected from the elements. If you want to carry your luxury bag now and then, you can — knowing there could be a trade-off. Any signs of wear will lower its gain potential.
- Keep everything. Investors like documentation and complete sets. Store the bag, original packaging, and your receipt in a safe place.
- Lean into the classics. Opt for classic logos, such as Chanel, Hermes, and Louis Vuitton. Bags with neutral colors and classic hardware are safer options than trendier, “it” bags.
- Choose limited runs wisely. Limited editions and special collaborations can be investment hits, or they can flop quickly at the season’s end. Choose something different only if you have an eye for pieces that have staying power.
- Invest for the love of fashion, not for the gains. Don’t use your rent money to buy luxury handbags. The appreciation timeline can be long and uncertain. There are no guarantees with any investment, and collectible fashion pieces are no different.
Luxury fashion won’t replace your retirement fund — but sometimes style and value do overlap. The best approach is to buy what you love and take good care of it. If that pricey bag pays you back 20 years from now, awesome. If not, well, that’s why investors stay diversified.
What is the FashioNica study?
FashioNica examined 20 luxury fashion pieces between 2020 and 2025 to identify the best performers and quantify their appreciation gains.
Is luxury fashion always a good investment?
No, luxury fashion can be a good investment or a bad one. While some handbags performed well, others depreciated. Fashion value depends on demand, brand strategy, and the condition of each piece.
What makes a fashion item appreciate?
Timeless design, limited availability, consistent demand, and strong resale interest all contribute. Pieces like the Chanel Classic Flap tick every box. That’s why their prices can keep climbing.

Butter Yellow Head to Toe
Lisa Yang Tank & Sweater, Leset Pants, Proenza Schouler Heels (more sizes here, similar here), Chanel Bag, Arielle Ratner Necklace
Butter yellow has cemented itself as the shade shaping spring dressing. What began as a dominant presence in ready-to-wear has expanded into handbags, shoes, and accessories, making it easier than ever to build a full look around the color. Rather than using it as a single accent, the most compelling approach right now is full saturation, dressing within one cohesive color story from top to toe.
Worn monochromatically, butter yellow feels sharp and controlled. Flowing cotton pants, a ribbed knit tank, a cropped cashmere turtleneck, or a compact knit maxi skirt all hold the palette effortlessly. A lightweight leather jacket in the same shade deepens the look without breaking it. On the softer side, a fluid wrap skirt, a slim long-sleeve knit, or a structured midi dress keeps the line clean. Finish with suede Mary Janes, a snake-effect heel, a low sneaker, or a tonal shoulder bag to keep everything within the same creamy register.
How I wore it: Palm Beach
In Palm Beach, I wore a Lisa Yang knit tank with the coordinating sweater draped over my shoulders, paired with Leset straight-leg trousers. I kept the palette tight and finished it with my Chanel 25 quilted bag and Proenza Schouler heels in a matching golden tone. The pieces stayed within the same color family, letting knit, tailoring, and quilting create dimension.

Coffee Break: Dash Top Handle Bag

Oooh: this blue Veronica Beard bag caught my attention last week, and I can’t stop thinking about it — I love that color blue!
The Dash bag has been around for a few years and it always looks great — the architectural vibes of the bag mixed with the somewhat loosey goosey flaps. I appreciate the interesting blue-and-white chevron pattern on the crossbody strap here, also.
This version is $595, but Nordstrom also has a few other colors on sale (including “dark raisin,” which has light blue sides). (Huh: and there’s exactly one left of the rather large Dash tote marked 50% down — gogo!)
If you like this exact bag, you can also find it at Veronica Beard, Saks, and Neiman Marcus (as well as Nordstrom).

Can You Wear a Bomber Jacket to the Office?
This post may contain affiliate links and Corporette® may earn commissions for purchases made through links in this post. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

Bomber jackets in sophisticated fabrics have been around for a year or two now — can you wear bomber jackets to the office? I’m excited to hear what you guys think, but I of course have a few ideas…
Can Bomber Jackets Replace a Blazer?
For the most part, I don’t think bomber jackets can replace a blazer — they inherently read as more casual. If you swear by the “third piece” rule for dressing, then yes they can absolutely be your third piece — but in my mind they’re more like a trendy cardigan or sweater jacket or other soft, structured layer.
Because it’s more relaxed, it is likely never going to be appropriate for the most conservative moments like court, formal presentations, or your first week at a job. Instead, it’s like a piece of clothing that we would have said was appropriate for dress-down Friday (back when that was a thing) or non-VIP days. Think internal meetings, travel days, conferences, business casual offices in general.
You can dress it up or down with your accessories and other pieces — add structure like tailored trousers or a crisp blouse to dress it up, and make it more casual with something like pants cut like denim (jeans, cords) or more flowy fabrics (linen, satin).
Are Bomber Jackets Outside Jackets or Inside Jackets?
It depends on the bomber jacket, honestly — I think you have to look at the materials. For example, this suede bomber jacket from Anthropologie with prominent hardware and thick ribbing looks more like an outside jacket to me, as does this canvas version from Aritzia. The knit versions are safe, but some of the leather ones (like this version from All Saints) could be worn inside as well, the way you might have worn a leather moto jacket a few years ago — know your office.
There are other differences between office-appropriate bomber jackets and weekend-only bomber jackets — if it’s nylon, oversized, has patches or is reminiscent of a varsity jacket — probably not for work. If, on the flip side, it’s wool, ponte, crepe, or suede or leather with minimal hardware — then it might be appropriate for work.
Work Outfit Ideas with Bomber Jackets
Bomber Jacket + Crisp Blouse + Wide Legged Trousers

This look from Quince is a great example of a work outfit idea — a crisp blouse adds some structure, as well as a nice collar/frame for your face. It hits at the right spot for wide legged pants, and in my opinion the neutral palette in varying shades looks fabulous here.
You can see a similar look at Ann Taylor.
Monotoned & Matchy

You might be saying, SURE, KAT — but where am I going to find matching pieces? But this is one of the trends — for example, Ann Taylor has matching floral knits below (you can also see it here), Aritzia has several options with matching pieces, and All Saints even has a lace bomber jacket.
Failing identical matching pieces, though, just go for the monotone look and match your colors.
Column of Color: Bottom & Top in Matching Colors + Contrasting Bomber Jacket

The column of color: always a trusty workwear outfit. Here it looks a bit more sporty because of the five-pocket jeans — if this won’t work for your office, swap it out for white trousers. You can also see it styled with a matching skirt and sweater tee (it’s the third picture here, or you can just see the image here).
You can also see the column of color look with this raspberry knit bomber jacket at Ann Taylor.
Wear it Like You Would a Cardigan

I mean, let’s not overcomplicate things, am I right? If you would have grabbed a cardigan in the past, this is an easy thing to grab to ward off the office A/C or the spring chill.

Why Hydrolyzed Collagen Powder Is Important for Healthy Aging and Long-Term Structural Strength
As we age, healthy aging becomes less about surface-level changes and more about maintaining strength and resilience from within. Over time, the body gradually produces fewer essential proteins that support elasticity, mobility, and tissue strength. This natural decline affects everything from skin texture and joint flexibility to bone strength and overall stability. Collagen is the […]

Mariah The Scientist Performed in DC in a Teal Green $1,478 KNWLS ‘Neo’ Coat and Custom Laura Andraschko Riding Boots
Mariah The Scientist hit the stage Saturday night at The Anthem in DC for her Hearts Sold Separately Tour, where she delivered heartfelt vocals in an incredible teal green $1,479 ‘KNWLS’ outfit.

The Atlanta native who first broke out on the scene with her EP “To Die For” in 2018 is now performing to sold out concerts with hit songs like “Burning Blue.”
For those of you who are wondering where “The Scientist” part of Mariah’s stage name comes from, in an interview with BigBoyTV she explains that she went to St John University stating, “I had a scholarship there for Biology and I dropped out in the third year, and I would like to finish.“

Staying on visual theme with her “Hearts Sold Separately” album cover that showcases her in a custom green SEKS.LLC “toy soldier” look, Mariah’s KNWLS Coat was strikingly on brand.

With structural sleeves, her leather coat featured a zipper centered and was belted at her waist. Her custom riding boots by Laura Andraschko couldn’t have been more of a perfect color match for her monochromatic ensemble.

When it came down to Mariah’s glam, her auburn hair added warmth and richness against her teal coat. Her team really thought this look through. From her matching green shadow to her bedazzle green mic, Mariah’s DC tour look was very strong and cohesive.
