Patience Series 2 to return to Channel 4 on January 7

Patience, a crime drama set in York, has announced that its set to return to our screens again at 9pm on January 7, 2026.

Based on French drama Astrid et Raphaëlle, Patience tells the story of a young woman with autism who works in the criminal records department for ‘City of York Police’ and works to solve crimes.

The trailer shares snippets of the new series with a focus on the relationship between  DI Frankie Monroe – a new detective set to replace DI Metcalfe – played by BAFTA award winner Jessica Hynes.

The second series of the show also promises “more twisted and mysterious crimes in spectacular settings” including a killer in York Minster, a murder in a monastery, and a body in the Botanical Gardens.

A spokesperson for the series said: “PATIENCE IS BACK! – Channel 4’s most popular drama of 2025 is on your screens from 7th January at 9pm with all episodes available to stream! Catch up with Patience and the team as they solve more intriguing crimes across York!”

The first series, which premiered on January 8 of this year, was the biggest drama of the year for Channel 4 – averaging 4.2 million viewers per episode – and received critical acclaim in the US when it was aired by PBS.

The cast returned to York this June to film the second series – filming all over the city for ten days, including a story set in and around York Minster.

Having filmed their last season during a rainy and cold April, the crew said that their return to the city during the summer had given them a new appreciation for York in the sun.

Ella Maisy Purvis, playing the titular character, enthused about how the sunny weather complemented the new season’s feel, describing York as a “gorgeous city”.

She said: “I also think the show has a different feel, so the weather just suits it a lot better.

“It’s funny – there’s a lot of shots where I just need to look and walk and stare and take things in and there’s no acting required there. Patience has lived here all her life, but it’s just so easy, like today in the Minster, and it’s not hard to act that when it’s such a gorgeous city.”

Nathan Welsh, portraying the role of Jake Hunter, agreed – adding: “We film so much in Belgium that York isn’t in our minds, but you come here, and it’s like, oh okay now you see it”.
