Could Luke Riley be next?

Could Luke Riley be next?

Ask Luke Riley, and he’ll admit, “It’s been a bit of a mad camp.”

For months, Riley (9-0) has prepared for the biggest fight of his life, though the circumstances changed drastically due to elements outside his control.

“I felt a bit stuck, just a bit lost,” Riley said recently to MMA Junkie. “But I stayed in the gym. Obviously it kept me a bit sane getting there.”

Riley, 25, is the next generation of Next Generation MMA in Liverpool, England, the home of UFC stars Paddy Pimblett and Molly McCann.

To have a Dana White’s Contender Series fight scheduled for Sept. 24 was elating. To have it then canceled due to visa issues was a bitter pill to swallow.

From age nine, preparing for fights has taken priority – over school, over work, over everything.

“When people were studying for exams, I was in Thailand hitting the pads,” Riley laughed. “I’d come back and the teachers would be like, ‘Luke, what the f*ck? Where have you been?’ I’d like, ‘I’ve just in Thailand. I’ve just been fighting in Thailand.’ They’d say, ‘Oh, you can’t do that, Luke.’ My mom was on my side. They knew fighting came first. It wasn’t school and then fighting, for me. It was fighting and then school.

“Fighting is No. 1, and it always has been. … I know people say there’s a lot more to life, but this moment in my life from since I’ve very first started fighting, it’s been a promise; it’s the first thing that comes first, before anything in my life.”

Riley is confident the issue will be resolved before the UFC circles back, so waiting on the shelf was an option – but it was not a remedy. Riley elected to compete again and will headline Cage Warriors 178 vs. Alexandre Junior (6-2) on Saturday in Manchester, England (UFC Fight Pass).

“I spoke to Graham (Boylan) and basically said I need to get back in the cage,” Riley said. “He got me on the Manchester show and then obviously the title fight. … I’m very happy, mate. … It’s not like I’m done forever. When it comes back around, it’ll all be sorted out. That’s why I’m happy.”

Despite his age, Riley’s level-headedness is beyond his years, majorly due to the influences he’s surrounded himself with professionally.

“Paddy is one of my best mates,” Riley said. “We have a lot in common in life. We’re just two normal lads, mate. Obviously, where he is now in his career, it’s inspiring. Sh*t, it’s more than that. He’s like an older brother, someone to look up to. I love to be in the gym with him.”

Being “Paddy’s guy” comes with a lot of attention. Whether it’s good or bad, it’s an extra angle of the fight game many youngsters don’t have to deal with. Riley, however, takes it all in stride. Seeing how Pimblett embraced it all made it easier for Riley to do the same.

“Obviously, all the Paddy haters are going to jump on whoever he’s going to mention,” Riley said. “He recently turned all the haters back around to fans again. I think that’s how fickle the MMA fans are. It’s just one of them, mate. You can’t stress over people on Twitter or Instagram or you’re not much of a fighter, are you? … He’s on a much larger scale than me. But even the likes of him, who has never lost, he’s still got haters. I’ve got to take it in stride and not bother me and just carry on going, mate. Back on.”

Like Pimblett, the confidence oozes from Riley, who dreams big and sounds so convincing he’s going to do everything to make them reality.

Even with knowledge the UFC is already interested, Riley aims to exceed the wildest expectations. Perhaps there’s a way he can convince the promotion to sign him, even knowing his travel abilities will be limited (at least for now).

“A lot of built-up f*cking… I don’t even know what the word would be. It’s not even anger. It’s built-up emotion,” Riley said. “I’m just looking to put a statement on, mate, basically. I want to make a statement to the UFC. I feel like I’m on the radar already. But after the performance I’m going to put on, they’re going to be like, ‘F*cking hell. Let’s sign this kid. I don’t know what we were thinking putting him on the Contender. This Luke, we need to sign him ASAP.’ That’s the type of performance I’m looking to put on.”

Whether it’s tomorrow, next month, or next year, Riley is confident he’ll live out his UFC dream one day. He’s in this to be the best and with an unblemished record, no one has thrown him off that path.

“Today, I could step in the octagon against anyone in the 145-pound division and win,” Riley said. “Mate, I’m willing to f*cking fight anyone. I believe I would beat anyone. I wouldn’t be in this sport to be f*cking having a 9-5.

“… If I was older and I was 35 instead of 25, I’d be honest. You’d see in interviews me saying, ‘He needs to hurry up.’ … There’s only one person you’re racing and that’s yourself. I’m a young kid, so I’ve got a lot of time. So no stress. Let’s see what happens after this one after I knock this kid out.”

Nottingham Forest: Evangelos Marinakis: wants 50,000-seat City Ground

Nottingham Forest: Evangelos Marinakis: wants 50,000-seat City Ground

Nottingham Forest are hoping to one day turn the City Ground into a 50,000-seat stadium, says Reds owner Evangelos Marinakis.

The expansion would go beyond Forest’s existing plans to increase the ground’s capacity from about 30,000 to 42,000 through the rebuilding of the Peter Taylor Stand and extension of the Bridgford Stand.

Those plans and Forest’s future on the banks of the River Trent were in jeopardy when negotiations between Nottingham City Council – which owns the land where the stadium stands – and the club collapsed over increased rent demands earlier this year.

A deal to sell the land to the Premier League club, which was agreed in July, appears to have secured the Reds’ future at their home for 126 years.

“What we need to do is have a bigger stadium,” Marinakis told BBC East Midlands Today.

“We have a lot of supporters and a huge waiting list for season tickets and I’m sure a 50,000-seat stadium will be full watching our team and our passion.”

UFC 308 poster released featuring Ilia Topuria vs. Max Holloway title clash, return of Khamzat Chimaev

Ilia Topuria faces off with a legend this October.

The official fight poster has been released for UFC 308, which takes place Oct. 26 in Abu Dhabi. In the main event, Topuria puts his featherweight title on the line for the first time when he defends against “BMF” champion Max Holloway.

Holloway, a former featherweight titleholder, added the BMF belt to his collection at UFC 300 after flattening fellow fan favorite Justin Gaethje. He has won three straight fights since losing a trilogy bout to Volkanovski.

In the UFC 308 co-main event, former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker takes on the undefeated Khamzat Chimaev. Whittaker aims for another shot at gold, while Chimaev looks to cement himself as the No. 1 contender despite fighting just four times in the past three years.

Inter Milan vs AC Milan, Harry Kane hunts another record and 100% records across European leagues

Inter Milan vs AC Milan, Harry Kane hunts another record and 100% records across European leagues

The Derby della Madonnina is the pick of the weekend’s action as Inter host stuttering rivals AC Milan at a sold-out San Siro on Sunday – and it is a match that could have big consequences.

New Milan boss Paulo Fonseca has won just one of his first four Serie A games – a 4-0 thumping of bottom-placed Venezia last week – and is coming under increasing scrutiny in the Italian press.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reported, external the relationship between Fonseca and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who was brought back to the club as a senior advisor in December, is “delicate”.

It comes from a mixture of underwhelming early results, including the Champions League defeat by Liverpool on Tuesday, and Ibrahimovic’s comments in the press.

“I am the boss and I am in charge, all the others work for me,” Ibrahimovic told Sky Sports Italia, external earlier this week.

But Italian football expert James Horncastle told BBC Euro Leagues podcast, external that many people are unsure exactly what Ibrahimovic’s role at the club is.

“He’s not employed by the club, he’s employed by the owner and that’s across RedBird Capital Partners’ media and entertainment businesses,” said Horncastle.

“But Zlatan only seems to be interested in AC Milan, and living in Milan, showing up at training and unveiling players they’ve signed.

“Are you the CEO? A sporting director? A technical director? What decisions do you make and what responsibilities do you have? If you tell us, we can judge you.

“It’s difficult for Paulo Fonseca to be given time and patience by the fans and by the media – people look at the club and there are all these ambiguities. People look at the club and say ‘who’s calling the shots here?’ And ‘should we trust them?’

“It makes Paulo Fonseca’s job all that harder when you don’t know exactly how the club is run.”

Milan sit 10th but are just three points behind third-placed Inter, who have won two and drawn two of their opening four games and head into the derby on the back of an encouraging goalless draw with Manchester City.

“It will be a derby. We all know what it means for the club and our fans,” said Inter boss Simone Inzaghi. “We’ll face a team of great value.”

Before that, Antonio Conte has the chance to take his Napoli side top of the table on Saturday when they visit Juventus, where Conte won five Serie A titles as a player and another three as manager.

Napoli are eyeing a fourth successive win, following their opening-day defeat at Hellas Verona, and have Romelu Lukaku on form with two goals and two assists in just two games since completing a move from Chelsea before deadline day.

However, it is Udinese who are the surprise Serie A leaders after four games, having narrowly avoided relegation last season.

On Sunday they visit Roma, who on Wednesday made Daniele de Rossi the first managerial casualty in the Italian top flight this season after failing to win any of the club’s opening four league games.

Belal Muhammad Day declared in UFC champion’s hometown of Chicago

Belal Muhammad will forever be remembered by the city he calls home.

The recently crowned UFC welterweight champion was honored by the city of Chicago, where the fighter was born and raised, at a ceremony on Friday at Harold Washington Library Center. Mayor Brandon Johnson proudly declared Sept. 20 to be Belal Muhammad Day, two months after “Remember The Name” defeated Leon Edwards in the main event of UFC 304 to earn his world title.

Muhammad shared a friend’s video of the ceremony on his Instagram Stories. Watch the footage below (re-uploaded by Championship Rounds).

“We do hereby proclaim Sept. 20, 2024, Belal Muhammad Day,” Johnson said.

Muhammad also uploaded a photos from the occasion to his social media.

It’s been a long road to prominence for the 36-year-old Muhammad, who had to go on a 10-fight unbeaten streak before earning his shot at UFC gold. Muhammad scored notable wins over top-10 contenders, including Gilbert Burns, Sean Brady, Vicente Luque, Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson, and Demian Maia before finally being granted a crack at Edwards this past July.

The new champion is yet to book his first title defense, though he has no shortage of challengers. Undefeated Kazakh fighter Shavkat Rakhmonov and former champion Kamaru Usman have made their case to be chosen for the opportunity, while others like Brady, Jack Della Maddalena, and Ian Machado Garry are also jockeying for position in the intriguing welterweight division.
