Shaun Murphy established a 6-2 lead over world champion Kyren Wilson as he dominated the opening session of the Masters final at Alexandra Palace.
A break of 94 in the opening frame set the tone for Murphy, who compiled a 147 maximum break in his semi-final victory over Mark Allen.
Murphy, who has not won the tournament since 2015, took the second frame and then pinched the fourth with a clearance of 65 to lead 3-1 at the mid-session interval.
Wilson, who was defeated by Allen in the 2018 final, looked a shadow of the player that advanced past Judd Trump on Saturday.
He briefly rallied to take the sixth frame with a half-century break to get back to 4-2.
However, Murphy underlined his superiority with back-to-back century breaks to head into Sunday’s concluding session (19:00 GMT) with a healthy advantage.
The player to triumph in the second Triple Crown event of the season will take home the Paul Hunter Trophy and a £350,000 first prize.
