Building a Short Depth Hot-Swap Home Server - Logic Case SC-43400-8HS

In this video I build myself a new home server. I’ve been wanting to do this for a while however I wanted to have hot swap drive bays yet needed a case short depth enough to fit in my limited depth rack. In the end I settled on the Logic Case SC-43400-8HS case which was generously provided by Server Case UK which is a 400mm deep 4U case with 8 hot swap drive bays.

Logic Case SC-43400-8HS: https://www.servercase.co.uk/shop/server-cases/rackmount/4u-chassis/4u-short-storage-chassis-w-8x-35-sata-hot-swap-bays—eatx-motherboard-support-sc-43400-8hs/

Specs:
– Intel Xeon E3-1226 v3
– 16gb DDR3 Unregistered ECC RAM (2x 8gb)
– ASUS P9D-C/4L Motherboard
– 4x 4tb HGST Ultrastar 7200rpm HDD
– Dell PERC H310 flashed to LSI 9211-8i
– 60gb Corsair Force LS SSD (FreeNAS Boot)
– FSP 300w PSU

Great video as always. You reckon you could fit a radiator in the front of you wanted to run an AIO cooling solution? Or a stand alone radiator with a custom loop?

Server case, server MOBO, server drives (SAS), you were not joking around. Kudos. What is the power consumption?

Question: why use a raid card when the software raid is pretty good within FreeNAS aka True as.

29:30 Uh, are you missing a VRM heatsink? Looks like there's an unpopulated heatsink footprint between the case fans and CPU socket in this frame.
I also love me some reflashed PERC h210/h310s, good stuff. I was relieved to find out that it isn't actually the end of the world if you forget to write down the SAS ID. 🙂

I have built several home servers you always think you have a big enough case but you soon run out of room. My personal favourite case is the Thermaltake v21 case.

Fantastic video! Would you recommend us to copy your build exactly, or, would you instead recommend a change now that you've experienced it for yourself? I'm looking to build a file server which can handle some self-hosted services.

If you would rebuild this Short Dept Hot-Swap Home Server today, what components would you choose in 2021?
I'm especially interested in the Case, the CPU (brand/model and socket), the Motherboard, the Memory and the Disk Controller?
What hardware would you prefer today?
Would you use another OS today compared to back in 2019?

You should cut out the original fan grills in the rear with a dremel and add wire ones, makes a massive difference in noise (Did in on the side of an Antec Fusion with Noctua fans)

Thank you for posting, I’m in the same position of wanting a new storage solution that fits into my limited size rack.

After 3 years use, how is it holding up and when idle how much is it pulling watts wise?

    October 23, 2024 at 1:52 pm

Do you know if the drive backplanes actually support SAS drives or whether it's just a SATA connection?

Do you need a rail, a tray or something when installing the short case into the rack?

Great video and I am looking into build one as well, which this video helped a lot. Just wondering if you could advise what mount have you used on the SSD to the side of case please? I need something similar as an additional internal HDD space. Thank you!

    October 23, 2024 at 1:52 pm

Nicely done. I am running a network rack in the top of my office closet. It's depth has made a home serve build tricky. The case I have now has too many compromises. This one may work perfectly.

    October 23, 2024 at 1:52 pm

"we'll see how well these fans do" then immediately replaced them with noctua fans without testing. Pretty much always the right move

  22. @GamingDaveUK

    October 23, 2024 at 1:52 pm

Watched the video, as I kind of want to build a server pc and move my gaming pc into a more rack mounted case.

I got heat issues when running 6 HDDs and 2 SDD. Does that also happen to others?

Defining a Server
A server provides services to other computers on a network. A server can be an expensive Windows 2008 Server, or a simple Windows XP Home computer with a shared printer.
Operating System
Server Operating Systems are more stable and secure then Desktop operating Systems
Server Operating Systems and their Software are generally much more expensive then Desktop counterparts
Server Operating Systems are generally not as easy to administer as Desktop Operating Systems
Hardware
A Server can use ANY hardware to operate, but Server Hardware is made to be more reliable then desktop hardware.
Xeon Processors are standard processors used in servers
Redundant Power Supply allow one power Supply to Fail while the Server is Still Running
RAID — Allows for a Hard Drive to fail without crashing the Server
ECC RAM is RAM that does a self test. It is more stable then regular RAM, but much more expensive.
Types of Servers
Software features — multiple features can be on one box
Security and Authentication gives access to network resources
Print Servers share printers on a network
File Servers share files on a network
Web/ FTP Servers provide websites on a network
Mail Servers provide email routing for an organization
Database Servers store data for outside applications
Remote Access Servers allow Internet users to access the internal network. Usually a VPN connection.
Final Thoughts…
Buy what you need… Many people buy a $5000 server when all they need is a Dell bargain bin system. .
