The Game of Thrones spin off will return for a fourth series
The future of House of the Dragon has been confirmed by the show’s bosses, with a new release window announced.
The HBO fantasy series, set approximately 200 years before Game of Thrones and centred on the Targaryen family and their internal conflicts and wars, gained immense popularity after its initial release in 2022. Fans have been eagerly awaiting season 2, which is due to air in 2024.
Viewers are now keenly anticipating the release of season 3 following a significant cliffhanger, but they will have to wait until 2026 for the next instalment.
However, it was announced today that House of the Dragon will indeed be renewed for a fourth season, although viewers will have to endure another lengthy wait, reports the Mirror.
Season 4 is slated for release in 2028, meaning fans will have to wait another two years. The Game of Thrones account teased fans on X, stating: “One Realm. New Stories. Every Year.”
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, set a century before Game of Thrones, will make its debut in January 2026, followed by the third season of House of the Dragon in the summer.
The second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will then be released in 2027, followed by the fourth season of House of the Dragon in 2028.
Fans have shared their reactions to the timeline announcement on social media, with one person writing on X: “can’t wait to see what’s next! !”.
Another said: “This Is Great News.” Over on Instagram, one fan wrote: “Yassss finally! We’ve only been waiting like forever!”.
Another added: “I’m going to be the old lady on the Titanic by the time this is over..”

It was previously reported that fans expressed disappointment with the conclusion of series 2, which ran for eight episodes. Viewers will recall Rhaenyra attempting to broker an agreement with Alicent in a bid to bring the war to an end.
With series 3 still several months away, it has been confirmed that series 4 will mark the final instalment of the programme. However, until now, a specific date had not been announced.
Despite a release in 2028, a precise release date has yet to be confirmed, but based on the pattern of previous series, audiences can anticipate it arriving around summertime.
