York office building could be converted into church

Plans lodged with City of York Council would see the Saville Group offices in Millfield Lane, Nether Poppleton converted to house the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Hope Centre Church.

The application stated the church would host a congregation of about 130 worshippers at peak times on Sunday mornings.

It added measures would be taken to ensure neighbours are not disturbed by the noise from services.

The RCCG Hope Centre Church, a Pentecostal denomination, has branches in York and Crewe.

Plans stated the church would be in an area of mainly commercial and industrial buildings.

It is opposite Manor CE Academy secondary school.

The church would be used for prayer meetings, worship, community gatherings, educational and pastoral activities and administrative functions, with office space provided for staff.

A total of 30 onsite parking spaces, including two disabled bays, would cater for around 25 vehicles expected to travel to and from its services.

A further 20 on-street spaces are also available nearby.

Plans stated doors and windows would remain closed during services so amplified noise could not be heard by the building’s neighbours.

The application said: “The proposed place of worship will be operated in a responsible manner so as to protect the amenity of neighbouring occupiers and avoid noise disturbance.

“No external public address system, loudspeaker, amplified music, musical performance or congregation activity is proposed.”

It was the models who nearly stole the show at the Venice Film Festival tonight, as Kendall Jenner graced the Wild Horse Nine premiere in a showstopping look.

The fashion star, 30, swapped a more modern piece for a timeless 90s gown as she made an early arrival on the red carpet.

Kendall proudly showed off her model physique in the dress from Giorgio Armani’s 1995 collection as she paused to sign autographs for her fans.

The fashion star, who is an ambassador for Armani Beauty at the festival, teamed her outfit with diamonds from Briony Raymond.

Like many models, she made the most of her appearance at the festival, despite not having a role in the Martin McDonagh film, and was joined by fellow fashion favourite Stella Maxwell, who opted for a revealing black lace gown.

Wild Horse Nine stars Parker Posey, John Malkovich, Sam Rockwell and Steve Buscemi, and marks Martin’s return to directing for the first time since his acclaimed 2022 film The Banshees of Inisherin earned a string of Oscar nominations.

The film is set in 1973, shortly before the Chilean coup, and sees CIA officers Chris and Lee dispatched from Santiago to Easter Island by their bureau chief, MJ.

Amongst the Island’s iconic statues, and as the longtime partners wrestle with their dark pasts and present conspiracies, Chris’s newfound bond with a pair of rebellious students threatens to send everyone’s trip to this remote paradise sideways.

The film is set to compete for the coveted Golden Lion Award, and will be released theatrically on November 6.

While Kendall is expected at a number of Armani events in the coming days, she is unlikely to be joined by her new beau Jacob Elordi.

The Wuthering Heights actor attended last year’s Venice Film Festival to promote his movie Frankenstein, but isn’t expected at this year’s event.

Jacob has been enjoying a break from the big screen after a hectic year, with the release of his Oscar-nominated role in Frankenstein and the Wuthering Heights blockbuster.

In his downtime, Jacob has been seeing Kendall in London, Hollywood and Australia.

It’s been reported that Jacob booked the $82,000-a-night penthouse suite at famous London hotel Claridge’s for himself and his girlfriend in a bid to impress her.

An insider exclusively told the Daily Mail they had been dating ‘as far back as early February’ thanks to a spot of matchmaking from Kendall’s sister Kylie.

At that stage, Kylie’s boyfriend Timothée Chalamet was running a best actor Oscar campaign for his turn as an underground ping pong champion in Marty Supreme.

Meanwhile, Jacob was also nominated for a string of awards for his role as the monster in Guillermo Del Toro’s adaptation of Frankenstein.

‘Kylie is the alpha sister and pushed Kenny to start a romance with Jacob because she wanted to set up double dates with Timothée.’

The insider shared: ‘Kenny’s house is where all the parties happen, a lot of action there, so the four of them got close there,’ the source expanded, divulging that ‘Kenny found out she just clicked with Jacob… there was chemistry.’

Venice Film Festival’s red carpet events began Wednesday with the premiere of British director Danny Boyle’s Ink, a drama about the rise of media magnate Rupert Murdoch.

It closes on September 12, with Italian costume drama Dio Ride (God Laughs), written and directed by Giovanni Veronesi.

Debris was strewn across the busy junction after the smash, which saw three cars damaged. The road was closed while emergency services helped the remaining drivers and passengers.

Southport Road was closed between Burnie Avenue and Wolfenden Avenue following the crash at around 5.30pm today. Photographs taken at the scene showed one car positioned sideways across the road, badly damaged with its front bumper and bonnet smashed. A second vehicle could be seen parked at the side of the road nearby.

A Merseyside Fire and Rescue spokesman said that the occupants of two of the cars involved in the crash remained at the scene and were unhurt, but the occupants of a third vehicle had fled, Liverpool Echo reports.

Corrie fans think they’ve spotted a new romance for Ryan Connor after crying out for him to get his own storyline

Coronation Street fans think they have spotted a new romance for Ryan Connor after crying out for him to get his own storyline in the long-running show.

Actor Ryan Prescott is best known for playing the character in the ITV soap, which is filmed in Salford, having started in the role back in 2018.

He was recast in the role, which had previously been played by two other actors, when his character’s job in Ibiza fell through, and he moved back in with his mum, Michelle, played by Kym Marsh.

The rest, as they say, is history, and it was this week that Ryan’s reappearance in Corrie following a recent absence, which got viewers talking, with many making reference to soap star Ryan’s recent holiday with his cobbles castmates.

And he has since got Corrie fans talking again, this time following Thursday’s (September 3) episode of the show. Ryan was seen heading to the salon, where he overheard Bethany Platt arranging a date with Roman, after the disaster that was their first attempt at enjoying dinner together.

Ryan appeared to show his own interest in Bethany, according to viewers, suggesting the new man would ‘be an idiot’ if he decided she wasn’t for him due to what is happening in her personal life, namely her mum, Sarah Platt, being in prison for Theo Silverton’s murder.

As they briefly spoke, before Ryan requested a manicure after a guest at the hotel told him he had “terrible nails”, Corrie fans were quick to spot a spark between the pair, and as they called for a romance, some were concerned that Bethany could end up in the arms of someone else.

@DrSwarla2025 said: “Looks like Corrie are going to revisit Ryan and Bethany’s obvious attraction I’m all for it. #corrie.” @daisysmidgeley wrote: “Yeah they’re SO getting back together this was so buzzy.” @sam_Fletcher78 replied: “Sparkes were certainly flying!” @KerriVibe_ posted: “Bethany & Ryan… are we shipping them again?”

@swarlaera2 suggested: “Are they setting this up to look like they could have a relationship then bam she ends up with kit.” @SwainsCoat added: “No me getting excited over the prospect of Ryan and Bethany just for her to be dumb and choose her mother’s awful ex.”

Memorial unveiled to Welsh man who died in tragic crash

Published

on

Wales Online

The family of Andrew David Kenneth Young previously said it brings them comfort that ‘his final moments were in pursuit of the hobby which gave him so much happiness.’

A memorial has been unveiled for the victims of a derailment in Lisbon a year on from the tragedy. Three Brits were killed in the crash, including Welsh pensioner and transport enthusiast Andrew David Kenneth Young, known as Dave.

A total of 16 people were killed when a funicular derailed in the Portuguese capital on September 3, 2025. The famous Gloria funicular, a popular tourist attraction which sees a streetcar travel up and down a steep hill in tandem with a second car, derailed and crashed into a building during the incident.

Following his death, the family of 82-year-old Mr Young, who lived in Holyhead, described him as a “lifelong transport enthusiast” who enjoyed spending his retirement “visiting heritage railways and tramways around the world.”

On the year anniversary of the tragic crash, a memorial to the victims was unveiled in Lisbon.

Near the crash site, a 150-year-old olive tree stands at the centre of a ring of limestone blocks laid into the ground featuring the names of the victims.

Along with Mr Young, the other Britons killed in the crash were theatre director Kayleigh Smith and her partner Will Nelson, a lecturer at Manchester’s Arden School of Theatre.

Foreign ambassadors laid wreaths and the Patriarch of Lisbon, a senior Catholic church official, offered a blessing at the memorial.

The accident was one of the Portuguese capital’s worst tragedies in recent memory and cast a shadow over the city’s ongoing tourism boom.

Service on the Gloria funicular remains halted while the official investigation remains ongoing. Two other city funiculars also remain out of service during inspections. The regular streetcars that rumble through the city’s streets are running as usual.

The anniversary brought renewed attention to delays in identifying the causes of the crash, which also injured 24 people, and attributing any blame.

Carris, the Portuguese company that runs the city’s road transport, said on Wednesday it plans to open an international tender in the first quarter of next year for the affected funicular to be modernised, with the goal of it returning to service by 2029.

Portugal’s public prosecutor’s office said it hoped to publish a final report by March regarding the accident’s causes and whether there is any criminal liability.

Families of the victims complained in a letter obtained by public broadcaster RTP about “a year of silence” from authorities. They had been kept in the dark about the investigation, receiving no contact from officials, they said, according to RTP.

A preliminary report into the accident published last year said that the failure of a steel safety cable and maintenance flaws contributed to the crash.

The streetcar hurtled down the hill before coming off the rails on a bend and smashing into a building, leaving the wooden cabin a crumpled wreck.

Lindsay Clancy wheeled up to judge's bench in extraordinary court moment as she waits for verdict: Live updates

Lindsay Clancy was wheeled to the judge bench by her defense lawyer on Thursday afternoon as she awaits her fate in her murder trial.

The jury has now been deliberating for 35 hours without reaching a verdict. Jurors were called into the courtroom one at a time, questioned by the judge, and then excused.

The deadlocked jury, made up of nine women and three men, were issued the controversial Tuey-Rodriguez instruction after they told Judge William Sullivan that they were unable to come to a unanimous decision for a second time yesterday.

The instruction, known as the ‘dynamite charge,’ is issued as a firm legal push to get the jury to resolve their differences.

The panel of 12 have now deliberated for 34 and a half hours. If the jury is unable to reach a verdict, the judge will eventually be forced to declare a mistrial.

The jury must decide whether Clancy is guilty of three murder counts after the former labor and delivery nurse killed her children Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, eight months, using exercise bands at her home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, in January 2023.

Clancy has pleaded not guilty in her case, citing postpartum depression, psychosis and overmedication by prescribers. Prosecutors acknowledged that Clancy was mentally ill, but maintain that she knew what she was doing at the time of the killings.

Lindsay Clancy’s life locked in psych ward

Lindsay Clancy’s quaint Summer Street home was supposed to be the setting for her family’s happily ever after.

It was where she and her husband Patrick chose to raise their three children: Cora, five, Dawson, three, and baby Callan.

But for the past three years, that picture-perfect suburban setting has been shattered and replaced by the clinical corridors at Tewksbury State Hospital.

Patrick has never spoken out about the baseless rumors, but as Lindsay’s case comes to a close, his attorney has threatened those sharing the ‘false, defamatory statements.’

Patrick and Lindsay Clancy are suing her medical providers

Both Patrick and Lindsay Clancy have filed separate lawsuits against several of her medical providers alleging that they overmedicated the mom while treating her for postpartum mental health issues.

This overmedication led to her conditions worsening, and ultimately to the deaths of the children, the suits claim.

Many of the providers they are suing took the stand during her murder trial, including Dr Jennifer Tufts and Nurse Rebecca Jollotta.

Fifa accuses Uefa of ‘smear campaign’ against Gianni Infantino

Published

on

Gianni Infantino holding the World Cup trophy

It also claimed that Uefa’s “economic motivation” was to prevent smaller countries from having the “financial strength to compete with the European elite”.

“If soccer is strengthened in the developing world, global competition increases, which ultimately reduces Uefa’s market power and provides more competition for its flagship tournaments,” Fifa said.

“By raising funds to allow some of Fifa’s smaller member associations to better develop soccer, FFE would lead to more players from those nations choosing to represent their countries of origin and playing in their home leagues rather than playing abroad.”

Uefa has declined to comment, although BBC Sport has been told insiders believe that if Fifa has nothing to hide, it should disclose the documents and speed up the legal process. It has led the rebellion against the Fifa president, who is facing calls to stand down from three confederations.

Uefa has also asked a court in New York to approve a legal document ordering testimony and documents from venture capitalist Joshua Kushner, the brother of US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, who was set to be the lead investor in FFE, and his company Thrive Eternal.

Thrive had held talks with Infantino about heading up a $4.2bn (£3.1bn) investment in 20% of a new Fifa commercial subsidiary, before the idea was abandoned days after it was revealed in July amid a huge backlash.

At the time, Fifa claimed FFE would have increased the funding distributed to each national association for the 2027-2030 cycle from £5.9m to £14.7m.

On Sunday, Kushner expressed regret over FFE, saying: “While we stand behind the motivations of FFE, we failed to appreciate the political dynamics of global football, and the lengths some would go to… had we known what this would devolve into, we would not have gotten involved.”

Uefa has also asked for the disclosure of documents from American financier Greg Maffei, who was a key adviser on the deal.

While Uefa says neither Kushner nor Maffei are anticipated defendants in any legal proceedings, it claims the pair first discussed the FFE concept in July 2025 and that Infantino had “been discussing the underlying concept with Kushner for nearly a year before the terms sheet was ultimately signed”.

Its lawyers also argue the World Cup was deliberately undervalued at about £15bn, which it says is “a figure that was neither the product of an open, competitive auction, nor tested by any independent valuer”. Uefa claims Infantino failed to consult Fifa’s hierarchy over the plan.

Restaurant owner shocked as council staff come to install bike rack in front of outdoor tables

Mill Road traders came to show their support after the plans put Tradizioni’s outdoor dining at risk

A restaurant owner was left in shock after council officers came to install a bike rack in front of their outdoor seating. Andrea Scaramuccia, co-founder and general manager of Tradizioni on Mill Road, said officers came on Wednesday (September 2) to mark up the location.

The 51-year-old said: “I came out to ask what’s going on and they said they were installing bike racks – but I told them I have tables here. When I said can it be stopped, they said it’s too late – we’re coming tomorrow to install it.”

He posted on Facebook saying that the restaurant would have to give up their outdoor dining if the plans were to go ahead, receiving an outpouring of public support. He said: “In summer it’s 60 per cent of my business – I have a small restaurant but I can double my seats in summer.”

Councillor Alex Beckett, chair of Cambridgeshire County Council’s highways and transport committee, said the plan for bike racks was originally agreed in 2023 – but they were able to stop it being put in place.

The Lib Dem councillor said it was part of a Local Highways Improvement bid which hadn’t taken into account Mill Road’s outdoor dining scene.

He said: “Yesterday they came to mark it up and that’s when they realised it’s an issue – but we were able to cancel it fully.” He said he had spoken to Mill Road business owners about alternative sites after they came out to show their support.

He said: “The community came together which was really nice, being moved to defend the spot – it’s really nice that Mill Road came together.”

Mr Scaramuccia said: “A bad day became a day of joy because all these people came together and thousands of people expressed their support, so it’s been very great.

“I have to say sometimes we always blame politicians, but in this case they have been very responsible and fixed things.”
