Paralympics 2024: Ukraine's preparations amid war

Other athletes have found their own ways to contribute to the war effort. Wheelchair fencer Andrii Demchuk crossed the border to Poland with his wife and two children after the invasion.

After settling his family in Warsaw, he began helping other Ukrainian refugees. He ferried them from the border to the Polish capital, before returning with tents, sleeping bags and equipment for the Ukrainian army.

He also delivered jeeps to the border – albeit in unconventional style. As a leg amputee, Demchuk normally drives an automatic. The jeeps were manual.

“It was a bit of a problem because I don’t have a leg to push the clutch,” he says.

So – ingeniously – he used his fencing sword instead. “A broken rapier can push the clutch perfectly,” he explains, demonstrating his technique with an imaginary sword.

“I delivered seven jeeps this way.”

Together with two Polish fencing friends, Grzegorz Pluta and Stefan Makowski, he also began visiting local schools.

“We realised we needed to bring Polish and Ukrainian children together,” Demchuk says.

“The Ukrainian kids were traumatised – and there were some differences.”

They visited around 40 schools – and talked to about 10,000 children.

“We wanted to show the kids how sport can take your mind off your problems and that people who are disabled don’t give up and can still break barriers.”

At this point, Demchuk realised that if he didn’t return to training, he wouldn’t qualify for the Paralympics, so Pluta and Makowski invited him to train at their club in Warsaw.

Most of Ukraine’s Para-fencers are in similar circumstances, having had to leave their homeland. Demchuk trained one of his team-mates – Nadiia Doloh – after her coach was unable to follow her to Poland.

Despite the disruption, Ukraine’s Para-fencing team finished top of the medal table at this year’s European Championships.

Elisandra Ferreira win vacant atomweight title

Elisandra Ferreira is the new Invicta atomweight champion.

Invicta FC 57 took place Friday at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kan., featuring a championship bout for the vacant atomweight title. Elisandra Ferreira took Andressa Romero in a hard-fought battle over 25 minutes. After the dust settled, Ferreira was crowned the new Invicta atomweight champion by unanimous decision (48-47, 48-47, 49-46).

The fight was intense.

Ferreira set the tone early in the opening round by clipping Romero with punches. However, as the fight went on, things evened out. Romero quickly rebounded to win Round 2, tying up the fight on all three judges’ scorecards.

The fight became an all-out scrap between two fighters hungry to claim the vacant title. Both had moments on the feet and in the grappling department, but often, the pair just slugged it out as they stood toe-to-toe.

The judges scored the fight unanimously in Ferreira’s favor, crowning the 26-year-old Brazilian the new champion.

Injury ends Invicta FC 57 co-feature early

The co-main event ended abruptly in an unfortunate fashion.

Nayara Maia took on Kristina Williams in a flyweight bout, but the fight was over before the fighters got into their rhythm. Unfortunately for Maia (7-2-1), who was sporting knee braces on both legs, she could not continue after her right knee gave out while charging forward with punches. As a result, Williams (8-4) earned a TKO victory in just 31 seconds.

Salvatore 'Toto' Schillaci scores for Italy v Uruguay at 1990 World Cup

Ian Murray says Raith Rovers sacking 'still doesn't make sense'

Murray explained he told Rovers chief executive Andrew Barrowman he was “not going to sit here and beg for my job”.

“I felt I had enough credit in the bank to at least have had a conversation before a decision was made where we could maybe sit down around a table, shake hands even and walk away,” he added.

“But to do it over the phone I felt wasn’t right. You obviously try and evaluate the reasons that they gave, which still don’t make any sense to me.”

Murray has been one of the names linked with the vacant St Johnstone job following the sacking of Craig Levein.

“I’m like any manager, I am open to any offer,” Murray said.

“It’s sad when someone loses their job but that’s the nature of the business that we are in. Unfortunately, you are always waiting for someone to leave and you might have an opportunity.

“There will be more when the domino effect kicks in, which I probably started this season. You have to be ready and I am ready. I didn’t need a rest. I’ve had my rest in the summer, so it wasn’t like I needed to recharge my batteries.

“I have got a lot coming up in the next couple of weeks, which is really, really good – all football related – so I’m really looking forward to all of that. But if a job comes up before that then fantastic.”

Meanwhile, Falkirk manager John McGlynn said “it’s a compliment for all the good work that’s been getting done” to also be linked with St Johnstone after his side’s 43-game unbeaten league run took his side to the League 1 title and an early lead in the Championship.

“I think myself and [assistant] Paul Smith did a really good job at Raith Rovers to get them out of League 1 and then finish third in our first season in the Championship, in a league that contained Hearts and Dundee, and then fifth in our last season,” he said.

“And we’ve come in here and, within two and a bit seasons, we are where we are now. It’s nice to be linked with it, but I’m very comfortable and very happy where I am.”
