Everything you need to know about UK’s first Universal Studios theme park
- The UK government has formally approved the planning application for the first-ever Universal Studios theme park in Britain. This decision marks a major milestone for the project which has been under discussion since early 2024.
- Permission was granted via a Special Development Order to allow the government to approve the significant project. This process bypasses standard local planning protocols to speed up the development timeline for the site.
- The resort will be built at a former brickworks at Kempston Hardwick in Bedfordshire. The location was chosen for its proximity to major transport hubs like London Luton Airport.
- The project is expected to provide a £50 billion boost to the British economy over the coming decades. Local leaders believe the development will be transformational for the region and the national economy.
- Construction of the resort is expected to create 20,000 jobs followed by 8,000 permanent roles once the gates open. Universal has committed to a goal of hiring roughly 80% of its workforce from the local surrounding communities.
- Infrastructure improvements include a new railway station at Stewartby and upgrades to the existing Wixams station. New road links will also be built to manage the volume of traffic expected from millions of annual visitors.
- Planning documents suggest the park could feature the tallest rides in Europe to compete with global destinations. Some proposed structures may reach heights of up to 115 meters according to the current design specifications.
- Construction is expected to begin as early as next year with a target opening date set for 2031. The project must still complete a final statutory parliamentary review period before ground is broken.
