Sainsbury’s stops selling ‘transphobic’ Grinch Christmas card
Supermarket chain Sainsbury’s has been criticised after selling the card, which shows a picture of the Grinch and reads: “This Christmas, I’m identifying as a Grinch.”
Trans journalist Sophie Molly spotted the card and posted it on social media: “Transphobic Christmas card in my local Sainsbury’s (Berryden). Please do better Sainsbury’s.”
The card was published by Emotional Rescue.
Sainsbury’s has confirmed the cards will be removed from its shelves, with the decision to withdraw it coming from Emotional Rescue.
Despite this, Ms Molly called it a “worrying site”.
Speaking to PinkNews, Ms Molly said: “Trans people don’t choose to identify as their gender – it’s part of who they are. Being trans is not a choice.
“Cis people (a person whose gender identity matches their sex at birth) saying they identify as something like a tomato, attack helicopter or a Grinch invalidates the lived experience of trans people.
“When you consider the current UK climate of trans hostility, I feel that it’s a worrying sight.”
A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “At Sainsbury’s, we’re committed to being an inclusive retailer where people love to work and shop.
