Antoine Semenyo Agrees Personal Terms to Join Liverpool
Antoine Semenyo looks set to be the star of the January transfer window with Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur all holding an interest in the Ghana international, according to GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Ben Jacobs.
Currently, United and City are the frontrunners to sign the Bournemouth star next month, with Liverpool and Spurs not currently as active as the Manchester clubs in the race for the sought-after attacker, as per GMS sources.
Semenyo has a release clause worth £65m for the first part of the January window, meaning any potential transfer to one of the Premier League’s biggest clubs could happen early in the New Year, rather than towards the February 2nd deadline.
While Liverpool are not currently the frontrunners for his signature, other reports have suggested that the transfer is there for them to complete should they want to.
Semenyo Wants to Join Liverpool
According to GIVEMESPORT senior reporter Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have been in contact over the phone since November as they explore a potential move for Semenyo in 2026.
The Guardian report that a switch to Anfield would be the 25-year-old’s preference in January, while CaughtOffside have gone a step further and said that personal terms have already been agreed between the two parties.
Those reports would imply that if Liverpool did decide to step up their interest in the Ghanaian, they would have a good chance of being the club that secures his signature.
Semenyo is a Gakpo Upgrade
Cody Gakpo has undoubtedly been a great player for Liverpool over the past three years, with his goals helping them win the Premier League title in Arne Slot’s first season.
However, the Dutchman – like many of his senior teammates – has struggled to hit the heights of last season this time around, underwhelming in appearances for the Merseyside outfit and being described as being one-dimensional.
Of course, the 26-year-old also faces increased competition for his spot on the left wing from Florian Wirtz following his big-money summer move from Bayer Leverkusen.
While the Germany international hasn’t lived up to high expectations yet, he is showing signs of improvement with his performance in the 2-1 win against Tottenham impressive.
Liverpool Hold Talks to Sign ‘Generational Talent’ Chased by ‘Every Top Premier League Club’
Liverpool have held discussions with highly-rated Leicester City youngster Jeremy Monga.
Wirtz is versatile, but there is little doubt that Semenyo would bring a lot of quality, form and consistency to the left-wing role should he complete a switch to Anfield. He glides across the pitch and is effective at bringing his side up the pitch and putting them in dangerous positions in the final third.
Described as ‘world-class’ by Cherries teammate Justin Kluivert, the 25-year-old has come on leaps and bounds this season especially under Andoni Iraola, scoring eight goals in 16 Premier League appearances.
Earlier this season, England legend Chris Waddle labelled Semenyo the ‘best winger in England’ and it would be hard to disagree with that, given his form this season.
While he can create for his teammates, Semenyo usually puts himself in the right positions to score as well – something he can do with either foot to cause defenders nightmares.
Liverpool May Have Other Priorities
While a move for Semenyo makes sense for a number of reasons, it could come down to Liverpool’s budgets and where they need to prioritise new signings.
The Merseyside outfit’s centre-back situation in particular lacks real depth, especially with Giovanni Leoni and Joe Gomez currently on sidelines. That leaves Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate as the only two recognised senior central defenders available for Slot, which is clearly an issue.
Liverpool have a decision to make when it comes to where they could do business in January, but what is for certain is that whoever lands Semenyo from Bournemouth in the next few weeks, they will be getting a top quality player.
