Trevor Phillips Tears Into Minister Over Broken Promises
Trevor Phillips ripped into a senior member of Keir Starmer’s government today over Labour’s broken promises.
The Sky presenter asked Labour chair Anna Turley about the party’s tendency to only take tough decisions when it’s too late amid the government’s rapid decline in the polls.
He said: “Is the problem with the voters that they just haven’t noticed how lucky they’ve been? You’ve lost 14 points in the polls since the election.
“What’s gone wrong?”
The MP for Redcar said the public are “rightly” impatient for change, but it takes “time” to introduce that.
Phillips hit back: “Can I suggest an alternative reason for the voters not having noticed all this wonderfulness?
“Do we need to count the promises that you’ve made which haven’t been delivered?”
He continued: “Winter fuel allowance cut – promised but not delivered.
“No tax rises – promised but not delivered.
“Day one rights in the Employment Bill which you’ve just talked about – a promise, but no delivered.
“Trans guidance – promised but not delivered.
“I could do this all morning. But isn’t the problem here that every time you’ve been confronted with one of these difficult choices you mentioned a minute ago, you’ve run away.
“Maybe that’s the reason the voters haven’t been noticing all the wonderful things you’ve done.”
“No, not at all,” Turley replied, pointing to the increase in the number of GP appointments available.
He cut in: “My point is, you didn’t fix them. Every time you said you were going to do something, you did something else.”
“There’s a huge amount of things to be dealt with,” Turley insisted, pointing to the international challenges Labour is also grappling with.
“But we are absolutely delivering on our manifesto pledges,” she added.
According to POLITICO’s compilation of polls, Reform are currently on 29%, holding onto the steady lead they’ve enjoyed for months.
Labour trail on 18%, while the Conservatives sit on 17%, the Greens on 15% and the Lib Dems on 13%.
