Vinicius Junior was jeered by Real Madrid’s own supporters during their unconvincing 2-0 win against Sevilla on Saturday, and he’s responded with a social media post

Vinicius Junior has added to the storm at Real Madrid by posting a cryptic message on social media. Despite beating Sevilla 2-0 at home on Saturday to make it three wins in a row, manager Xabi Alonso remains under pressure and their performances have been unconvincing.

Los Blancos have thrown away a five-point lead over Barcelona at the top of the La Liga and tensions behind the scenes haven’t helped the former Bayer Leverkusen boss, who was only appointed in June. One of the biggest talking points of Alonso’s reign has been his relationship with star players like Vinicius.

During El Clasico earlier this season, the 25-year-old threw a strop after being substituted and walked straight down the tunnel. Vinicius later apologised to his team-mates, the club and president Florentin Perez, but he notably didn’t mention Alonso in his statement.

The Brazilian, who hasn’t scored since the start of October, was jeered by Real’s own supporters supporters when he came off against Sevilla. Vinicius, who captained the side, responded on Instagram, posting two photos from the match with the caption: “…” as well as changing his profile picture to one of him wearing a Brazil shirt.

Alonso was asked about the boos post-match and replied: “The fans are sovereign and free to express themselves, but it was a complicated match. I value the team’s moment and with this time off, we are going to use the moment to rest and start with enthusiasm.”

Sevilla were reduced to 10 men in the second half but still managed to trouble Real. A header from Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe’s late penalty got the job done for Alonso’s side, who don’t play again for a fortnight.

January is a big month for Real, as they’ll face rivals Atletico Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup semi-finals in Saudi Arabia before a potential final against Barcelona or Athletic Bilbao. Real will also have the chance to qualify for the Champions League knockouts.

“We are going to have some time to analyse and reflect,” Alonso continued. “It was a complicated situation. We know we can do better, and we want to start the new year better.

“The priority was to win. There are things that have not turned out as we expected. Where we came from and these victories… now it must be accompanied by an improvement.”
