Steven Gerrard will always be a hero at Liverpool and it appears the iconic midfielder has not shut the door on his former club
Steven Gerrard has thrown his support behind Arne Slot before stating he would return to Liverpool to work in any capacity.
When the former Reds skipper took charge at Aston Villa in November 2021, many believed it was only a matter of time before he would return to Anfield as manager. A challenging period at Villa was swiftly followed by an 18-month stint with Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Ettifaq, whom he departed in January.
He has yet to return to the dugout, despite being heavily linked with a sentimental comeback to Rangers, where he secured the Scottish Premiership title without dropping a point during the 2020-21 season. The 44-year-old has been undertaking considerable punditry duties during his break from management.

During a recent interview, he was questioned about whether he harbours ambitions of managing the Reds. In comments for the Liverpool Echo, Gerrard told TNT Sports ‘ ‘Ally’s Social Club:’ “I’ll be brutally, brutally honest with you. I’d help Liverpool in any department at any minute of every day. I’d help them with anything.
Nevertheless, Gerrard demonstrated his integrity by making clear he doesn’t wish for Slot, who has faced mounting pressure in recent weeks, to lose his position. The former England skipper said: “I don’t want the Arne Slot to lose his job.”
“I want him to fix this and turn it around and make Liverpool great. I was bouncing all over the city four or five months ago when Liverpool won the league.
“I’m a Liverpool fan. I want the best for Liverpool. But if Liverpool need me in any department at any time, I’ll be there for them.”
Liverpool’s fortunes have been improving recently. Their 2-1 triumph away at Tottenham marked the Reds’ third victory in five outings, a result which propelled them into fifth place, though Manchester United are yet to face Aston Villa. Gerrard reflected on his time in charge of Villa, which came to an end in October 2022 following a 3-0 loss to Fulham which left them hovering just above the drop zone.
Analysing what went awry, Gerrard said: “Going into the second season, I’m thinking: ‘We’ve taken Villa from 17th to seventh, eighth, ninth.
“‘We’re in a good place. We’ve made three or four really strong signings. Let’s go for top ten, maybe have a go at the League Cup. If Europe happens, brilliant.’
“We started the season really badly. We lost 2–0 to Bournemouth. We were poor – tactically poor, players didn’t turn up – and it was a shock result.
“We bounced back against Everton, won 1–0, steadied it a bit. But when we lost momentum towards the end of October, I didn’t feel like I could pull it back.
“I felt like I’d changed the dynamics and upset too many people in the dressing room too quickly, and that hurt me a lot.”
