Why Cybersecurity Training is a SCAM

Cyber Security should never be your first class. Learn basic system administration(A+), then networking(network+, CCNA) then maybe IT Security.

I enrolled in a bootcamp and can for sure say that I wish I had more of an understanding in networking and other basic system concepts. I think I got a lot out of it and its been a great starting point, but I am in no way ready for a cyber security job. There's a huge unethical money-grab attempt with these bootcamps. They advertise that anyone, complete beginners with no knowledge of computer systems, can take the bootcamp and get a job in whatever its geared towards, but its simply not the case. You need time, exposure and experimentation for sure. I am about to take my security + and I am ready for it, but as far as being able to implement those conecpts in a real world job… theres no way.. so ill be getting my A+ then Network+ next.

Bro is 1000% correct if you don’t have basic IT knowledge and take the security+ it’s essentially like knowing how to fix an engine but not knowing how it works a lot of people who have passed the sec+ would probably fail core 1 of the A+

I crushed my finger while hooking up a set of doubles. While I was healing, I knew I needed a change of careers. I was sick of the trucking industry; the foolish drivers, D.O.T. requirements, road deaths. I went through a cybersecurity bootcamp and learned linux, windows fundamentals and administration. Cloud computing, wireless protocols and a touch of forensics (which I love). Five months after completing the course I studied and passed the sec+ then a year after that I studied and passed the cysa+. After going through all of that, I am slowly coming to the realization that getting the a+ would have helped me get an I.T. job faster. Now I am studying for the a+ while still driving 60+ hours a week 2 years later with no job hits…😣

Hello sir, I really appreciate your info and for being so honest!
I’ve been thinking to break in the IT field and I was thinking about cloud security. Is there any prerequisites certifications I should do before starting cloud security? for example, should I still go for the comptia A+ certificate or which is the best path?
I appreciate your response and thanks!

This man is telling the truth. I fell for the boot camp lie. "Guaranteed to make six figures after completion." In reality, all I received was student loan debt zero job offers, zero job assistance NOTHING. Instead, I wish I had paid $15 for whatever cybersecurity source and gone on about my way. I've been Sec+ certified for over a year, and I am no closer to getting a job than I was before I gained the certification. Here's another thing these boot camp people won't tell you. If you want to work for the government and don't have a security clearance. They won't even waste time looking at you without a clearance. Now, I'm not telling any of you reading this not to get into cyber. Just don't, DON'T go the boot camp route. They just want your money while offering you NOTHING in return.

Hi sir how can you start with basic? Do you provide online classes? Im interested please show me the way forwards

  22. @CyberDevilSec

    October 24, 2024 at 11:07 am

Misleading title because if you know fundamentals (like me) then cybersecurity training from certain companies is great.

So what you say is actually half true. Certain trainings are a scam because their not a trusted company.
You can be any youtuber and teach security.
But if companies like Cisco offer you a course about cybersec when you know basics in Programming, Linux, Networking, hardware, Different OS like windows, Mac and understand cloud, then YES! It's not a scam.

You are targeting a audience that's new to IT and that's only relevant for those people.
The only way i can see it's a scam it's if the guy has a Indian accent with a potato mic and is making you cringe within seconds. Now imagine if someone pays for a course like that… Now that would be a scam.
But Tryhackme, HackTheBox, Cisco, Juniper, CEH, Offsec, ETC are the biggest players and i'll guarantee you that they hold lots of value!

Tryhackme also has beginner friendly concept courses that teach Networking and progresses into cybersec once you complete the basics.

  23. @mattstroker3742

    October 24, 2024 at 11:07 am

It's not just knowing the basics but understanding EVERYTHING into the deepest levels. And you should already know it all because you've enjoyed learning that stuff during the past 15 years orso.

  24. @Ryangreyart.

    October 24, 2024 at 11:07 am

It's crazy I'm taking the google certificate. But as I'm doing it. I realize I know lots about little things. I build computers I've been learning python just to mass upload my nfts. Ip address and stuff I know because I've been on computers for over thirty years. But siem tools and controls are all new. I feel like I can do it. And I feel most people can do it. But take couses that teach the basics. Lots are free. You can learn a lot

  26. @StreetSouljaz1

    October 24, 2024 at 11:07 am

Great work! I see your passion. Educating those aspiring to join the field to get the basics and not jump into and give the industry a bad rep.

Sorry to tell you it's not a lie. I know 2 people who make 6 figures. Probably not the norm though.

  29. @diddykangable

    October 24, 2024 at 11:07 am

cybersecurity is a fad degree, just like engineering and computer science were back in the day. 4-6 years ago colleges kept telling student that cybersecurity was the career to get into and it had millions of openings. Now all those students have graduated and all the openings have been filled. The number floating around linkedin is 750,000 displaced workers in cybersecurity this year. 90% of listings are for senior roles and roughly 40% of listings aren't even real. All the entry level roles are also very replaceable with AI systems so it's getting even harder to get into.
None of the training or education for cybersecurity really prepare you for any of the jobs. There are so many different tools and technologies and every jobs requires you to have extensive knowledge on whichever ones they're specifically using that it's impossible to specialize in anything before being hired for a specific role especially since the knowledge of some of the more used tech is locked behind several thousand dollar paywalls that you probably cant afford if you're starting your career out.

Learning cybersecurity is really counterproductive since all the education around it is just "here's the exact same networking course you just took but this time we're going to tell you to not leave every port open" Just learn generic computer shit and slap some common sense on top of it and you're already doing better than 99% of the non-security people you'll interact with. There's even a good chance that your interviewer is going to mock you for getting certs saying something along the lines of "just because someone has a cert doesn't mean they know anything" so don't focus too hard on the certs, they're too expensive for how outdated or useless most of em are.

I never saw a cyber security that cost more than $49 dollars. What If a person wants to just learn something new not looking for a job just learning period? Learning is a lifelong event.
