Games Inbox: Will there be a new Zelda game in 2026?

There’s been no talk of Zelda anniversary game so far (Nintendo)

The Monday letters page is curious to see if Minecraft and Fortnite will come to Nex Playground, as another reader falls in love with Sektori.

PLEASE NOTE: We are currently preparing articles to run over the Christmas and New Year break, so if you’ve been thinking of writing a Reader’s Feature now would be the perfect time to send it in. It can be on any subject you want, as long as it’s a minimum of 500 words long.

Forgotten birthday
There’s been a lot of talk about how weird Nintendo are being in not announcing a new Super Mario game for the movie next year but I haven’t heard anyone mention that it’s the 40th anniversary of Zelda next year. Not just next year, but February 21! And yet as far as I know they haven’t announced anything.

I know Nintendo has previous for ignoring major anniversaries (they also ignored Donkey Kong and Mario turning 40 but that was during Covid) but surely they’re not going to let 40 years of Zelda pass by without a celebration/sales opportunity?

I didn’t realise it was so soon until I looked it up, but what does anyone think they’ll do? There’s been some talk of spin-offs lately but there doesn’t seem time to announce anything in time for February. Although they could announce it in February for later in the year. A remake of the very first game? That’d be my guess, but who knows. I just hope it’s something good and not a cheap money grab.

Quiet ending
I completely agree with the Reader’s Feature at the weekend, about consoles dying, and especially the bit about no one doing anything about. Sony is asleep at the wheel, Xbox can’t do anything, and even Nintendo don’t seem to have their hearts in it anymore.

I don’t know how much of this is because of rising hardware prices, but it just feels like they know the gig is up and are trying to fleece as many people as possible before the whole thing becomes economically impossible.

Sony in particular, I’m just disgusted at how little leadership we’ve seen from them in recent years. I don’t even know who’s in charge of them anymore and I don’t think they’ve said anything in public since Jim Ryan left. It feels like console gaming is going out with a whimper, not a bang.

Lack of love
Now that Metroid Prime 4 is out and not exactly the most popular thing ever I wonder, not what will happen to Metroid as a franchise, but what will happen to developer Retro Studios? In recent years all they’ve made is Metroid Prime and Donkey Kong Country. But after Bananza I can’t imagine them going back to making another Country game.

So what happens to them? Do they immediately start making Metroid Prime 5, despite no one liking this one, or do they make something brand new? I’d prefer that but I’m also aware that if this wasn’t Nintendo they’d probably be shut down over this failure. I don’t think Nintendo would do that but it’s not like they’re a charity either, so it’s not impossible. Here’s hoping the next game is better loved.

Berenstain Bears
Just finished the Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. Whilst I wouldn’t say it was awful, it certainly felt very sanitary. It makes me not want a remaster for any of the other games.

It felt as though the non-player characters were dumber, if that was possible. The zombies have laser focused grabs. You can’t vomit if you drink too much alcohol. Pretty sure they’ve removed the guts from the guy punch move.

I’m also now aware that I have the Mandela effect with this game. For an entire playthrough I was wondering when I would be getting combo weapons. Turns out I was combining this game and the second, and best game, with the original. When I say second I mean, of course, the Off The Record version with Frank and not the second with Chuck.

Moderately complicated
I hope the Zelda boss was just being polite, because I really can’t imagine anything you’d want to take from Hyrule Warriors to inspire the next mainline game, and I don’t even hate Hyrule Warriors that much. But what would you take? He can only be talking about more complex combat, right?

That’s a decent idea in theory but if Zelda was to get a combat overhaul I’d want it to be something closer to Devil May Cry than Hyrule Warriors. You wouldn’t have it as complicated as anything Capcom would do but a bit more complicated wouldn’t hurt. But to be honest, I’d rather leave it as it is if it means not picking up any bad habits from an inferior franchise.

Apples vs. oranges
So, I bought Silent Hill 2 as it was 50% discount on Xbox launch. And my honest thoughts: don’t get the hype really. The roster of weapons is extremely basic: handgun, shotgun, rifle – nothing original there.

Most areas are extremely dark and I’m not sure why, as it adds little to the gameplay apart from using the flashlight which serves no other purpose. The maze-like corridors are constructed in such a way to frustrate and be boring as it’s a chore to walk through them. The worst example is shortly after Toluca Prison, where you seem to descend into the Earth’s core itself, only to get lost.

The pattern of play is find key, solve puzzle, find object, unlock door, find key, solve puzzle, etc., etc. All the while whacking the same enemies over and over again in a repetitive manner. It’s not a bad game but many other games with these gameplay mechanics would be criticised. I think Bloober did a good job even though some of the games areas feel padded out.

But I think the gameplay is a sign of the times that this game was released in. I also was waiting in anticipation for this, thinking it would be an improvement on Silent Hill f. But actually, I think I prefer Silent Hill f more because at least I think I prefer the protagonist Hinako in that, instead of James who has no personality whatsoever.

This game makes me even more keenly anticipate Resident Evil Requiem, as I think it may knock Silent Hill 2 out of the park.

GC: That may be the most uncharitable description of a video game we’ve ever heard. Why are you complaining about the paucity of guns when Silent Hill f has none at all?

Don’t miss an issue
I am very sorry to bother you, I was subscribed to receive the GameCentral newsletter but I have not received one since the 6th December.

I have signed up again but have missed out on the 13th and 20th December if they are sent out on a Saturday, I would be very grateful if you could send me the one’s that I have missed, please.

GC: As far as we know they all went out as normal, have you checked your spam folder? We’ll try and forward them to you later though.

RE: Gyros. Super Metroid was the same in terms of not being able to go back once you are in the final area.

Once you were inside Tourian (the final 15 odd minute section of the game) that was it, the door was sealed shut, therefore you couldn’t go back to aim for a 100% items collected rate.

I always enjoyed rescuing the animals (or aliens?) in the absolutely superb escape part, after defeating the final boss though. That was something I didn’t know you could do until I read about it online a few years back.

I know it’s been repeated many times before but it really was/is a very special game and looking back I was so pleased afterwards, that for Xmas 1994 my parents refused to pay the ridiculous £65 for Mortal Kombat 2 from Woolworths, so I had to ‘make do’ with Super Metroid for £40 instead. Good times.

GC: That’s a good price for Super Metroid in 1994.

Thanks for the Sektori review. I’d never heard of it before then. As a long-time lover of twin stick shooters, I had to buy it, bargain price and all. It’s right up my street, having loved Robotron: 2084, Smash T.V., Resogun. and Nex Machina. Hard though innit?

GC: It’s not easy, no. But we’re glad you enjoyed it.

So how long until games like Fortnite and Minecraft start showing up on Nex Playground? I bet it won’t be long and then suddenly we have a new console maker on our hands that’s going to undercut Nintendo for the family market.
Korbie

GC: We’re not sure that would work, unless they release a controller for it.
