It has seen a surge in popularity years after it was first released.
An unconventional horror film, deemed too intense for some viewers, is currently available on Netflix.
The Block Island Sound was initially launched on the streaming service in 2021 following a successful festival run and continues to attract new audiences. The movie recently saw a physical 4K Blu Ray release in certain markets, prompting those unfamiliar with it to give it a watch on Netflix.
The plot revolves around a fisherman’s family who confront terrifying realities and hidden truths when a sinister force off the coast of Block Island, a real location near Rhode Island, starts decimating wildlife. This sets the stage for a suspenseful journey towards uncovering the truth behind these events.
The film was penned and directed by brothers Kevin and Matthew McManus and features Chris Sheffield, recognised for his roles in The Maze Runner films and Transformers Dark of the Moon, reports the Daily Record.

Blending elements of horror and science fiction, The Block Island Sound received positive reviews from critics, earning a commendable 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes. One critic remarked: “This moody and mysterious horror thriller grabbed my attention and did not let go until the very end.”
Another praised the film as “is a visually arresting and genre-defying movie full of intrigue.”
However, devotees of the film have issued warnings that it won’t suit everyone’s tastes. They point to its unconventional take on the horror genre – eschewing monsters and graphic violence in favour of a gradual escalation of tension.
One enthusiast simply remarked: “This film is weird and brilliant. Something different. I was captured from start to finish. Give it a go.”
Another viewer shared their thoughts online, stating: “If you come to see a creature feature and gore, don’t watch this film. If you come for atmosphere and an utterly human experience of the unknowable, this is just the movie for you! The Block Island Sound is slow paced and set inside a family with already strained relationships. They are beset by something out of the pages of Lovecraft.”
They continued: “This film beautifully dealt with its mystery so that even at the end, I’m not convinced I know what really happened. From the start of the film, we are thrown into sound, which gets more unsettling as it doesn’t relent. Almost every scene is seeped in some or other background noise which has the effect of de-realising the whole experience.”
A further commentator praised: “Beautifully crafted suspense/mystery/horror that is deeply imbued with subtle influences from David Lynch. Very ominous soundtrack creates a very palpable sense of foreboding. I’m glad the film makers decide to create atmosphere instead of showing violence and gore. Hats off to everyone involved.”
While someone else said: “This film is absolutely brilliant. It’s viciously uncomfortable in such a way that not only does it keep you on edge the entire time, it also keeps you second guessing yourself. It drags you again and again into situations that more often than not leave you scared and alone over the blackened deep, and it harps on your fear of the unknown nearly constantly. Don’t expect jump scares and your typical horror cliches, instead you should expect a slow burning sense of helpless dread.”
Block Island Sound is streaming on Netflix.
