FPL tips and team of gameweek 23: Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Luis Diaz should haul v Ipswich

Published

on

Antonin Kinsky, Spurs, keeper, £4.5m – home to Leicester

Spurs aren’t a defence you’d usually back but Leicester have scored just twice in their past seven games.

Kinsky has impressed so far since signing for Spurs from Slavia Prague and the Czech keeper made four saves at Everton last week.

With a bit of luck you could get a clean sheet and bonus-type performance.

Lucas Digne, Aston Villa, £4.6m – home to West Ham

Only Trent Alexander-Arnold (13) has created more big chances this season than Digne.

The Frenchman is also top three for total crosses and the jury is out on West Ham’s attack under Graham Potter.

Fulham gifted them two goals when the Hammers won 3-2 a couple of weeks ago and they failed to break down Palace last week.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool, £7.3m – home to Ipswich

Two double-digit scores in his past four games, home to a struggling side and with a double gameweek coming up.

Alexander-Arnold is about to become essential so put him in your team (if you can afford the whopping price tag!).

Pervis Estupinan, Brighton, £5m – home to Everton

I’m not buying the idea that Everton will suddenly start scoring loads under David Moyes, despite putting three past Spurs last week.

Brighton will control possession and that gives their full-backs chance to get plenty of attacking touches.

Estupinan’s underlying data is nothing special but it does tell us that he is Brighton’s most likely defender to get a return.

Roy Keane, 53, recommended for new job ahead of Man Utd and Rangers clash

Published

on

Roy Keane would be a brilliant addition to Ruben Amorim’s coaching staff at Manchester United.

That’s according to former Red Devils star Gary Pallister, who believes the Irishman’s experience and no-nonsense approach would benefit the falling giants.

Keane was a key player for United during his playing days, with the 53-year-old seven Premier League titles.

He also won four FA Cups, while he helped the Red Devils win the Champions League in 1999 – even if he missed the clash through suspension.

Fast-forward to 2025 and United are a shadow of the team that dominated domestic football during Sir Alex Ferguson’s time in charge.

They currently sit 13th in the Premier League table and will go into today’s Europa League clash with Rangers hoping to bounce back after a torrid 3-1 defeat to Brighton last time out.

And former United star Pallister believes Keane would be a good addition to Amorim’s coaching staff as the 39-year-old looks to turn things around.

JUST IN:Luke Littler receives warning about ‘scandal’ after darts star turned 18

Speaking to Punters Lounge, who offer the latest horse racing betting, he said: “If Roy Keane was to return to Manchester United on the coaching staff then he would certainly shake things up.

“Ruben Amorim has often talked about the successful history of the club but it is tough to bring former players back.

“Ruud van Nistelrooy did well before going to Leicester, Bryan Robson might have had a chance to go back there when he was coaching. You also look at names like Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs.

“A lot has changed at Manchester United since these players left the club including new ownership and potentially a new stadium soon, but Keane would definitely shake things up in that dressing room.”

With each passing match, United seem to go backwards.

They have failed to win, or even seriously compete, for the Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement nearly 12 years ago.

And Pallister admits it’s hard to put a timeline on when United will be back for competing for the biggest trophies on offer.

“It’s difficult to put a timeline on it,” he said when asked when United will next secure glory. “Who’d have thought in 1990 when we nearly went into the relegation zone that we’d win the FA Cup that year and we’d win in Europe the following year? You didn’t really see that.

“The green shoots probably at the end of 1990. The FA Cup win was huge in sending United forward and having that confidence within the team to go on and win trophies.

“So that took us four years, seven years I think it was for Alex to get to the promised land of winning the Premier League title.

“I like the way Ruben comes across. He’s steadfast, he’s not moving, he’s a believer in his system. I think he speaks well.

“He’s not going to suffer fools, if you don’t want to be there, I don’t think you’re going to be there. If you don’t show the right attitude, you’re not going to be there. He’s setting the ground rules at the moment and hopefully most of the players will go along with him in that.”

Renato Veiga: Juventus agree £4.2m loan move for Chelsea defender

Published

on

Juventus are set to sign Chelsea defender Renato Veiga on loan until the end of the season.

The Italian club have agreed to cover the Portugal’s international’s wages and pay a £3.8m loan fee.

No option to buy has been included in the deal.

Veiga only joined Chelsea in an £11.8m deal in July from Swiss club Basel.

Sources close to the player said he grew frustrated playing at left-back, preferring to be used at centre-back.

Chelsea believe he will get more minutes in Italy with the player ambitious to stay in Portugal’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.

Juventus have beaten Champions League rivals Borussia Dortmund to Veiga’s signing.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca had urged Veiga to stay last week, saying: “If there is a player who just wants to play in one position, they’re going to struggle.”

Veiga has made just one Premier League start this season in 18 appearances in all competitions.

Australian Open 2025 results: Aryna Sabalenka beats Paula Badosa to reach final and continue bid for third Melbourne title

Published

on

Aryna Sabalenka will have the chance to become the first woman in 26 years to win three successive Australian Open titles after reaching the Melbourne final with a commanding win over Paula Badosa.

Belarusian top seed Sabalenka, who previously described Badosa as her “soulmate”, recovered from an early setback to win 6-4 6-2.

Badosa, contesting her first major semi-final, quickly went 2-0 up but the Spanish 11th seed would win just four of the next 16 games.

Sabalenka will face Iga Swiatek or Madison Keys in the final, where she will aim to emulate Martina Hingis’ three straight titles between 1997-99.

It was a 20th straight victory at the Australian Open for two-time defending champion Sabalenka.

She will keep her world number one ranking if Swiatek loses in the semi-finals – and if the Pole advances, the winner of Saturday’s championship match will take the top spot.

Should Swiatek join Sabalenka in the final, it would be the first time since 2018 that the Australian Open women’s final has featured the top two seeds.

Omar Marmoush: How Man City may use Egyptian forward & how he was used at Eintracht Frankfurt

Published

on

It is rare that a 25-year-old suddenly emerges as a £59m signing, almost from nowhere.

While Omar Marmoush has been a relatively successful goalscorer in the German Bundesliga for a few seasons, he has had to patiently wait for his big break before being announced as Manchester City’ s third January signing on Thursday after a prolific start to the season.

He arrived in Germany from the Egyptian second division as an 18-year-old, having been spotted by ex-Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs, spending a couple of seasons in the youth side before making his senior debut in May 2020.

Giggs, then an analyst for Uefa, saw Marmoush at an under-17s tournament in Dubai and told an agent about him, who alerted Pierre Littbarski, head of scouting at Wolfsburg.

“Marmoush was really fast at that time, took a lot of risks, was technically strong and did some surprising things.” Littbarski said later. “He was an uncut diamond.”

Wolfsburg invited Marmoush, 17 at the time, to a trial session and subsequently signed him for the club’s youth academy.

“Imagine this, he goes from Cairo to Wolfsburg – that is a completely different world,” Littbarski added.

“He just wanted to play. This is a typical street footballer. When he comes into such a passing-oriented system, then it is not easy.”

Back in 2021, the versatile forward was surplus to requirements and sent out on loan by Wolfsburg.

He had loan spells at St Pauli and Stuttgart, only displaying his abilities in spurts but never over the course of a full season.

It was the move from Wolfsburg to Frankfurt on a free in 2023 that turned Marmoush into a sought-after striker that has now seen Manchester City acquire his services.

Despite the serious influx of cash, Frankfurt were not happy when the Blues first contacted them about a potential January transfer, because Marmoush has become their life insurance, repeatedly scoring game-winning goals right until the very end.

Frankfurt can feel grateful for the 37 goals and 20 assists which he delivered in 67 games but, at the same time, the Egyptian ought to be thankful to Frankfurt and particularly manager Dino Toppmoller for bringing out the best in him.

After a 2-0 win over Dortmund last Friday, Marmoush, who did not play in the game, said goodbye to the fans and then was celebrated by his team-mates.

A team-mate of Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah for his country, Marmoush has become one of the breakout stars in Europe this season with 20 goals in 26 games for Frankfurt – 15 in the Bundesliga.

German football expert Raphael Honigstein told BBC Sport: “He is really dynamic, a wide forward who can play through the middle.

“Some people have compared him to Mohamed Salah, perhaps not as tricky or as explosive but his finishing is incredible.”

Paris Fury’s feelings on Tyson Fury retirement revealed with boxing icon always ‘very stressed’

Published

on

Paris Fury is said to be ‘relieved’ that Tyson Fury has retired from boxing, even if there’s a possibility he’ll return to the ring for a blockbuster bout with Anthony Joshua.

The 36-year-old called time on his career at the start of the month, just weeks after losing to Oleksandr Usyk for a second time in Saudi Arabia.

Fury was so determined to win that rematch that he didn’t speak to wife Paris for three months.

The couple were reunited after the bout but reports have previously suggested that his career, and the travelling and dedication it requires, have impacted the pair.

Now, according to OK!, Paris is reportedly ‘so relieved’ that her husband seems to be done with boxing.

An insider also claims that Fury is usually ‘very stressed and antsy’ before a big fight – with the couple now enjoying spending more time together.

“Paris is so relieved that Tyson has said he’s finally retiring,” they’re quoted as saying.

“She wants a bit of normality and ‘them’ time – they need it. He’s always very stressed and antsy before and after a fight so all of their lives have revolved around boxing.”

Tyson and Paris were recently snapped together at Disneyland Paris.

They appeared to be in good spirits out in France and the insider claims they’re happier than ever.

“Now Tyson has retired from boxing, they’re happier than ever and spending a lot more time together, reigniting the spark in their relationship,” they continued.

They also suggest that Fury and Paris could end up renewing their vows, such is their love for each other.

However, while the Gypsy King seems to be done with boxing, there’s still a possibility he could be lured back.

Talk of a showdown with Joshua has rumbled on for years and Eddie Hearn, AJ’s promoter, remains keen for it to happen.

Hearn is working on alternative opponents for the Watford-born star is Fury declines the chance to come back.

But the boxing legend could earn a staggering sum if he faces Joshua in what would arguably be the biggest boxing match in British history.

Meanwhile, Teddy Atlas believes Fury ‘fears retirement’ because of how much he’s relied on boxing over the years.

Speaking to CanadaCasino.Ca, Atlas said: “Yes [Tyson Fury fears retirement] because I think boxing stabilises his life.

“I have a lot of respect for Tyson Fury. I think he’s a tremendous fighter and I think he’s a great symbol.

“I do think he’s afraid [to retire], because I think that having this in his life, having boxing, the structure of boxing, the discipline, the people around him in camp, is a reason to get up every day and be strong.

“He’s smart, he’s not dumb. He’s very smart. I think he realises that it’s important in his life, but at some point, he has to learn to live life without the help of boxing.

“It’s kind of like you stop doing drugs or you stop drinking. Whatever it is.

“You have a sponsor, you have somebody that’s with you, and he goes to the meetings with you, and he meets you every day when you feel like you’re getting a little weak.

“He’s there for you, that person. But someday he can’t be there. There has to come a day where it’s just you. And that day is here.”
