A man has been arrested in connection with the death of Tasia Fortune, a black woman who was found hanging from a tree in Mississippi.

Police discovered Fortune’s body hanging in the backyard of an abandoned home in Jackson on August 3. The state medical examiner’s office determined that the death was a homicide, Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney said.

Brackney said at a news conference on Friday, September 11 that police had secured search and arrest warrants for the man and arrested him when they encountered him walking on the street.

The medical examiner’s determination allowed police to execute the warrants they already had on hand.

“This case remains active and additional arrests will be pending,” Brackney said.

Christy Spivey, Fortune’s mother, said Friday after police told her of the arrest that, “I just started crying and told them ‘thank you, thank you, thank you.’”

Spivey said police did not share a motive or whether DNA led them to the arrest. Spivey said she did not know the man who had been arrested, but was asking her daughter’s friends if they knew him. Spivey described the family as “in disbelief” and “shock.”

“We still don’t have a lot of answers,” Spivey said.

Fortune died less than a year after the hanging deaths of 21-year-old Trey Reed, a Black student at Delta State University in Cleveland, and Cory Zukatis, an unhoused white man in his 30s, in Vicksburg.

At least 44 people have been hurt after a passenger train carrying approximately 180 people came off the rails in northern France, authorities have confirmed.

The train derailed near Cléon in Normandy at about 7.45pm on September 11, with one carriage tipping over and four carriages leaving the tracks, reports the Express.

Local reports have since indicated the number of casualties could be greater, with an 18 year old woman reportedly in a critical condition and 43 passengers said to have sustained minor injuries. A major emergency response was launched following the incident, with French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot saying 140 firefighters had been dispatched to the scene.

The regional TER train had been travelling between Rouen and Caen when it derailed between Tourville and Elbeuf-Saint-Aubin, in the vicinity of the Cléon commune in Seine-Maritime. Mr Tabarot said: “At this time, the provisional report indicates about twenty injured. 140 firefighters are deployed on site to provide assistance to the injured and passengers.

“Along with the prefect, who is heading to the scene and coordinating the mobilization of emergency services, and the SNCF teams, we are closely following the situation.”

The prefecture of Normandy and Seine-Maritime separately estimated that roughly 200 passengers had been on board, compared with the figure of 180 given by the transport minister. It stated: “A passenger train operating the Rouen-Caen route derailed this evening, Friday, September 11, around 7:45 pm, near the municipalities of Cléon and Tourville-la-Rivière.

“Approximately 200 passengers were on board.”

The prefect of Seine-Maritime activated the departmental operational centre at 8pm, just 15 minutes after the derailment, and triggered the ORSEC NOVI emergency plan for incidents involving numerous victims.

The prefecture urged members of the public to keep away from the area, adding: “It is requested to avoid the area. Situation updates will be communicated regularly.”

Questions are now being raised about what caused the train to leave the tracks.

A police source told French broadcaster BFMTV that the regional train struck an unidentified object prior to the derailment.

However, the cause of the crash has not yet been officially confirmed.

One woman quoted by local media described broken windows following the impact, with passengers reportedly sustaining injuries from shards of glass and objects on board the train.

Rail services have been brought to a complete standstill in both directions on the Rouen-Caen line in the wake of the derailment.

Services on the Paris-Rouen-Le Havre and Rouen-Amiens routes have also faced severe disruption, according to local reports.

Emergency operations are continuing at the scene and the public prosecutor’s office has now launched an investigation to establish the cause of the accident.

At around seven o’clock last Saturday morning, dozens of men dressed in black climbed into the backs of lorries in a quiet Kent village called Preston-next-Wingham.

The style of protest is a new development in the crowded world of British hard-right and far-right politics. It was visually striking, and the men – who were part of a new group called Patriot Platform – chanted “Christ is King” as well as “Stop the Boats”.

On Sunday, using a social media live stream, Thomas was able to organise a second, more impromptu protest of a few hundred people in his home city of Portsmouth.

His activists tried to block coaches that had come to collect migrants, who had arrived illegally, brought ashore after making the long journey from Normany in France.

On Thursday, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood met senior police officers and urged them to make full use of their powers to stop activists wearing face coverings.

“These scenes have caused disruption for people and, given that people are dressed in black wearing balaclavas, there is a fear factor and obvious malign intent being communicated to our residents,” she said.

“This makes it different from other protests, so we need to make sure we are learning lessons.”

Some of Patriot Platform’s disruptive, eye-catching tactics seem to have been borrowed from environmental groups like Just Stop Oil. But its leaders are also getting ideas and funding from the growing “Christian nationalism” seen in the United States.

It organisers say they are building a working-class “voting bloc” to persuade political parties on the right to adopt their agenda.

Dozens of airport passengers were left coughing “and some vomited blood” after tear gas was sprayed near a terminal coffee shop, a court has heard.

Terminal 3 at Heathrow Airport was closed for hours after the incident on December 7 last year, which also saw gas sprayed in the face of a woman who had her suitcase stolen.

Tyrone Richards, 31; Anton Clarke-Butcher, 25; Omoneke Whyte, 31; and Denzel Eduardo, 29, pleaded guilty to affray at Isleworth Crown Court in June.

A sentencing hearing at the same court on Friday heard three of the defendants, wearing face coverings and dark clothing, sprayed a substance “believed to be CS spray” into a lift at an airport car park at 8am.

The lift contained two women who had arrived on a British Airways flight from Johannesburg in South Africa that morning and two men who had met the women at the airport.

The court heard that the defendants were prevented from entering the lift by the group as “innocent parties ran away from the lift in some distress”.

Gas was emitted once the lift arrived at the ground floor, causing “difficulties for people, particularly at a Caffè Nero nearby” with some people being taken to hospital, the court heard.

A barista at Caffè Nero, who started to cough and vomit blood, told the court she was “scared” as she “felt fine one minute and then almost instantly unwell”.

The women who had arrived from Johannesburg then went to an airport taxi forecourt where the defendants followed them and took their suitcases – which were never recovered.

CS gas, which is used by police forces worldwide as tear gas to temporarily incapacitate people, was sprayed in the face of one of the women at close range at 8.03am “causing her to start coughing and choking”, the court heard.

Passengers leaving and travelling to the airport faced disruption, including delays to shuttle buses and trains, after Terminal 3 was locked down following the incident.

A customer service agent at Terminal 3 said the incident was “terrifying”, adding she “felt dizzy and like I was going to pass out” and that a woman in a wheelchair she was assisting “was struggling to breathe and using an inhaler”.

A mother who arrived from a flight from South Africa with her 14-month-old son said her child started to cough, telling the court: “I was immediately afraid for my baby’s safety and my own safety”.

A man who was ordering a taxi from the airport’s car park said “20 to 30 people were all coughing” after the incident and he was “struggling to breathe”.

Prosecutor Gary Rutter said he “could not say exactly what led to this incident”, but “one may suspect what was going on”. He added that the incident left “members of the public, coughing, vomiting, and some vomited blood”.

Richards was arrested while still at the airport and the other three defendants were later identified and arrested separately.

Genevieve Moss, representing Eduardo, said the CS gas “was discharged by the rival group”, adding he has asthma and this would have had a “dangerous impact on him”.

The lawyer said Eduardo, who has 12 previous convictions for 18 offences, would have “not agreed to take part in any activity involving such a substance” and expressed “deep remorse”.

Rushnay Sikander, representing Whyte, said he was “very remorseful”, adding he had a “traumatic childhood” including his father being murdered when he was five years old and that he had been the victim of three separate stabbings.

Shanda McAteer, representing Clarke-Butcher, who has 14 convictions for 31 offences, said he denied releasing the gas and “genuinely expresses remorse”.

Patrick Harte, representing Richards, who has three previous convictions, said he was “not present when the first spray was released” and was “sorry to innocent bystanders suffering anguish”.

Mr Justice Inyundo will sentence the defendants on Wednesday.

A study of 2,000 adults found just 35 per cent of those aged 50 and above knew you should be eating 30g of fibre a day as part of your diet.

But 48 per cent also admitted they don’t know which foods can help increase their intake, with 30 per cent convinced they don’t have enough fibre.

In comparison, 75 per cent of Gen Z feel confident they can identify high-fibre foods, with those aged 18-29 crediting social media (29 per cent) and influencers (15 per cent) for their knowledge of what they need to eat.

Gen Z also emerged as the most likely to keep a close eye on their health, with 84 per cent tracking metrics such as calories (43 per cent), sleep (40 per cent) and steps (34 per cent), or the protein (36 per cent) and fibre (26 per cent) they are consuming.

The study was commissioned by Kellogg’s, which is encouraging adults in mid-life to embrace the F-word at the breakfast table each morning.

Nutritionist, May Simpkin, said: “Fibre has a bit of a reputation problem.

“People know it matters, but it can still sound functional, clinical or even a little boring.

“In reality, it is one of the most important everyday nutrients to understand, particularly in midlife.

“Ironically, the over-50s are the least confident age group when it comes to fibre, with many unsure how much they should be eating each day.

“The good news is that increasing fibre does not need to mean a complicated diet overhaul.

“Breakfast is one of the easiest places to start, whether that is choosing a high-fibre cereal, adding fruit, seeds or nuts, or simply becoming more aware of the foods that help you move closer to your daily target.”

The study also found fibre was not top of mind for many, with 27 per cent of all those polled admitting it is not an important consideration for them when making food choices, while 41 per cent aren’t confident they could name high-fibre foods.

More than four in 10 (42 per cent) don’t feel they have a good understanding of how much fibre experts recommend, with only 36 per cent naming this as 30g per day.

As a result, 30 per cent don’t think they have enough fibre in their diet.

Protein topped the list of health topics adults hear about most online or from friends and family (29 per cent), followed by calories and gut health (both 24 per cent).

In contrast, only 12 per cent said they regularly hear conversations about fibre.

While 29 per cent track their daily steps and 25 per cent monitor calories, only 15 per cent keep tabs on their fibre intake.

When it came to boosting consumption, breakfast was seen as the easiest opportunity to get more fibre into the diet, according to 33 per cent of those polled via OnePoll.

Cereal and milk were the most popular breakfast choice overall, eaten by 31 per cent, ahead of eggs and toast, both at 18 per cent.

Meanwhile, 39 per cent said they are actively trying to make healthier choices, with a further 30 per cent admitting they would like to improve their habits but find it difficult.

May Simpkin added: “Fibre doesn’t always compete with trendier health conversations around protein, calories or supplements, even though it plays an important role in our overall wellbeing.

“Many people want to make healthier choices but aren’t always sure where to start, and fibre is often overlooked despite being one of the simplest things we can improve.

“Small changes can have a meaningful impact, particularly when they’re built into existing routines.

“Choosing a fibre-rich breakfast is an easy and accessible way to help close the gap, with some cereals, such as All-Bran, providing 7.8g of fibre – almost a third of your recommended daily intake.”

US President Donald Trump has provoked fury on social media following footage from a service marking the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 atrocities, which seemed to capture him dozing off.

He was present at a Pentagon ceremony, honouring those who perished when al Qaida terrorists commandeered aircraft and murdered nearly 3,000 individuals across three sites.

Trump had opted to attend this gathering instead of joining all previous living presidents at the memorial situated at the ex-World Trade Center location in New York.

Observers spotted the 80 year old seemingly drifting off in his chair during the proceedings, which were extensively televised on news networks.

Pictures and clips from the event depict first lady Melania Trump appearing stern-faced while her husband dozed. At one moment, his head tilted backwards and his mouth hung open.

Incensed viewers flocked to social media to condemn him for showing disrespect to the attack’s victims, reports the Express.

Writing on X, one user posted: “Joe Biden, 83 years-old, battling Stage 4 cancer that’s spread to his bones, stood for hours alongside Dr. Jill Biden, as the names of the 9/11 victims were read. Donald Trump fell asleep at the 9/11 Memorial at the Pentagon. One showed respect while Trump was an embarrassment.”

Another commented: “Trump disrespected 2,977 people murdered on 9/11 by not attending the NY memorial service…Then he falls asleep at the Pentagon service. He doesn’t care about anyone but himself.”

A third observer commented: “Trump fell asleep at the Pentagon during the ceremony for 9/11. He has fallen asleep during a cage fight, a basketball game, July 4th fireworks, and multiple times in the Oval Office with people talking directly to him. There is something seriously wrong with him.”

A fourth expressed outrage: “Trump sleeping at this 9-11 memorial is SO OFFENSIVE TO ALL AMERICANS! ! !”

A fifth vented their anger: “It’s disgusting that trump not only refused to attend the 9/11 memorial in NYC…but he was so disinterested at the Pentagon ceremony that he fell asleep. Meanwhile a sixth raged: “You’re a disgrace Trump falling to sleep at pentagon ceremony. “”.

The US president has faced mounting criticism since returning to the White House amid a string of public blunders and visible signs of bruising and swelling.

The Republican leader has reportedly nodded off in public on numerous occasions throughout the past year, with many incidents occurring during official duties.

The building on St Helens Road has now been demolished, with work continuing around the site.

The crash happened at around 2.10am on Monday, September 7 at the junction with Morris Green Lane.

A van hit with the property, causing significant structural damage and the partial collapse of the building.

The road still remains closed while safety work is carried out around the site.

Scaffolding has been put up around neighbouring properties, with some understood to contain living accommodation.

Workers remain at the scene, with construction activity continuing around the damaged area. The area on the road, which is accessible to pedestrians, is safe.

The remains of the demolished building have now been cleared.

The closure is also still affecting the junction between St Helens Road and Morris Green Lane.

Bolton Council previously said demolition of number 237 was due to be completed after concerns were raised about the stability of a neighbouring building.

A structural engineer had attended the site and further safety measures were required before the road could reopen.

The council said scaffolding would be erected around the neighbouring building as part of those measures.

Emergency services attended the scene shortly after the crash, with nearby residents evacuated as the area was made safe.

Greater Manchester Police said nobody was believed to have been inside the property when the collision happened.

However, the estate agent, whose office was in the building said that the incident had left him “really emotional”. 

A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of failing to provide a breath specimen following the incident.

The cause of the crash has not been confirmed.

Motorists are continuing to be advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes while safety work remains ongoing.

A southern Ohio grandfather whose 16 grandchildren were found living in squalid conditions was declared mentally incompetent to stand trial on Wednesday — but the case is still set to continue against other members of his family.

Gary Siders Sr., 73, appeared in a Vinton County courtroom in a wheelchair and a gray T-shirt, facing 16 counts of child endangerment. The charges stem from a June 30 raid on a rural property in Hamden, Ohio, where authorities discovered 16 children ranging in age from 18 months to 18 years living in a small, 12-by-12-foot room amid severe squalor and human waste.

When police breached the home, Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain described it as a “disgusting scene.” Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson later stated that the isolated youths looked “almost like feral animals” and that several “couldn’t even speak.”

Vinton County Prosecutor William Archer raised no objections to the competency findings.

Discussing the ruling, defense attorney Dorian Baum told The Independent that prosecutors and the defense agreed on the evaluation findings at a September 9 hearing, which classified his client as not only incompetent but permanently unrestorable.

Noting that Siders had experienced a prolonged cognitive decline, Baum stated, “It’s not really a surprise to any of us that he’s not been found competent at this point. He doesn’t fully understand or appreciate what’s going on.”

Following the ruling, the judge kept Siders’ bond active as the state decides whether to drop the charges immediately or pursue a civil commitment through probate court. Baum told The Independent that regardless of which path prosecutors choose, all charges against Siders Sr. are expected to be dismissed soon.

Regarding future care, Baum said that while institutional placement remains a possibility, his team is trying to arrange a private guardianship to keep Siders in his current setting where he is already receiving proper medical care, though the probate court will make the final decision.

Legal proceedings against the three other co-defendants remain active. Siders’ wife Christina Siders, 68, his son Gary Siders Jr., 36, and his daughter-in-law Elizabeth Siders, 33 — who court records show is the mother of all 16 children — have each pleaded not guilty to 19 counts of child endangerment.

Before the competency ruling, Baum defended the patriarch by claiming the house was fully functional with working utilities and food, telling reporters that critics should “step back” from what he argued was a state agency “criminalizing poverty.”

Gallia County Children’s Services opened an inquiry in March 2020 after online educators raised alarms over severe educational neglect, noting that an 11-year-old child could not write the alphabet or pronounce letter sounds and could only count to 12, while a 13-year-old sibling had dropped out of school.

By December 2020, a physician warned officials of severe developmental delays linked to potential lead poisoning, and a later home visit by a caseworker found roaches, gnats and flies swarming the residence along with two children showing insect bites and bruising. Despite this, the agency permitted the parents to retain physical custody under protective supervision before closing the file five months later.

The initial search warrant that led deputies to discover the captive children was executed as part of a separate sex crimes investigation. Gary Siders Jr. and Elizabeth Siders also face separate counts of sexual battery and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor involving individuals outside their immediate family.

All 16 rescued children were initially hospitalized for medical evaluation before being transitioned into state protective custody.

Officials previously noted that the victims lacked formal schooling, medical histories or government documentation as the family moved through various Ohio counties over two decades, with surrounding neighbors reporting that they had never once seen the kids outdoors.
