George Clooney Could Get His ‘ER’ Reunion on ‘The Pitt,’ Confirms HBO Boss

George Clooney may be headed back to the ER — just not the one you’re thinking of. After the Oscar winner said that he’d hop onto Noah Wyle’s hit HBO medical drama The Pitt “in a heartbeat,” HBO Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys has now confirmed the door is wide open for a reunion. Whether it actually happens is still up in the air, but the enthusiasm is real on both sides.

Speaking during a recent HBO press presentation in New York, Bloys said he’d seen Clooney’s comments and was all for the idea. “Sure, he’s welcome,” Bloys said. “I don’t know if that was a real conversation or not, but sure.”

Clooney and Wyle famously starred together on NBC’s ER, one of the biggest network dramas of the ’90s, and the two have remained close friends ever since. While promoting his new Netflix film Jay Kelly, Clooney once again praised Wyle’s career resurgence and The Pitt’s success. “I’d do [The Pitt] in a heartbeat,” he said, while noting he hadn’t actually brought it up to Wyle yet.

“It is his show. I don’t want to interrupt. But I am deeply proud of him, if I’m allowed to be proud of him.”

That might be understating it — Clooney has repeatedly talked up The Pitt, calling it “a beautiful show” and praising Wyle for his craftsmanship both as the series’ star and executive producer. Speaking on Late Night with Seth Meyers in June, Clooney said: “He is just the most honorable, talented young man. I cannot be happier for his success on the show.”

HBO Wants More Shows Like The Pitt

Clooney’s potential cameo comes at a time when HBO is quietly reshaping its original programming strategy around The Pitt’s success. The medical drama — a 15-episode pressure cooker following one brutal shift inside the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center — has become a word-of-mouth juggernaut. It earned a 95% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, captured a massive audience, and swept major Emmy categories.

According to HBO Max’s Head of Originals Sarah Aubrey, streaming needs more “network-style” shows that return annually with long seasons viewers can live with for weeks. The Pitt served as the perfect proof of concept. Its longer, 15-episode format allowed viewers to binge, talk, and pull others in — a model HBO now plans to replicate. Two new dramas have already been greenlit under this structure: American Blue, a gritty cop drama from Supernatural showrunner Jeremy Carver, and How To Survive Without Me, a sweeping family series.

The Pitt is available to stream on HBO Max. Season 2 is scheduled to premiere on January 8, 2026.
