Senators sign Drake Batherson to eight-year contract extension
Batherson and the Senators agreed to terms on an eight-year contract extension, the team announced Tuesday. It is the largest contract in franchise history and comes with an average annual value of $10.5 million.
“Drake exemplifies what it is to be an Ottawa Senator,” said GM Steve Staios in a statement provided by the team. “He was drafted and developed by our organization and has shown a commitment to wanting to be in Ottawa long term. We view him as a key part of our core group.”
The deal comes before the new CBA between the NHL and NHLPA kicks in on Wednesday, which lowers the maximum term on a contract to seven years for a re-signing player and six years for a player changing teams in free agency.
Batherson’s new extension will begin in the 2027-28 season after his current six-year, $29.85-million deal expires. This new contract will expire after the 2034-35 season, when Batherson is 37 years old.
Batherson has been steadily improving his offence each year, and last season he scored a career-high 33 goals and 71 points, his seventh consecutive points increase. With former captain Brady Tkachuk traded to the Panthers, the forward will be one of the players counted on to be a leader as the Senators look to build on back-to-back trips to the playoffs.
Batherson has 364 points in 470 regular-season games and ranks 10th on the Senators’ all-time scoring list.

Records fell across the league as several of the game’s biggest stars delivered unforgettable performances to begin the season.
Josh Allen came through when the Bills needed him most, Derrick Henry further cemented his place among the all-time greats and T.J. Watt joined exclusive company. Meanwhile, the Bears and Panthers produced a Week 1 shootout unlike any the NFL had seen before.
From record-breaking individual performances to points coming at a historic pace, the opening week had a little bit of everything. Here are the numbers that put an unforgettable Week 1 into perspective:
2026 Week 1 Ties NFL Scoring Record
- The 791 points scored across 16 games this week tied 2012 for the most points scored in Week 1 NFL history.
- Sunday’s 13 games combined for 693 total points, averaging 53.3 points per game, making it the highest-scoring Week 1 Sunday in NFL history
Points Galore in Carolina
- The 96 combined points between the Bears and Panthers is the most in a Week 1 game in NFL history; the previous record was 88 points in 2018, between the Saints and Buccaneers.
- The Bears 59 points is the 2nd most they’ve scored in a game in the Super Bowl era (61 points in Week 14, 1980 vs the Packers).
- The Bears 59 points are the most they have ever scored in a regular-season road game.
- The Bears recorded six rushing touchdowns for the second time in franchise history, and for the first time since 1941.
- The Bears and Panthers combined for 96 points, tied for the 12th-most in a game in NFL history.
- Since the start of the 2025 season, the Bears now have three games with 250+ rushing yards. The rest of the NFL only has four in that span.
- T.J. Watt recorded his 10th interception of his career; he joins Julius Peppers as the only players in NFL history to record 100+ career sacks and 10+ interceptions.
- T.J. Watt is the first player in NFL history to have two sacks and an interception in two different season openers; his last one came in 2017 (sacks became an official stat in 1982).
- Josh Allen became the first quarterback in NFL history with 80 career rushing touchdowns.
- Josh Allen recorded his first career road win at the Texans; entering Sunday, he was 0-4 at Houston, including the playoffs, with just two total touchdowns; this was also the Bills’ first road win at Houston since 2006.
- Josh Allen recorded his ninth game with 2+ passing touchdowns and 2+ rushing touchdowns; no player in NFL history has more than four (Steve Young).
- DJ Moore recorded 100 receiving yards in his Bills debut, the second-most by a Bills player in their debut in franchise history (John Brown had 123 in 2019).
- Derrick Henry recorded his 26th career game with 100+ rushing yards and multiple rushing touchdowns, passing Jim Brown (25) for the most such games in NFL history.
- Henry finished with three rushing touchdowns, giving him eight career games with 3+ rushing touchdowns; he is the sixth player in NFL history to reach that mark, joining LaDainian Tomlinson (12), Jim Brown (10), Priest Holmes (nine), Emmitt Smith (nine), Marshall Faulk (eight)
- He is now up to 33 career games with multiple rushing touchdowns, the third-most in NFL history behind Emmitt Smith (36) and LaDainian Tomlinson.
- He passed Marcus Allen for the third-most rushing touchdowns in NFL history, now up to 125.
- Since 2016, Henry now has 125 rushing touchdowns, which is 51 touchdowns more than the next running back in that span (Josh Jacobs and Ezekiel Elliot have 74).
- Gibbs became the fourth player in NFL history to record 14 career games with 2+ rushing touchdowns before turning 25 years old, joining Jim Brown (15), Todd Gurley (15) and Christian McCaffrey (15).
- Gibbs is now the sixth player in NFL history to accumulate 50 touchdowns in his first 50 career games, joining Chuck Foreman, Jim Brown, Steve Van Buren, Larry Johnson, and Marcus Allen.
New Look Giants
- John Harbaugh wins his first game as the New York Giants head coach.
- Tonight is just the third Giants win over the Cowboys in their last 19 meetings.
- The Giants have now defeated the Cowboys in consecutive meetings (Week 18 of 2025 and Week 1 of 2026) after Dallas had previously won 8 consecutive games.
- Jaxson Dart completed 23 of 29 passes (79.3%), posting the highest completion percentage of his career. This was also Dart’s 2nd career game with 3+ pass touchdowns.
- Prior to Sunday, the Giants were 0-8 against the Cowboys in Week 1 primetime games. It was their first win over Dallas in primetime in Week 1.
- Jets and Giants have won their openers for the first time since 2009.
- Justin Jefferson is the third-fastest player in NFL history to reach 8,500 career receiving yards (95 games); the only two players ahead of Justin Jefferson (95 games) are Julio Jones and Lance Alworth, who both reached 8,500 career receiving yards in 90 games.
- With two touchdowns on Sunday, Jefferson has already matched his receiving touchdown total from last year.
- Justin Jefferson’s 39-yard touchdown reception from Carson Wentz was Jefferson’s first deep touchdown (20+ air yards) since Week 16, 2024.
- Josiah Trotter became the only player with a sack and a pick six in their NFL debut; prior to Sunday, no player had ever accomplished this in their NFL debut.
- With a 59-yard reception against the Broncos, Travis Kelce passed Jason Witten for the second-most receiving yards by a tight end in NFL history.
- Kelce now trails only Tony Gonzalez, who holds the NFL record for receiving yards by a tight end with 15,127.
- In his Chiefs debut, Kenneth Walker III rushed for a career-high 173 yards, surpassing his previous high of 167 rushing yards against the Chargers on 10/23/22.
- Walker is now the first and only player in Kansas City Chiefs franchise history to record 150+ rushing yards, a 50+ yard rushing touchdown, and a receiving touchdown in the same game.
- Walker had 105 scrimmage yards in the first half, the most in any first half of his career.
- Walker had two rushes of 25+ yards on Monday night, which is already more than any Chiefs running back last season.
- Walker’s 173 rushing yards and 191 scrimmage yards are both the most by a running back in a game started by Patrick Mahomes.
- Walker outgained the entire Broncos offense Monday night, finishing with 191 scrimmage yards compared to Denver’s 176 net total yards.
- Walker generated +101 rushing yards over expected against the Broncos, the most by a Chiefs running back since at least 2018. Walker also forced 14 missed tackles, the most by any Chiefs player in a game over that span.
- Walker has the most rushing yards in a team debut since Michael Turner with the Falcons in 2008 (220).

Josh Taylor delivers honest verdict on if Conor Benn can ever win a world title after Ryan Garcia KO
Conor Benn came up short when challenging for the WBC welterweight title on Saturday and former undisputed light-welterweight champion Josh Taylor has now given his opinion on whether ‘The Destroyer’ can ever capture world honours.
Ryan Garcia made a first successful defence of the WBC title as he ran through Benn in just two rounds in Las Vegas, flooring the Briton with a prodigious right-hand and then stopping him on his feet.
Whilst Garcia now looks set for unifications after defeating his WBC mandatory challenger, fans are questioning where Benn can go from here and if he should remain at world level or drop down and attempt to get his hands on the British title.
In an interview with Seconds Out, Taylor admitted that the outcome of Benn’s world title bid was what he expected it to be, stating his belief that Benn is a domestic-level fighter.
“It was something that I kind of expected, really. I have said it for long enough and I have said it numerous times, I don’t think that Conor Benn is anywhere near world level.
“I know that I sound like I am being critical of him, but I am just saying what I think. I do think that he is domestic/European level at best.
“He is getting these fights and these opportunities because of the pull that he has got. He has got this commercial pull and he is getting opportunities off the back of that.”
‘The Tartan Tornado’ then went on to declare that he does not envisage Benn ever getting his hands on a world title, despite his fellow Briton being just 29 years old.
“I don’t think that he is any better than that [British/European level], I don’t think that he will win a world championship, but he has got massive appeal.”
Benn is set to move back up in weight following his first stoppage loss, with a big leap up to either middleweight or super-middleweight expected to be confirmed soon and possibly even a trilogy showdown with Chris Eubank Jr.

Courage comes in many forms. There’s the courage to risk your life and run into a burning building to save someone else’s life. There’s the courage to start your life anew when you’re unhappy. Just completely give up on your easy, comfortable existence to chase your passion and begin again.
And then there’s what I’m about to do. I’m about to leave Ohio State at No. 1 in my power ratings even though the Buckeyes lost to Texas on Saturday. I’m doing this even though I know that the majority of people who read this column, or see the rankings shared on social media without reading a single word I’ve written here, will not understand how power rankings work.
They will think these are the same thing as an opinion poll, and they will drag my name through the internet mud. They will curse me. They will call me stupid. They’ll probably call me ugly, too, just to be a little meaner than they need to be. Some may wish death upon me.
And all I have to do to avoid this undeserved punishment is move Ohio State down a couple of spots. But I will not! I have too much integrity! I will face the backlash, for I know I am right!
We must remember that power ratings are meant to predict future results, not to react to past results. So, yes, Ohio State blew a 20-point fourth-quarter lead against Texas on Saturday night, and the Buckeyes have lost three of their last four games. There are plenty of questions to ask Ryan Day and the Buckeyes about what’s going on and how they can fix things.
But you know what? There might not be much to fix. They lost the game, but their performance wasn’t horrible. In fact, their performance was better than Texas’ in a lot of the areas I look at. The Buckeyes outgained the Longhorns, averaged more yards per play, and had an edge in explosive plays. They also missed a 45-yard field goal with 4:16 left that proved rather consequential! If the kick is good, the Buckeyes probably win, and you’re yelling at me for not knocking Texas enough instead.
Now, you can argue that I should knock Ohio State’s rating down because it has a kicker who can’t be relied on, but all those numbers are already baked in, and guess what? Kickers miss field goals. We just focus on them more when they come in key spots.
So, anyway, that’s why I’m brave. Because I could’ve knocked Ohio State down a peg or two to avoid the backlash, but that would be dishonest, and I’m too courageous to be dishonest. No need to call me a hero, though I understand why you might be inclined to.

Former England footballer Raheem Sterling has admitted dangerous driving after he crashed a Lamborghini into motorway barriers in May.
The 31-year-old, from Berkshire, also admitted possessing nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation, and failing to provide a specimen for analysis.
Sterling, who appeared at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court, was arrested after crashing on the M3 in Hampshire on the morning of 28 May.
Sterling has 82 England caps, the last of which was won at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The former England winger pleaded guilty to driving a Lamborghini Urus dangerously on the M25, the M3, the A327 and Minley Road before he crashed.
He was in possession of six canisters of nitrous oxide, a Class C drug.

Zimbabwean wicketkeeper-batter Brendan Taylor has overtaken legendary India cricketer Sachin Tendulkar to become the holder of the longest ODI career in men’s cricket, according to Cricinfo. Taylor’s ODI career has now spanned 22 years and 148 days, surpassing Tendulkar’s 22 years and 91 days. The Zimbabwean achieved the feat after featuring in the first ODI of the ongoing three-match series against Australia in Harare on Tuesday.
Tendulkar has consequently slipped to second place on the list, while former Sri Lanka cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya occupies third spot with an ODI career spanning 21 years and 184 days.
Tendulkar, however, continues to hold the record for the most runs in ODI cricket, with 18,426, as well as the most appearances in the format, having played 463 matches.
Taylor, 40, made his ODI debut in April 2004 against Sri Lanka and went on to establish himself as one of Zimbabwe’s leading batters. Before Tuesday’s match, he had amassed 11 ODI centuries — a national record — in 207 appearances, with 6,704 runs to his name.
Taylor retired from international cricket in 2021. Four months later, in January 2022, he revealed that corruptors had attempted to lure him into fixing matches in 2019 by offering him cocaine and subsequently blackmailing him. Although Taylor stressed that he had never fixed a match, he admitted that he delayed reporting the approach to the ICC because he feared for his family’s safety, according to Cricinfo. He was eventually banned from all forms of cricket for three and a half years.
After completing his suspension, Taylor came out of retirement in 2025 as Zimbabwe began preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by Zimbabwe’s neighbours South Africa and Namibia.

In a way, the first round of the postseason started Monday night in Major League Baseball — no matter that just under two weeks remain in the regular season.
The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees clinched postseason berths, again, and the Chicago White Sox took a big step toward securing theirs after losing at least 100 games for three straight seasons.
The White Sox, who were swooning in September and had lost most of their lead in the American League Central, rebounded with an outsized 7-3 victory against the host Cleveland Guardians in the opener of a three-game series.
The tide turned when Tristan Peters survived an 18-pitch at-bat against Gavin Williams with two outs in the sixth inning. Peters walk sparked a six-run outburst that broke open a scoreless tie.
Instead of falling out of first place, the White Sox moved 1 1/2 games ahead with 12 to play. They also won the season series from the Guardians, along with the tiebreaker that comes with it. Chicago reduced its magic number to win the division to 10, and nine for a postseason spot.
After losing so many games in recent years, not to mention the two-week dive to open the month, the White Sox probably would take any kind of playoff spot. But they’d rather win the division and be the No. 2 seed in the American League because it comes with a first-round postseason bye.
The White Sox gave themselves about 24 hours to enjoy it, because they still could leave town in second place if the Guardians win the next two. And Cleveland might need to win to just make the postseason. The Guardians have a precarious lead on the final AL Wild Card spot: They’re one game up the Toronto Blue Jays, 1 1/2 on the Texas Rangers, and 2 1/2 on the Houston Astros (if they slide behind the Rangers in the AL West).
The Dodgers and Yankees joined the Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays in the postseason field.
After beating the host Cincinnati Reds 4-1 behind left-hander Tarik Skubal, the Dodgers popped postseason alcohol for the 14th straight season. Their run ties the Atlanta Braves record from 1991-2005 (although there were no playoffs in ’94 because of the players strike). The Dodgers also have a magic number of three to win the AL West.
Despite not having slugger Aaron Judge for a third of the season, the Yankees clinched the playoffs for the third straight year and for the ninth time in 10 seasons after beating the Minnesota Twins 8-3. Because you can’t mention the Yankees without the Boston Red Sox, they have a magic number of six to clinch a playoff spot as the third team from the AL East. They lead the Blue Jays, the first team outside of the field currently, by 7 1/2 games.
After doing a little swooning themselves to start September with a 5-7 record, the Cubs beat the Braves 7-3 to improve their potential postseason position.
The Cubs lead the NL Wild Card pack, but they’re even with the Philadelphia Phillies in the loss column and one game ahead of the San Diego Padres. The Arizona Diamondbacks lurk on the outside, 2 1/2 behind, though the Cubs hold the season-series tiebreaker there.
The Cubs also still have a chance, in the most nominal way, of winning the NL Central. But the Brewers have a magic number of two and could clinch Tuesday.
The Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins remain alive, but they’re nearly out of time.
At the bottom of the American League barrel, only the Athletics and Los Angeles Angels have been eliminated. Still! The Kansas City Royals, who are 66-84, could have their chances snuffed as soon as Wednesday. Everyone else probably survives (technically) into the final week of the regular season.

Former cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew predicts David Benavidez vs Jai Opetaia: “He can match his relentlessness”
Tony Bellew has offered his early thoughts on a potential showdown between David Benavidez and Jai Opetaia, who have verbally agreed to collide in 2027.
The ‘Mexican Monster’ was in attendance as Opetaia stopped Noel Mikaelian in nine rounds, featuring in the chief support to Ryan Garcia vs Conor Benn over the weekend.
Initially, the Australian had expected this to be a world title opportunity, only for WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman to not sanction their cruiserweight contest.
This decision can be explained by a number of factors, including Mikaelian’s failure to defend his belt against mandatory challenger Benavidez.
As a result, the 35-year-old has been stripped of his title with Michal Cieslak being upgraded to full champion. Cieslak is expected to make his first defence against Benavidez on December 12.
If Benavidez emerges victorious, the 29-year-old could then defend all three titles against Opetaia, who previously held the IBF strap and is now the Zuffa Boxing cruiserweight champion.
Regardless of the belts, though, their matchup is considered one of the best that can be made in boxing and both combatants, it seems, are eager to collide next year.
Speaking on the DAZN broadcast following Opetaia’s stoppage of Mikaelian, former cruiserweight champion Bellew expressed his excitement but admitted favouring Benavidez.
“There are ways both could win the fight, but I edge towards Benavidez. I just think he does not stop. He’s the only [cruiserweight] that can match Jai Opetaia’s relentlessness. He can take it to another level … Iron sharpens iron, I can’t wait to see this fight.”
Having previously held major titles at super-middle and light-heavyweight, Benavidez became a three-division world champion by dethroning Gilberto Ramirez with a sixth-round finish in May.

When Vince McMahon bought WCW, Jeff Jarrett launched TNA (Total Nonstop Action) a year later. In 2005, Kurt Angle’s WWE contract was up. He debuted in October and confronted Samoa Joe, one of the biggest stars in TNA. Angle arguably had his best matches there and rejuvenated his career.
The American Nightmare Returns to Finish His Story
Cody Rhodes launched All Elite Wrestling in 2019 with other pro wrestlers, a wrestling revolution not seen in decades. He couldn’t win the top prize because of a stipulation, and fans turned on him. At WrestleMania 38, Rhodes returned to WWE and took down Seth Rollins. It took Cody Rhodes two years to win the WWE title from Roman Reigns at WM 40, winning the belt his father never held.
WrestleMania 33 becomes BROKEN
The day before their return at WM 33, the Hardys competed in a tag title match at Ring of Honor, so fans didn’t see it coming. When New Day announced another competitor, the fans erupted once the Hardys appeared. Even better, they won the tag titles in the ladder match.
GOLDBERG, GOLDBERG, GOLDBERG
The acquisition of WCW by Vince McMahon didn’t live up to anyone’s expectations as the Invasion angle failed. The biggest stars had creative control and were collecting a paycheck at home. However, one WCW icon speared WWE’s top star out of his misery in his debut. Goldberg interrupted the Rock and said, ‘You’re Next’ before Dwayne sold his spear like a million bucks.
Dean Ambrose is ALL ELITE
Ambrose made it VERY clear how miserable he was at the end of his WWE run. When AEW aired its first PPV, Double or Nothing, the former SHIELD member made an impact immediately. Jon Moxley, his indy name, hit Chris Jericho with his finisher to disrupt the main event and became a pillar in All Elite Wrestling.
Put Some Respect on that Bank and Mone
Sasha Banks and Naomi walked out of Monday Night Raw after putting the women’s tag belts on John Laurinaitis’ desk. Banks was scripted to take the pin in a six-woman tag match and felt disrespected. Naomi returned to WWE after wrestling in TNA, but Banks made her mark as Mercedes Moné. Debuting as the ‘CEO’ in her hometown of Boston, Moné became the most decorated superstar in modern pro wrestling, having held over ten titles at the same time.
Sheamus and Illa Dragonuv are on the free agent market. The former has ties to AEW, while Dragonuv could go to NJPW (New Japan). One thing’s for sure: Bayley is staying put in WWE after costing Lyra Valkyria her MITB qualifying match. Her contract status is unknown, but she could reunite with Mercedes Moné in AEW in early 2027.

Sports Ministry constitutes task force for revival, development of Formula 1 in India | Racing News
NEW DELHI: The Sports Ministry has formed a task force led by NITI Ayog’s Yugal Kishore Joshi and to work on revival and development of Formula 1 and motorsports in India. The objective of the task force is to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the motorsports ecosystem in India and review the challenges, with taxation chief among them.The target for the task force is to find feasibility of hosting a Formula 1 race in India in 2028.The task force members include: Kunal, the Joint Secretary, Department of Sports; Joint Secretary, Department of Commerce; Joint Secretary, Ministry of Tourism; Representatives from CBIC & CBDT, Department of Revenue; Representatives from Uttar Pradesh & Maharashtra State Governments; Representatives from Buddh International Circuit (BIC) & Madras International Circuit (MIC); President/Secretary General, Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI); Technical Expert nominated by FMSCI and Any other member co-opted by the Chairperson based on requirement.The task force will hold the following responsibilities:– To identify policy interventions for the sustainable growth of motorsports in India and prepare a holistic and coordinated roadmap– To conduct a detailed assessment of India’s motorsports ecosystem and review the challenges (including taxation) associated with the revival and development of motorsport events– To assess the international, economic, tourism, and investment benefits of hosting major motorsport events in India, and to identify key priorities, infrastructure requirements, and operational needs for sustainable development– To provide recommendations for a comprehensive policy framework for motorsports, including the potential for Public-Private Partnership (PPP) models.India had last hosted a Formula 1 Grand Prix at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida in 2013.
