Residents of Hillam, around nine miles west of Selby, claim that the site in Betteras Hill Road began appearing late in the afternoon of Friday, September 11 and that “hardcore” has been laid down and “fences positioned”.

North Yorkshire Council said it served a temporary notice on Monday for works on the site to stop.

However, Hillam Parish Council said that that order had been breached in a public statement issued this week.

One concerned local, who did not want to provide their name, said the sudden arrival and scale of the site has caused considerable concern among the community.

Betteras Hill Road is single-track and connects the village to the A162 and is largely populated by fields with around 20 houses on its route, particularly close to the village.

North Yorkshire Council’s head of planning control, Martin Grainger, said: “We are aware that a Traveller site has recently been set up in Hillam without planning permission.

“On Monday we served a temporary stop notice which requires work on the site to cease.

“In addition, we are actively progressing further enforcement options.”

In a statement published on its Facebook page, Hillam Parish Council said North Yorkshire Council had provided this update: “A further site visit was undertaken yesterday afternoon at the land off Betteras Hill Road to assess compliance with the Temporary Stop Notice (TSN).

“During the visit, evidence was gathered which indicates that certain activities have continued on the site in breach of the TSN.

“This evidence will be reviewed in consultation with the Council’s Legal Services team to determine the most appropriate course of action in response to the apparent breaches.

“In addition, a further TSN has been served to ensure that all land affected by the unauthorised change of use and associated development is fully covered by the notice.

“The Planning Enforcement team is continuing to work closely with Legal Services to identify and implement measures to prevent any further unauthorised development from taking place.”

Nisan Fernando Kurukulasuriya has been jailed

A pervert who groped two teenagers on a bus was caught after exposing himself on a train. Nisan Fernando Kurukulasuriya, 39, sat next to a 17-year-old on a bus in Tameside on October 20 last year.

CCTV showed him putting his hand on her thigh. The girl, a court heard, believed it was a mistake and moved her leg, but Kurukulasuriya’s hand remained, Manchester Crown Court heard.

She asked him to move it. Kurukulasuryia said ‘okay’ before leaving his seat. Kurukulasuriya sat next to another girl, 16.

“He put his hand next to her leg, making her feel uncomfortable,” prosecutor Nicola Durham said. “She moved her leg and crossed her legs and faced away from the defendant.

“He then squeezed her bottom and inner thigh. She then saw the defendant running his hand up and down her leg.” The girl elbowed Kurukulasuriya before he said ‘different stop’. She took photo of him as he got off the bus.

Kurukulasuriya was later identified by DNA match following another incident at Manchester Piccadilly on April 20 this year.

The court heard that while on a train from Stoke to Manchester, Kurukulasuriya sat next to a woman and began to ‘caress her thigh’. She was on the phone to her children.

“She thought it was a mistake, and when she moved her leg, the defendant removed his hand and then proceeded to caress her thigh again,” Ms Durham said.

Kurukulasuriya then exposed himself. Ms Durham added: “This caused her to shout and the defendant got up and rushed away.” The woman alterted the train manager and Kurukulasuriya was arrested.

The 17-year-old girl said the incident made her feel ‘uncomfortable’ and more self aware. The 16-year-old said she felt ‘disgusted’ and that it gave her ‘the shivers’.

Lois Connelly, mitigating, said Kurukulasuriya had ‘some insight’ into his behaviour. “He is in agreement that nobody deserves to be sexually assaulted on public transport,” she added.

She said he had moved to the United Kingdom from Sri Lanka in 2022, with his wife and son remaining there. He originally moved here on a work visa, to be a fisherman in Scotland. “He is clearly not doing that,” Ms Connelly said.

The barrister said that he was drinking alcohol at the time and had been staying with a friend in Traffrd. “These are deeply concerning offences,” Judge Elizabeth Nicholls said. “You caused fear and distress to the women on public transport.”

Kurukulasuriya, of no fixed address, was jailed for a year and two months. He was made subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order with two conditions – he is prohibited from sitting next to females unknown to him on public transport; and cannot have unsupervised contact with a female under 18.

That order will last 10 years. He was ordered to sign the Sex Offender Register for a decade.

A billionaire stadium owner caught in controversy for threatening to cancel Ed Sheeran’s concerts unless opening act Macklemore was dropped has claimed the British star asked him to match a $2 million donation to the region.

Macklemore was dropped from Sheeran’s tour after he delivered a politically motivated speech in support of Palestine during his performances at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on September 4 and 5. 

Responding with an Instagram statement after it was confirmed he was leaving, the rapper claimed Sheeran told him that stadium owner Robert Kraft orchestrated the move, ‘issuing an ultimatum’ that the whole tour would be cancelled if Macklemore was not removed.

Kraft, the chief executive of the Kraft Group, which owns Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts, yesterday issued his own statement on the controversy.

‘I have dedicated much of my life to building bridges between all people. I believe deeply that all lives are worth protecting,’ the statement posted on Gillette Stadium’s account read.

‘Earlier today, before Macklemore challenged me to match his donation, Ed called me and asked me to commit $2 million to match his donation to aid in the region to fight this humanitarian crisis.

‘In addition, I’d like the people who are speaking in support of the Palestinian people to know that for decades, I have supported efforts that create opportunities for Palestinians and have brought young Palestinians and Israelis together to build businesses, create jobs and forge relationships.’

Sheeran also previously commented on the situation, reminding fans he would never publicly take a political stance.

Writing on Instagram, he said: ‘I am not complicit. I have my personal views on this devastating conflict. Just because I choose not to speak publicly, it doesn’t mean I don’t have them, and it doesn’t mean I don’t care.

‘There is a reason I do not use my professional platform for politics – my audience includes young people, often children, of all backgrounds. Those who come to my shows do not expect a political forum.’

He added that although he respects Macklemore’s ‘strength of purpose to stand up and shout for what he believes’, there are different approaches to advocating for peace.

 It comes as images have resurfaced showing Macklemore wearing an oversized prosthetic nose, a black beard and a shaggy black wig during a 2014 performance in Seattle.

The costume was criticised for resembling an anti-Semitic caricature of a Jewish man. Macklemore apologised at the time, saying he had no malicious intention and was unaware that the costume resembled a Jewish stereotype.

People have accused Macklemore’s pro-Palestinian activism of being part of something more sinister, pointing to his controversial costume and a circulating image that appears to show him making a Nazi salute while dressed in it. 

He has not replied to the claims made about the image, and many online say it was a photo taken mid-dance that has been misconstrued.   

Meanwhile, Greta Thunberg, a staunch pro-Palestine activist who was detained twice after travelling on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla, has publicly backed Sheeran’s ‘cancellation’, criticising him in a statement shared online. 

Taking to her Instagram on Tuesday, Thunberg said: ‘We are witnessing one of the biggest artists in the world being cancelled because they tried to “both sides” Israel’s genocide against the Palestinian people.  

‘This is a clear and undeniable sign that the global consciousness has shifted. The normalisation of an apartheid state, and the attempts to sanitise or justify its actions, will no longer be tolerated. Ed, there is only one victim here: the Palestinian people.’

And on Thursday morning, Irish radio station Classic Hits Radio announced it would be removing Sheeran’s music from its playlist ‘for the foreseeable future’.

Dave Kelly, Group Programme Director at Bay Broadcasting, said the move had been ‘carefully considered’ and was ‘not intended as a personal judgement on Ed Sheeran’.

He said: ‘We acknowledge his own explanation of the circumstances surrounding recent events.

‘As an independent Irish-owned radio station, however, we believe it is important to listen to our audience and to stand alongside Irish artists who have made what is undoubtedly a significant professional decision based on their own convictions.

After the news of Macklemore’s departure, all of Sheeran’s remaining support acts also stepped away from the tour.

American singer Finneas wrote: ‘Artists must not be silenced when they speak up for the oppressed. I have decided to withdraw from my upcoming tour dates with Ed Sheeran. I stand with Palestine and its people.’

Irish performer Aaron Rowe took a strong stance as he wrote: ‘Ed has been a friend to me and has changed my life. I could never thank him enough for this. But as Irish people, we know all too well about genocide, forced famine and violent occupation.’

He continued by saying he ‘cannot stand by and allow billionaires to use their position of power to silence the rightful voices of those who speak up’.

Danish band Lukas Graham said: ‘We should be able to speak about war, about civilians being killed, about children who deserve to grow up. Wherever they live. Whatever flag flies over them.’

Irish band Beoga, who joined Sheeran for eight songs including Galway Girl, also revealed that they are removing themselves from the tour.

They wrote: ‘We have been friends with Ed for over ten years now and will continue to be.

‘Playing to those crowds every night is the stuff of dreams but to play in venues that silence anyone advocating for a Free Palestine is simply not an option for us.’

Beoga added that Macklemore had been silenced by ‘Zionist lobbies’ and that the group believed in ‘dialogue as a means of progressing the plight of the Palestinian people’. 

The vans were deployed in Bolton town centre on Wednesday, September 17, as part of Operation Avro, and officers made arrests during the activity.

Police said the facial recognition operation was one of their busiest in a while.

Chief Superintendent Helen Critchley, Bolton district commander, said: “As part of Operation Avro today we have got the live facial recognition banner in the town centre.

“This is nothing for people to be concerned about; this is just an opportunity for us to identify people who might be wanted, subjects of orders and breaching those orders.”

Two arrests were made at the van, while 19 arrests were reported across the wider operation.

The technology was used to identify people who were wanted, or who were subject to court orders they may have breached.

Images of people who were not wanted or in breach of an order would not be retained, she said.

Chief Superintendent Helen Critchley said: “If you’re not wanted, if you’re not a subject of an order and in breach, you’ve got nothing to worry about, your images won’t be retained.”

The vans left the town centre at about 2.27pm.

Police also reported 13 successful warrants, 12 vehicles seized, and 39 shotgun cartridges and a machete recovered.

Two cannabis farms were confirmed during the operation.

Earlier, officers found cannabis plants during searches of properties in Breightmet and Highfields.

The wider activity also included a traffic operation on Manchester Road.

A total of 124 vehicles were stopped from 8am.

Mike Jennings-Wharton, Chief Inspector for Bolton, said: “Today we’ve had a really successful day right across the borough of Bolton under Operation Avro.

“It’s a really good use of technology, where faces are scanned, and the image is destroyed. But if you are wanted, we will find you.

“We did actually find some wanted people today. Someone wanted on warrant for drug supply. Someone wanted for criminal offences.

“It also allowed us to get our hands into the pockets of people involved in criminality and stopping our sex offenders within the town centre.”

Officers found offences involving mobile phones and seatbelts.

Police said the operation followed concerns raised by local residents and involved several partner agencies.

The family of Nicholas Brandram have insisted there was no ‘credible’ evidence of him being the ‘Putney Pusher’ and said he ‘took his own life after months of immense pressure caused by the Metropolitan Police investigation’.

His relatives claimed there was no forensic evidence linking the 44-year-old banker to the 2017 incident in which a jogger shoved a woman headfirst into the path of an oncoming bus on Putney Bridge in south-west London. 

Mr Brandram was arrested in June before being released under investigation earlier this month. He was found dead on Tuesday.  

In a statement, his family said: ‘There was no forensic evidence linking Nick to it, no evidence placing him on Putney Bridge at that time, and no credible evidence that he was the man shown in the footage. In fact, the evidence proved the opposite.

‘Despite that, the police chose to arrest Nick rather than invite him to attend for interview. They searched his home and the Met Police press team then released information which inevitably led to speculation and Nick being identified in subsequent reporting.’

The family added: ‘For Nick, the consequences did not disappear. He was left for months carrying the stigma of an appalling allegation which the police themselves clearly recognised was unsupported by the evidence.

‘He lived with the shame, anxiety, humiliation and extraordinary pressure created by a wholly unnecessary investigation.’

They said the police were repeatedly asked to end their probe and warned about the impact it was having on Mr Brandram’s mental health, saying: ‘Even then, the investigation was not brought to an end. As a result, Nick is dead.’

After his arrest, police searched his £1.4million house in Chiswick, west London, and subsequently rearrested him for possession of Class A and Class B drugs – believed to be cocaine and cannabis.

The former Army officer was found dead there at 7.15pm on Tuesday.

Mr Brandram – a grandson of Princess Katherine of Greece and Denmark, who was the great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria – was a director at HSBC’s private bank before being suspended after his arrest. 

Following the Brandram family statement, Chief Superintendent Dan Knowles – in charge of policing for south-west London – said the investigation ‘remains ongoing’.

‘Our thoughts are with Mr Brandram’s family and friends at this deeply distressing time,’ he said. 

‘We recognise the significant impact his death will have on those who knew and loved him. We also understand the strain that being subject to a police investigation can place on individuals and their families.

‘The investigation remains ongoing. Following Mr Brandram’s release under investigation, it was made clear that enquiries would continue while officers progressed outstanding lines of enquiry and forensic examinations. This remains the position, and further investigative work is ongoing.

‘Investigations of this nature, particularly those involving complex evidential and forensic work, can take a number of months to complete as officers gather and assess all available evidence.’

The Met has referred itself to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC), as is required when someone dies following contact with police. 

An IOPC spokesman said: ‘We have received a mandatory referral from the Met Police relating to prior contact officers had with Nicholas Brandram, who was sadly found unresponsive and declared deceased on 15 September.’

Yesterday a Met spokesman said officers and ambulance staff were called to Mr Brandram’s property at 7.15pm on Tuesday. 

‘Sadly, a 44-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene,’ added the spokesman. ‘His next-of-kin have been informed. At this time his death is being treated as unexpected, but is not believed to be suspicious.’

Mr Brandram, who had been married twice and has a three-year-old child, was a decorated former British Army captain who served with the Scots Guards in Iraq, Bosnia and Afghanistan. In 2012, the Newcastle University philosophy and psychology graduate was awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of his military service.

A year later, he appeared at City of London Magistrates’ Court after colliding with a female cyclist on Hyde Park Corner on March 6 of that year. 

Mr Brandram crashed his 1948 Harley-Davidson into the woman and then drove off without leaving his details or checking if she was hurt, the court heard. 

Representing himself, he told magistrates: ‘I ride a bicycle myself and realise the risks.

‘I’m an upstanding member of society and have recently resigned as a member of the British Army and have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

‘I have a very loud bike so it’s not impossible I collided with her without me realising it. At the same time with such a big bike I don’t know how I didn’t feel the collision.’

He pleaded guilty to a count each of driving without due care and attention and of failing to stop after a road accident. 

He received five penalty points, a £200 fine and was told to pay £105 compensation. Mr Brandram thanked magistrates and said he would pay the fine immediately. 

The Putney Pusher incident took place during rush hour on May 5, 2017 at about 7.40am. A woman was walking southwards on Putney Bridge when the jogger approached her from the opposite direction.

There was plenty of room on the footpath for him to run around her safely, but instead he shoved her onto the road – directly in the path of an incoming 430 bus going at 12mph.

Thanks to the rapid reactions of the driver, Oliver Salbris, the bus missed the 33-year-old victim’s head by inches, and she survived largely physically unscathed. 

The jogger continued his run across Putney Bridge without so much as a backward glance.

After the vehicle stopped, passers-by rushed to help the shaken woman – who has never been publicly identified.

The jogger returned in the opposite direction about 15 minutes later, passing the victim again while she was still being assisted on the bridge. He ignored her calls to stop.

In April, Mr Salbris told the Daily Mail that he would never forget what he saw.

‘I always think about the case and I still drive over Putney Bridge several times a day,’ he said.

‘Whenever I’m on the bridge, I look very carefully at the pedestrians on the pavement, I just can’t help it. I wouldn’t say it haunts me, but it’s not something I can easily forget.

‘I’m glad my reactions were quick on that day, or it would have ended very differently, both for me and the woman who was pushed. Her head was only a few centimetres from the bus and the wheel, even after I swerved to avoid her.’

At the time of the original appeal, the suspect was described as a white man in his early to mid-30s, with a stocky build and short brown hair. He was wearing a grey T-shirt and dark blue shorts.

Metropolitan Police detectives interviewed 50 men and arrested three suspects, including an American investment banker – who was able to prove ‘irrefutably’ that he was in the US at the time.

No suspect was ever charged, and the investigation was closed in 2018 before new information led to Mr Brandram’s arrest. 

Earlier this month, he was released under investigation to give police time to complete outstanding enquiries. 

The Met said at the time: ‘On Monday, June 15, a 44-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm. 

‘The arrest relates to an incident on May 5, 2017, where a woman was pushed into the path of a bus on Putney Bridge in Putney.

‘Once in police custody, he was also arrested on suspicion of possession of Class A and Class B drugs.

‘He has since been released under investigation while enquiries continue.’

Mr Brandram’s late father, City executive Paul Brandram, was the only child of Princess Katherine of Greece and Denmark and Major Richard Campbell Andrew Brandram, who served with the British Army during the Second World War.

Princess Katherine was Queen Victoria‘s great-granddaughter, a first cousin of Prince Philip, and the daughter of King Constantine I, who ruled Greece from 1913 to 1917 and from 1920 to 1922.

Queen Sofia of Spain, Paul Brandram’s cousin, told of her ‘great sadness’ after his death in 2020 at the age of 72. 

Like his father, Nicholas has had a successful career in the City, working at leading stockbrokers Killik & Co and Israeli lender Bank Leumi before moving to HSBC, where he managed the assets of wealthy individuals.

In a ’60 second’ interview for the Citywealth Leaders List in March, he described his pastimes as ‘gardening, opera and Frederick Forsyth novels’. 

Describing his daily routine, he said: ‘I usually bicycle into our office in Mayfair from my home in west London. And then from there, can either stay at my desk, go to Canary Wharf or the City, or get on a train or go to the airport. 

‘My first meeting is ideally over breakfast and I’m ideally home for bath time. I’m a co-parenting single father with a three-year-old.’

Mr Brandram said his proudest professional achievement was being invited to a Buckingham Palace garden party after serving in Afghanistan, and that the person he most admired was his mother. 

‘She raised three children as a single parent and is the busiest person I know,’ he said. 

‘I’ve never met someone with greater moral integrity and courage, as well as resilience and stamina.’

He was nominated Private Banker of the Year for 2026. 

Emergency services were called to the junction of Haughton Green and Haughton Road just before 6.46am on Thursday (September 17).

The motorcyclist was taken to hospital with what are believed to be “minor injuries”.

A spokesperson from Durham Police said: “We were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving a car and a motorbike just before 6.45am this morning.

“The motorcyclist was taken to hospital with what are believed to be minor injuries to his back.

“No one else was injured.”

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 6.39am on Thursday, September 17 to reports of a road traffic incident on the junction of Haughton Green and Haughton Road in Darlington.

 “We dispatched an ambulance crew to the scene and transported one patient to Darlington Memorial Hospital for further treatment.”

Patrick Clancy says he has tried to find solace by talking to his dead children in his first interview since his ex-wife Lindsay’s mistrial. 

The grieving father, 38, told 60 Minutes that he appeals to his late children for comfort in a sit down with Ross Douthat which will air on Sunday.

Asked what he tells his deceased children Cora, five, Dawson, three, and eight-month-old Callan, Patrick said: ‘”Help me”… All the time.’

Lindsay Clancy‘s murder trial collapsed earlier this month after the jury deadlocked 11-1, with one holdout juror refusing to find her not guilty by reason of insanity.

Patrick’s interview comes after he faced a barrage of sickening threats and accusations by online sleuths during the trial, with some even alleging he was responsible for his children’s deaths. 

In a statement through his lawyer after the mistrial, Patrick promised ‘consequences’ for true crime creators who made the baseless and cruel allegations.

‘Over the past months, Patrick Clancy and his family have been subjected to a relentless, escalating and destructive defamation campaign,’ the statement read.

‘This campaign of misinformation has been launched and promoted by minor celebrities, so-called influencers and outright conspiracy theorists who appear intent on boosting their own social media profiles and potential profit by publishing what they know to be outright falsehoods that Patrick was somehow involved in the death of his young children and other vile claims.’

After Lindsay’s high-profile murder trial ended in a deadlock, prosecutors are yet to say if they intend to re-try her for murder or offer her a plea deal. 

This week, it was revealed that she has hired one of the attorneys who worked with acquitted accused killer Karen Read, as she seeks to have her murder case dismissed.

Lindsay hired veteran Boston defense attorney Martin Weinberg to argue the case should be dismissed on the grounds of double jeopardy and ‘related matters,’ a Plymouth Superior Court filing on Tuesday revealed.

Double jeopardy refers to a Fifth Amendment right protected by the Constitution that states no person shall be punished for the same crime twice after being found innocent or guilty.

It is unclear whether a dismissal on double jeopardy grounds will work for Lindsay since her first trial ended in a hung jury and no verdict was reached.

The change that has caused frustration among film fans is that customers are no longer able to book tickets for fellow Unlimited members.

Instead, anyone paying for the monthly subscription can only book a ticket for themselves, meaning they will need to change their seats once tickets have been booked if they want to sit next to another Unlimited member.

A message shared with Cineworld customers said: “You will no longer be able to book tickets for family members or friends who also have an Unlimited membership.

“Each Unlimited member will need to book their own tickets.

“Our Unlimited Terms will be updated to reflect this change.”

People shared their frustration across social media, including on X, where one person said: “Dear @cineworld my son is disabled and has an unlimited card.

“How am I meant to book tickets for him online?

“Why have you changed a good system and replaced it with this.

“The person who came up this needs sacking.”

Someone else said they want the system to return to how it was previously: “@cineworld please tell me this is something you can reverse.

“It’s going to be a nightmare for people trying to book shows with friends & families and being able to ensure you can get seats together.

“Not quite sure how this is a smoother booking experience.”

This person commented: “The new update to the @cineworld app is so awful it’s upset me enough to start posting on this app again”.

Adding: “I’ve been thinking of cancelling my unlimited for a while and I think this has swung it :(”.

Cineworld customers start petition to reverse Unlimited ticket booking change

Unhappy with the change to the membership, some Cineworld customers have signed a petition which calls for it to be reversed.

The petition, titled “Restore booking privileges for Cineworld Unlimited members”, has been signed 230 times at the time of writing.

It was started by Simon Cooke on Change.org and includes details of the impact the Cineworld change is having on customers: “Unfortunately, this feature has been revoked, and it has deeply affected our cultural and social outings.

“For many Unlimited members like myself, the joy of sharing these cinematic experiences with loved ones has been significantly curtailed.

“It’s not just about watching films; it’s about connecting, sharing emotions and creating memories with those who matter most to us.

“Cineworld’s decision to remove this feature may seem minor to some but it deeply impacts the way we socialize and celebrate art.

“In an era where digital connections often outweigh personal interactions, gatherings at the movie theatre are one of the few opportunities to foster genuine, shared experiences.”

Cooke added: “We urge Cineworld to reconsider and reinstate this vital component of the Unlimited card.

“By doing so, they would be acknowledging the community aspect of film watching and fostering relationships, which is fundamental to their identity as an entertainment provider.”

The cinema chain said it is “working on an improved solution” to allow Unlimited members to book in groups in the future.

A Cineworld spokesperson told Newsquest: “As communicated to our Unlimited customers, Cineworld is launching a new and improved mobile-first website and app for our customers.

“The change has been introduced as part of the wider evolution of our booking platforms.

Police said they had followed more than 4,000 lines of inquiry, taken more than 300 statements and carried out detailed searches at more than 10 addresses and on numerous vessels.

Det Ch Insp Toby Elcock, from the Major Crime Team, said: “While this tragic discovery is not the outcome Joanne’s family, or any of us, had hoped for, we hope the identification of her remains can at least begin to provide some answers after many years of uncertainty.

“Throughout this investigation, Joanne’s family have shown tremendous strength and dignity in the face of unimaginable circumstances, and our thoughts remain with them at this incredibly difficult time.

“As our investigation progresses, we remain committed to establishing exactly what happened to Joanne and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable.”

He stressed that the police would still like to hear from anyone with information about Sheen’s disappearance.
