'Terrified' dog left abandoned in Stanley, County Durham

Wardens from the council were called to the address following reports of what was initially believed to be a stray dog.

However, the wardens said it was “clear from the moment the wardens arrived that this poor girl had been deliberately left and was terrified”.

In a statement, the wardens said the dog had been “abandoned alone in the yard” and described her as “petrified, confused, and scared” when they first approached her.

They added that it was “not a standard stray dog incident” and said the animal showed clear signs of distress.

Following the incident, the council wardens took to social media to issue an emotional message and a plea to other dog owners.

The post said: “With patience, kindness, and reassurance from the wardens, she slowly allowed them to stroke her and safely get her into a warm van.”

The dog has since been transferred into the care of the RSPCA, where she will receive ongoing care and support.

Durham County Council also issued a warning to pet owners, saying: “Abandoning an animal is never acceptable. Dogs are loyal, loving companions who depend on us entirely.”

The post described the rescue as a “stark reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership” and praised the actions of the officers involved.

It concluded by thanking “Neighbourhood Wardens 27 and 76 for their compassion and professionalism in such a distressing situation”.
