Britney Spears’ Family ‘Appalled’ By ‘Cruel’ Remark About Her Dad
Britney Spears recently made a remark in a since-deleted Instagram post about her estranged father, Jamie Spears, which has reportedly upset her family.
The comment was featured in a message about the lack of freedom she says she experienced during the nearly 14 years she was under a conservatorship, which officially ended on November 12, 2021.
Britney Spears’ unresolved issues with her father over her conservatorship have now come up again as sources claim the singer’s relatives are “appalled” by the perceived attack on Jamie when he’s sick.

Britney, 44, made the “needlessly cruel” comment while sharing a post celebrating the birthdays of her sons Jayden James Federline, 20, and Sean Preston Federline, 21, who were born September 12 and September 14, respectively.
According to reports, in the now-deleted post, Britney recalled her experience under the conservatorship, particularly the restrictions put on her movements because of it.
Britney wrote, “For 15 years I was never allowed to say my name in the land of the free and travel spontaneously,” adding that she was only able to travel for work for her parents.
The “Toxic” singer then made the remark that has reportedly riled up her family. She said, “I wonder why God took my father’s legs away?”
Her comment referenced her father, who had his right leg amputated in 2023 because of a bacterial infection that persisted despite multiple surgeries and weeks in the hospital.
Why The Family Is Upset With The Singer

A source shared with Star Magazine that members of the Spears family were unhappy about her publicly dragging her sick father.
“This is being seen as needlessly cruel by her poor family, not to mention Jamie, who is in very poor health as it is,” the source told the outlet.
Jamie is said to have “given up” on the singer ever letting go of her resentment towards him and has accepted that there is no fixing their relationship.
The insider added that Britney lashing out at her father “this publicly with so much rage” remains difficult for him as well as other relatives.
Lynn Spears, the singer’s mother, and her siblings Jamie Lynn Spears and Bryan Spears were described as being “appalled” that she would so openly criticize her father while he is dealing with ill health.
For Britney, however, she believes, as per the source, that she has “every right to call him out after the hell he put her through.”
About Britney Spears’ Conservatorship Struggle

Britney’s comment and general feelings about her father come after the 13 years of conservatorship that restricted her movements and governed her personal and financial affairs.
The arrangement began in 2008 after a public breakdown and saw her father exercise some authority over Britney’s estate and personal affairs.
She has reportedly described her time spent under her father’s control as conservator of her estate as traumatic, while he insisted he only did what was best for his daughter.
According to The Blast, Jamie was removed as her conservator in September 2021, and the conservatorship itself was terminated by a judge two months later in November, ending a legal arrangement that prompted the #FreeBritney movement.
The Singer Wrote About Her Conservatorship Experience In Her Memoir

Britney candidly wrote about her experiences during her conservatorship in her 2023 memoir, “The Woman in Me.”
In the book, the singer detailed how she felt having her father and others exercise control over her life as they “robbed” her of her freedom.
“Thirteen years went by with me feeling like a shadow of myself. I think back now on my father and his associates having control over my body and my money for that long, and it makes me feel sick,” she wrote.
Her latest Instagram comment targeting her father appears to be fallout from 13 years of being in a situation that she says stripped her “of [her] womanhood.”
The Relationship Between Britney Spears And Her Father Remains Sour

Britney and her father continued to get further estranged through legal disputes over legal fees associated with the conservatorship battle.
People Magazine reported that the dispute was settled more than two years after the conservatorship was terminated, with Britney paying $2.12 million in full for Jamie’s legal bills.
While the conservatorship and subsequent legal dispute ended, their estrangement and Britney’s resentment did not.
She is reportedly still “scarred from the conservatorship” and blames her father for it “a thousand percent.”
According to the Star source, she believes Jamie took away years of her life, and “She is very angry, and she doesn’t care who knows it.”

The SDR Show Cracks Top 20 On iHeartRadio’s Comedy Chart
The SDR Show just notched one of its biggest visibility wins in its long run, climbing into the top 20 on iHeartRadio’s Comedy chart this week while also earning a feature placement on the platform’s front page. For a show that has been grinding out twice-weekly episodes for more than a decade, the timing lines up with a genuine moment of momentum for hosts Ralph Sutton and Aaron Berg.
Why A Spot On iHeart’s Front Page Actually Means Something
iHeartRadio isn’t a niche corner of the podcast world. The platform’s owned network alone reached roughly 55.7 million unique monthly listeners across nearly 940 shows as of this past July, according to Podtrac data, and the company has built its base to well over 100 million registered users over the years. Its weekly Top 100 podcast chart updates every Monday and functions as one of the clearest signals of what audiences are actually pressing play on that week, out of a catalog that runs into the tens of thousands of active shows across the broader network.

Getting an editorial front page placement on top of a chart position is a different kind of win than an algorithmic recommendation. It means someone on iHeart’s programming side looked at The SDR Show and decided it belonged in front of listeners who weren’t already searching for it, casual browsers, people scrolling for something new, longtime iHeart users who’ve never heard of Sutton or Berg. That’s discovery reach a show can’t buy its way into. For a podcast built around raw, unscripted conversation rather than a big media brand behind it, landing in that spot is a real vote of confidence in the show’s staying power and its ability to still pull in new listeners after all these years.
A Decade-Plus Run Built On Unfiltered Conversation
The SDR Show, short for Sex, Drugs & Rock N Roll, launched with modest beginnings back around 2013 to 2014, pulling in roughly 6,000 downloads in its first month and cracking the New & Noteworthy list at number six. By March 2015, it had already climbed to the top of iTunes’ comedy charts, an early sign that the format- blunt, funny, no-filter conversations with musicians, comedians, adult performers, and anyone with a wild story- had real staying power.
Ralph Sutton, who has previously spent more than a decade hosting the nationally syndicated rock radio show The Tour Bus, has been the constant behind the mic since day one. His co-host chair has changed hands over the years, first shared with comedian Big Jay Oakerson, later with Dov Davidoff, and now with Aaron Berg, who officially stepped into the role after Sutton made the call himself. The show has since grown into a fixture of GaS Digital Network, the New York-based podcast network founded in 2016 that now produces around 20 shows reaching an estimated five million monthly listeners.

Across more than 750 episodes, the show has hosted an unusually wide range of guests, from musicians like Gene Simmons and Peter Frampton to comedians like Ray Romano and Pete Davidson, and even names outside entertainment entirely, including Mark Cuban and Neil deGrasse Tyson. That guest list is part of why the show has picked up mentions over the years from outlets like Loudwire, NME, and Entrepreneur Magazine.
Recent Buzz Has Been Building
The show’s latest chapter with Aaron Berg has generated its own wave of coverage. Sutton announced the hire directly, joking that Berg was his first call but initially turned it down before coming around. Berg brings his own following into the mix, an established New York comedy circuit veteran with acting credits including The Boondock Saints 2 and Detroit Rock City, six stand-up albums, and a career as an author, all of which give the show a fresh comedic voice alongside Sutton’s rock radio pedigree.
Combine that host transition with a catalog that’s still releasing new episodes twice a week, most recently digging into the formation story behind the band The Paradox, and it’s clear the show has kept its foot on the gas rather than coasting on its history.
What This Moment Signals Going Forward
A top 20 chart position and a front page feature on a platform this size isn’t a fluke for a show with this kind of track record. It’s a reflection of a decade-plus of consistency finally getting matched with the kind of platform-level exposure that can introduce The SDR Show to an entirely new audience, right as it heads into a new era with Berg behind the mic.

Narnia Officially Returns for 2026 Release Ahead of Netflix Reboot
Fantasy stories have long held a special place in popular culture. Their sprawling magical worlds, mythical creatures, heroes, and epic battles give audiences an escape into captivating worlds where their imaginations come alive. Franchises like Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, and George R.R. Martin‘s A Song of Ice and Fire have created some of the most memorable fantasy worlds in literature. With their rich worlds and endless storytelling possibilities, fantasy has continued to evolve, giving newer generations fresh takes on beloved classics. Fantasy lovers are particularly in for a treat in the not-too-distant future as several classics are getting new reimaginings. Among them is an underrated yet beloved title getting a Netflix reboot.
One of the greatest fantasy book masterpieces making a comeback in live action is The Chronicles of Narnia. The reboot series has been gaining buzz for a while now, and recently, an exclusive first look at two of its mythical characters, Aslan and Jadis, was unveiled. The reboot is being written and directed by Greta Gerwig (Barbie), who will take audiences back to the world of Narnia by adapting the first chronological book in the series, The Magician’s Nephew. The movie is slated to release in theaters first on February 12, 2027, before heading to its streaming home on Netflix on April 2. As the date draws near, Disney and Walden Media are giving audiences a brand-new release to mark its return.
The Chronicles of Narnia trilogy is getting a brand-new Blu-ray release. Per Blu-ray.com, the release will include all three films in the franchise: The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005), along with its sequels, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008) and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010). The offering comes in a 3-disc set, with one disc for each movie. As usual, the release will include bonus features, including never-before-seen deleted scenes, audio commentaries, and featurettes. The new set is currently available for pre-order and will hit shelves on October 6, 2026, giving fans a chance to own the original trilogy before the new era arrives.
What Else Do We Know About ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ Reboot?
Though Gerwig’s Narnia reboot will tell the first chronological story in this fantasy world, it will technically serve as the fourth installment in the franchise. The movie is, however, being positioned as a reboot of the franchise following the disappointing performance of the third film, which grossed less than the first two movies. Gerwig’s deal with Netflix reportedly includes a two-movie deal and a TV adaptation, though plans beyond the reboot have yet to be revealed and could perhaps depend on the success of the first movie.
Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew will feature a star-studded lineup, including Meryl Streep, who will voice Aslan, the Christ-like figure who was previously voiced by Liam Neeson. The gender swap has sparked some controversy among fans, with Gerwig defending her decision and explaining that she wanted “someone who could communicate depth and pathos as well as joy and delight.” The movie also stars Emma Mackey as the White Witch, alongside Carey Mulligan, Daniel Craig, Ciarán Hinds, Susan Wokoma, and others. Stay tuned for future updates.

Julia Stiles Earns Major Apology From Julliard After ‘DWTS’ Debut
Julia Stiles may have just danced her way into an apology from Juilliard School following her “Dancing with the Stars” debut.
“Save the Last Dance” is one of the 45-year-old’s most notable films, in which she plays Sara Johnson, a talented young ballerina whose primary life ambition is to get accepted into Juilliard.
However, Stiles’s appearance on the show was met with different reactions online, centering on the actress’s skills, including a reaction from the prestigious school.

After the institution was called out for a previous post, Juilliard took a hilarious turn in the best way possible.
They sent Stiles and her professional partner, Ezra Sosa, alumni gear and a lovely message, which the actress shared on Instagram.
“Dear Julia, with our apologies for the clerical error, your alumni file was found under the name Sara Johnson,” the note read. “We are so proud of you and cheering you and Ezra on.”
The message also had a playful nod to her memorable role: “Remember, “Dancing with the Stars” ain’t no square dance, but we know you’ll dance circles, probably, around everyone else.”
Stiles happily showed off the alumni gear, gushing over how cute the gesture was. “They know I love a crop top,” she said, holding up a shirt, a nod to her iconic 90’s style.
The school reiterated they meant no shade at the actress in their previous post. Stiles also clarified, “Never went to Juilliard; it’s a fictional character, Sara Johnson.”
Juilliard Showed Support For Julia Stiles Ahead Of ‘DWTS’ Premiere
This move comes in response to a post shared by Juilliard featuring the actress in a blue dress with the caption, “Checks registrar* No, Julia Stiles did not, in fact, attend Juilliard. But we love her anyway.”
They then went on to promote their upcoming fall festival before wishing Stiles good luck on “Dancing with the Stars,” writing, “We’re cheering you on!”
The Blast reported that while Stiles expressed gratitude in the post comment section, some fans lightheartedly called the school out. “But did you check her alter ego Sara Johnson? We have video proof she unofficially got in.”
“She definitely got into Juilliard…,” another fan joked. “Just can’t say it on record,” with yet another commenting, “Now Juilliard is LYING wooowowwww. We all saw her dance to get in, bestie.”
Julia Stiles Joined A TikTok Trend To Dispel Dancing Rumors

Stiles’ character might be a professionally trained ballerina who studied at Juilliard, but the actress herself is far from that. Joining a TikTok Yep/Nope challenge with Sosa, Stiles had a few things to say about viral misinformation.
In the video, she revealed that while she got some training for the movie, she had no prior training and has not had any other training since the film’s release in 2001, per The Blast.
Another shocking revelation was that the actress had a body double for a lot of the more challenging scenes in the movie, letting fans know that her moves were not as top-notch as they might have previously thought.
Julia Stiles Stuck It To Rival Andy Cohen With Dazzling ‘DWTS’ Performance

However, if her latest performance is anything to go by, the “10 Things I Hate About You” actress might be too humble about the extent of her skills.
During the premiere, Stiles and Sosa performed an outstanding quickstep, scoring 18 out of 30 and placing on the leaderboard in the competition.
“Andy Cohen, you can eat it,” judge Derek Hough declared after they were done, referring to the TV host’s previous comments on Stiles, saying she was not the greatest dancer on the planet.
The Blast reported that in her intro package, the actress said the quote was ingrained in her head and was stated as one of the reasons she chose to return to the ballroom floor.
Julia Stiles Said Dolly Parton Approved ‘DWTS’ Song

Stiles and Sosa’s quickstep was done to Dolly Parton’s song, “9 to 5,” and the actress confirmed Parton gave her permission to use it just before her passing, according to USA Today.
“It was only a couple weeks before Dolly passed that she approved this song specifically for me,” Stiles revealed during the intro package.
“I’m so honored to be dancing to her music and honoring her legacy, and I want to make her proud,” she concluded.

Ms. Rachel Stands Firm On Palestine Support
Ms. Rachel is opening up about the backlash she faced after publicly supporting Palestine.
The children’s educator, whose real name is Rachel Anne Accurso, has been an outspoken supporter of the war-torn region since 2023.
In a new interview, she revealed that she is still coming to terms with the criticism but has no plans to stop advocating for the causes she believes in.
In late 2023, after seeing videos of Palestinian children watching episodes of “Ms. Rachel,” Accurso was confronted with the reality of what those children were going through.
Since then, she has repeatedly spoken out against the war in Palestine, particularly the killing of children in the region. Her advocacy has drawn significant backlash.
However, reflecting on everything that has happened, the children’s educator recently revealed that she remains committed to speaking up.
“I wouldn’t change anything,” she revealed during a sit-down with Rolling Stone. “I’m going to stand with them no matter what…People on the ground in Gaza are risking their lives all the time to help kids. I can do it from Manhattan.”
Ms. Rachel Explains What Helped People Connect With Her Advocacy
Despite the backlash she has received, Accurso’s advocacy has resonated with many people concerned about the killings in Gaza.
But that wasn’t always the case. She explained that a shift in her approach helped people connect with her message.
“When I first started talking about Gaza, some people didn’t connect. I realized I had to humanize the kids. That was what needed to happen for people to get involved,” she revealed to the outlet.
She added, “There’s so much attacking in our world, and yelling at each other; it pains me when people don’t have that experience, and so they didn’t see [Palestinian children] that way. But I really believe in people’s ability to learn and change.”
Ms. Rachel Recalls Feeling Like ‘Everyone Hated Me’

Even with the progress she has made, Accurso knows many people still do not support her advocacy.
At one point over the last few years, she felt that the negative sentiment had grown even among some of her supporters. It left her wondering why so many people seemed to take issue with her efforts.
“I thought everyone hated me at one point. I remember calling friends and family members, Jewish and not Jewish, and just being like, ‘Why do people hate that I don’t want kids to be killed and starved?’” she recalled.
Ms. Rachel’s Husband Stands Behind Her: ‘She Genuinely Cares’
Through it all, Accurso has had the unwavering support of her husband, Aron, with whom she shares two children, Susannah and Thomas.
“I’m very proud of all the work that Rachel’s doing,” Aron chimed in during the interview. “She wants the best for all the children of the world. She genuinely cares. I know that, and she knows that. And everything else is noise.”
Ms. Rachel’s Advocacy Extends Beyond Palestine

Accurso’s advocacy extends beyond her support for Palestine. She has used her platform to speak out on several issues affecting children and families.
She previously challenged former New York Mayor Eric Adams over proposed cuts to early-childhood education in the city’s 2024 budget and has also criticized President Donald Trump’s ICE detention practices.
Her work has included fundraising efforts for children caught up in conflicts around the world, including those affected by displacement in Sudan and the war in Ukraine.
Beyond conflict-related issues, Accurso has consistently highlighted the effects of poverty and food insecurity on children as they grow.

Jason Sudeikis And Olivia Wilde’s Split Inspired A Divorce Show
Jason Sudeikis and Olivia Wilde went through a highly publicized split six years ago, and new reports have now revealed just how much the split inspired critical moments in the entertainment industry.
The couple’s bitter dissolution reportedly served as a central reference point for an upcoming television project created and written by George Kay.
Sudeikis and Wilde were engaged for seven years until they eventually called it quits in 2020 and embarked on a high-profile custody battle for their children.

Sky’s upcoming eight-part divorce drama “War,” created and written by Kay, centers on the devastating split between tech mogul Morgan Henderson, played by Dominic West, and his movie star wife Carla Duval, played by Sienna Miller.
While Kay noted that the show remains an original story with fictional characters, he admitted to incorporating “little lifts off real life.” According to the Daily Mail, Miller acknowledged the real-world connection, saying, “It’s awful, and it’s based on a real-life event we’re all probably familiar with.”
The creative premise mirrors the breakup between Wilde and Sudeikis, who began dating in 2011, got engaged in 2013, and share two children, Otis and Daisy, before their split led to a protracted custody struggle.
“I think Carla probably thinks that (the divorce) will be a little bit messy, that she’ll get what she asks for. But at that moment, she decides that it’s too late,” Sienna said.
West added that while his character is initially stunned by the incident, it sets off an all-out confrontation, remarking that “what he does on the declares war.”
Notably, Sky has already renewed “War” for a second season, which will shift into an anthology format focused on a major defamation trial.
‘War’ Follows A High-Stakes Legal Drama Starring Sienna Miller And Dominic West
Besides the narrative ties to real-world celebrity breakups, the television series features an extensive ensemble cast alongside its lead stars, Miller and West.
Created by “Lupin” and “Hijack” writer George Kay, the upcoming drama depicts the intense conflict between rival London law firms Cathcarts & Sons and Taylor & Byrne as they battle over the high-profile divorce of tech entrepreneur Morgan Henderson and film star Carla Duval.
The series features Phoebe Fox and James McArdle as Taylor & Byrne partners Serena Byrne and Nicholas Taylor, alongside Nina Sosanya and Pip Torrens playing Cathcarts & Sons rivals Beatrice “Queen Bea” Ubosi and St John Smallwood, per Variety.
The series premieres October 1 on HBO before streaming on HBO Max, with its U.K. debut following on October 2 across Sky and NOW.
Olivia Wilde Previously Opened Up About The Turning Point That Marked The End Of Her Longtime Romance

While the television adaptation dramatizes high-stakes relationship breakdowns, Wilde herself has previously opened up about the exact personal moment that signaled the end of her real-life romance with Sudeikis.
During an appearance on Alex Cooper’s “Call Her Daddy” podcast, Wilde reflected on how personal relationship dynamics inspire her filmmaking. She pointed to the specific moment in March 2020 following her birthday party when she realized her engagement to Sudeikis was over.
They were driving home when she asked him if he had gotten her a birthday present, and he replied, “What would I get you, Olivia? I don’t know you,” as reported by The Blast.
The exchange made Wilde realize that she and her former partner were no longer on the same page.
The Actress Also Recalled The Traumatizing Onstage Incident

Adding to the emotional toll of the breakup, Wilde also experienced highly public legal disruptions as a result of the split.
According to The Blast, she spoke candidly about being served with custody documents on behalf of Sudeikis while presenting her movie “Don’t Worry Darling” at CinemaCon in 2022.
She described the moment as incredibly traumatizing” and noted that she managed to maintain her composure on stage before breaking down in private.
Jason Sudeikis Opened Up About Dating As An Older Parent

Just as Wilde has struggled to pick up the pieces of her life following the devastating breakup, Sudeikis has also had his fair share of troubles. He recently shared his perspective on navigating single life after ending his long engagement to Wilde.
The Blast reported that the 50-year-old “Ted Lasso” star discussed the realities of stepping back into the social scene as a single father.
When asked whether he was open to having more children in the future, Sudeikis confirmed he would be open to expanding his family if he fell in love again. However, he shared that his head was in a different place and jumping back into the dating pool seemed overwhelming.

New York Man Charged in Murder of Mom Who Was Stabbed
Deputies discovered a man allegedly murdered his mother after they were called to a burglary in upstate New York.
Joseph A. Petrella was charged with second-degree murder in the death of Amy M. Hogan, according to a Tuesday, September 15, news release from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. He’s also charged with second-degree larceny and petit larceny.
Petrella, 39, is accused of cutting and fatally stabbing Hogan, 60, in her torso during a confrontation that occurred at a mobile home in Penfield sometime between Saturday, September 12, and Sunday, September 13, according to a criminal complaint obtained by WHEC-TV.
On Sunday, Hogan’s body was found inside of a bathtub, “wrapped in a plastic shower curtain,” the complaint states.
Several frozen items were packed around her body, according to the filing, which noted there appeared to be an attempt to hide her body.
Deputies were ultimately led to Hogan’s body following a 911 call that came from Petrella’s neighbor, the sheriff’s office said.
The neighbor said a person had broken into their car and home, Monroe County Chief Deputy Michael Fowler said during a Tuesday news conference. They also reported some of their items went missing.
While investigating, deputies “were pointed to” Petrella, who they then questioned, according to Fowler.
During questioning, Petrella invited deputies into his home, where they continued to investigate.
While inside, one deputy noticed unusual signs and became increasingly concerned, Fowler said. Then, Hogan’s body was found.
Petrella was subsequently arrested.
Fowler credited deputies for being able “to identify that there was something much more significant going on here besides just a burglary.”
Petrella was arraigned and ordered to be held without bail at the Monroe County Jail on Tuesday, according to Fowler.
Information on whether he retained legal counsel wasn’t immediately available.
Lori Broccolo, a woman who described herself as Hogan’s lifelong friend, told WHEC-TV that the slain mother “was a best friend to everyone.”
“Finding out how horrible this was for her was hard because she was such a bright light, and I know everyone says that when someone dies, but she lit up a room,” Broccolo added.
Hogan, who was born in Rochester, is survived by her mother, two brothers, four of her children, including Petrella, and two grandchildren, according to her online obituary.
The obituary described Hogan as “a woman of many talents” who enjoyed painting, crocheting, pottery, gardening, cooking and more.
“She was a creative person in everything, and that creativity shone especially bright when she was creating for her family,” the page states. “Whether the creations were edible, decorative, or in making magic for every holiday and birthday, her touch was everywhere in her family and among her friends.”

CBS’ 2-Part Crime Series Is Officially Heading Down a Disappointing Path
Throughout the past few decades, there have been plenty of television shows that have been impacted by behind-the-scenes chaos. Whether rumors swirled because of misconduct allegations, like Kevin Spacey in House of Cards, or co-stars feuding, like in Glee, there’s always the potential that a show’s offscreen drama can lead to its downfall. Sometimes it works to simply fire the offending actor, like Chevy Chase in Community, but that doesn’t always address the deeper issues lurking within a troubling environment on set. Unfortunately, one crime drama currently airing on CBS is following a path that could spell cancellation in the future.
‘Matlock’ Has Been Having Behind-the-Scenes Issues
Matlock, set to premiere its third season next year, is by far one of the best shows on network television. The legal drama showcases an extraordinary, Emmy-nominated performance from Kathy Bates, not to mention a fantastic supporting cast of Skye P. Marshall, Jason Ritter, and Beau Bridges. With an impressive 93% Rotten Tomatoes score, Matlock has been a designated hit for the network. But the show’s problems began when David Del Rio, who played young lawyer Billy Martinez, was fired in October 2025 after an alleged incident of sexual assault. CBS conducted an internal investigation, and Del Rio was terminated. The actor subsequently filed a lawsuit against CBS this March, claiming he was falsely accused and had suffered “substantial professional and reputational harm.” The arbitration proceedings with the studio are still ongoing, but Del Rio was written out of Matlock in Season 2.
These events would have been controversial enough for the drama, but another lawsuit was filed in June, in which showrunner and creator, Jennie Snyder Urman, was accused by former Matlock story editor and writer, John Lowe, of creating a hostile work environment and making both racist and sexually inappropriate comments on set. CBS and executive producers Nicki Renna and Jeffrey Lieber were also named in the lawsuit. Just last week, CBS filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit, disputing Lowe’s version of events. Their filing lists several reasons that Lowe’s complaints are unfounded and is likely to set up a significant upcoming legal battle between CBS and Lowe.
Behind-the-Scenes Chaos Is Already Impacting ‘Matlock’s Storytelling
Matlock‘s legal issues are a lot for any show’s cast and crew to handle while still producing high-quality episodes. Del Rio’s firing has already led to an awkward exit for his character. In the Season 2 mid-season premiere, Billy was out sick, and then his job with Jacobson Moore was eliminated because of staff layoffs. This information was relayed in throwaway lines without any emotion or ceremony. This is likely the best the writers could come up with given the circumstances, and it was probably smart not to give too much airtime to Billy’s exit in order not to highlight the actor’s firing. However, it did feel like an unnatural narrative and was a departure from the show’s usually well-thought-out storylines.
We’ve also recently learned that Season 3 of Matlock will only consist of 13 episodes, which is a far cry from Season 1’s 19 and Season 2’s 16. This reduction is disappointing for fans who have only fallen more in love with Bates’ role as the titular character. The show has been a great vehicle for a truly remarkable actress, and has become adept at twisty storylines that dive into a ton of different fascinating issues. However, at this point, the series is risking becoming better known for its behind-the-scenes problems, and this could spell an early and disappointing cancellation for the series. Perhaps CBS will win the lawsuits, but there’s still a stain on Matlock that will live with the show forever.
Seasons 1 and 2 of Matlock are available to stream on Paramount+ in the U.S. Season 3 is set to premiere in January 2027.
