European Championship darts 2024 LIVE RESULTS: Humphries and Van Gerwen play today, Luke Littler crashes OUT – updates
Ice cold Gilding
Andrew Gilding put in a phenomenal performance to beat Luke Littler 6-4 on Friday night – despite suffering from a heavy cold.
The 53-year-old has now set up a last-16 showdown with Ricardo ‘Pikachu’ Pietreczko.
He said: “I didn’t expect this, watching how Luke had played lately.
“I am always short of self-belief. I never expect to win a game.
“Especially against Luke and especially as I had an awful cold as well. I am on the tailend of that. I felt awful coming up to this.
“I did say beforehand I wanted to cross him off the list. It was the third time I’d played him. So it’s third time lucky.”
Pikachu speaks
Ricardo ‘Pikachu’ Pietreczko reached the second round following a dramatic comeback win over Damon Heta.
The 30-year-old was roared on in Dortmund by 5,000 German fans as he recorded a 6-5 victory.
He told PDC: “Heta is a great sportsman.
“I like to be behind my opponent [and fight back]. It’s all eyes on me now.”
Bully Boy hits back
Michael Smith romped into tomorrow’s last-16 thanks to a dominant 6-0 victory over good friend Dave Chisnall on Thursday.
And Bully Boy – who is facing a ranking slide after recent losses – is not concerned about his game going forward.
He said: “My game at the minute is my own fault from when I won the Worlds, taking virtually a full year out apart from stage events and yeah, I’m paying the price.
“In practice I feel like it’s back to the way it was, it’s back at its best, it’s just not showing on stage at the minute.
“Who knows, it could be this weekend, it could be next week in the Grand Slam or best of all, it could be at the Worlds.”
He added: “You can take the money off my ranking but I don’t lose the titles.”
Second round draw
Sixteen players are through to tomorrow’s Round 2 after two nights of high-quality arrows.
There are some fantastic match-ups in here, with the best-of-19 leg matches getting underway at midday UK time and split across two sessions.
- Ryan Searle vs Luke Woodhouse (12pm)
- Dirk van Duijvenbode vs Daryl Gurney (1pm)
- Michael Smith vs Ritchie Edhouse (2pm)
- Mike De Decker vs Danny Noppert (3pm)
- Michael van Gerwen vs Gary Anderson (6pm)
- James Wade vs Jermaine Wattimena (7pm)
- Luke Humphries vs Jonny Clayton (8pm)
- Andrew Gilding vs Ricardo Pietreczko (9pm)
Not all-Wright on the night
Defending champ Peter Wright was torn apart at the oche then on social media – after the reigning champ’s whitewash loss to Jermaine Wattimena.
Snakebite wobbled to the tournament’s third-lowest average EVER as world No. 40 Jermaine Wattimena KO’d the two-time world king 6-0.
The 54-year-old averaged just 74.81 and failed to achieve even one attempt at a checkout.
A scathing fan posted: “Up there with one of the worst performances I’ve seen by a so called top player.”
Round 1 complete
That’s your lot from Dortmund, with eight players making it safely through to the second round of this year’s European Championship.
Defending champion Peter Wright and Luke Littler are going home, while Luke Humphries looks in imperious form.
Here’s how the night unfolded in Dortmund:
- Danny Noppert 6-2 Joe Cullen
- Chris Dobey 4-6 Jonny Clayton
- Rob Cross 3-6 James Wade
- Ricardo Pietreczko 6-5 Damon Heta
- Peter Wright 0-6 Jermaine Wattimena
- Luke Littler 4-6 Andrew Gilding
- Luke Humphries 6-2 Nathan Aspinall
- Josh Rock 1-6 Mike De Decker

How Shwartzman joined Button in unwanted exclusive F1 club
First practice for the Mexico Grand Prix saw five rookies take to the wheel, but the 60-minute session didn’t go smoothly for two drivers.
Oliver Bearman took charge of Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez but was involved in a tangle with Alex Albon midway through the session.
Albon was charging in his Williams when coming up on the slower-moving Ferrari in the mid-sector Esses but, when about to pass, lost the rear end of his car on the inside kerb and swiped the side of Bearman’s machine, leaving both stranded with terminal damage.
But with that incident still ongoing, Robert Shwartzman – who was controlling Zhou Guanyu’s Sauber for the session – went past Yuki Tsunoda’s RB as the Japanese slowed down, triggering an investigation.
The stewards found the Ferrari junior guilty of overtaking under yellow flags, explaining: “Following the incident at T9 Shwartzman passed a single waved yellow, and a double yellow flag before overtaking Tsunoda in the yellow zone while traveling at speed.
“The penalty is the usual penalty for passing under a double yellow, and while the Stewards recognize that the driver is not scheduled to start the race, they have applied the consistent penalty.”
Shwartzman joins Button on unusual waiting list
Jenson Button, McLaren MCL32
That consistent penalty is a grid drop of five positions for the next F1 race Shwartzman participates in.
However, with the grid almost completely filled for next season and Shwartzman not in the running for any of the remaining vacant seats, it is unlikely he will be able to take that penalty, unless he is called upon in a reserve capacity, like Bearman has on two occasions this year for both Ferrari and Haas.
It is a situation that mirrors one Jenson Button experienced in 2017 when substituting for Fernando Alonso at the Monaco Grand Prix that year.
With the Spaniard competing in the Indianapolis 500, Button came out of retirement to join Stoffel Vandoorne for the Woking-based outfit but during the race, he pitched Pascal Wehrlein into the barriers at Portier.
The stewards then gave the Briton a three-place grid penalty but, where his situation differs to Shwartzman, the incident report explained that punishment was for the “next race he participates in this season”, whereas the latter’s punishment is less descriptive.

Northern Ireland Open 2024 LIVE RESULTS: Semi-final latest as Wilson plays Pang while Trump faces Slessor – updates
Trump card
Judd Trump believes his fast start helped him on the way to a thumping win over Shaun Murphy on Friday night.
The World No. 1 hit back-to-back centuries as he cruised to a 5-1 win in Belfast.
Trump told Eurosport: “The first frame was massive, I think, to nick that and settle into the game.
“Because he looked sharp at the start.
“That’s just something I’m able to do at the moment, just able to recognise when I’m in danger and get myself out of it at the start.”
Brothers in arms
Kyren Wilson has revealed his brother acted as a secret weapon as he beat Mark Williams 5-1.
The Englishman’s impressive win featured a break of 135 in the fourth frame.
Wilson told Eurosport: “I worked really hard before going out for the match.
“I had about an hour and a half solid, solo practice and did a lot of long potting with my brother.
“They’ve got to go in against these top players, that’s how you get in and, yeah, it kind of puts them on edge a little bit and you have to do that or they’ll walk all over you.”
Fantastic four
Tomorrow’s semi-finals will get underway at 10am, with the second match scheduled for around 1pm.
Unlike today’s games, we’re now up to a best-of-11 format.
- Judd Trump vs Elliot Slessor (10am)
- Pang Junxu vs Kyren Wilson (1pm approx)
Quarter-final results
After a thriller in the early game, it was a little bit easier for Wilson, Slessor, and Trump.
The semi-finals are all set for tomorrow in Belfast.
- Neil Robertson 4-5 Pang Junxu
- Mark Williams 1-5 Kyren Wilson
- Louis Heathcote 1-5 Elliot Slessor

- Louis Heathcote 1-4 Elliot Slessor
Latest scores – Slessor on the brink
We have three of our four semi-finalists.
And Elliot Slessor is just one frame away from joining them.

India vs New Zealand: Tourists clinch historic Test series win
New Zealand completed a historic first Test series victory in India with a 113-run win in the second Test that ended the hosts’ 12-year unbeaten streak.
The triumph in Pune gives the Black Caps an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series and ends India’s remarkable run of 18 consecutive home series wins since Alastair Cook’s England clinched a famous 2-1 triumph in December 2012.
After New Zealand were bowled out for 255 on the third morning, India were set 359 to win and maintain their proud unbeaten home record.
Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal’s half-century gave them hope but that was soon extinguished by Mitchell Santner, who took 6-104 to finish with 13 wickets in the match.
India were eventually bowled out for 245 in the evening session.
“Every time you take wickets, you get a little more confident,” said Santner, who had never taken a Test five-for before this match.
“I felt that. Every time I got a wicket, it got a little better.”
The hosts had made a rapid start thanks to Jaiswal’s quickfire 77, but, having taken seven wickets in the first innings, Santner began to work his magic again.
Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Jaiswal all fell to the left-arm spinner before Santner ran out Rishabh Pant and he proceeded to claim the key wicket of Virat Kohli as India collapsed to 147-5.
“It is a collective failure,” said India captain Rohit. “The team has failed to accept the challenge thrown at us.”
There was some resistance from Ravindra Jadeja but the all-rounder was the last man out for 42, leaving New Zealand to celebrate a comprehensive, famous victory.

Max Holloway addresses the future of the ‘BMF’ title, praises Diego Lopes as an ‘animal’ and legit contender
A huge part of the reason why Max Holloway took a fight against Justin Gaethje at UFC 300 was knowing that a win would give him any number of options for his career.
He not only won but Holloway pulled off one of the greatest finishes in UFC history when he pointed to the ground late in the fifth round and invited Gaethje to throw down with him. With one second remaining on the clock, Holloway delivered a stunning knockout that sent Gaethje face first to the canvas as the crowd at T-Mobile Arena erupted with applause.
That fight crowned Holloway as the “BMF” champion but he ultimately decided that his next move was returning to featherweight where he challenges Ilia Topuria for the title in the UFC 308 main event. While the title fight is all that matters to him right now, Holloway knows a win on Saturday puts him right back in that same advantageous position and he promises he hasn’t forgotten about his other belt.
“For sure. I think so for sure,” Holloway said about defending the ‘BMF’ title. “At the end of the day in this sport, the thing that you want is options. I go out there, I get my hand raised. What is the saying? The world is my oyster. I can’t wait for it.”
Assuming he gets through Topuria and becomes a two-time featherweight champion, Holloway understands that there’s going to be plenty of work to do in that division as well.
Winning the title potentially lines up Holloway for a fourth fight against Alexander Volkanovski after suffering three past losses to him. Volkanovski was promised a shot at the belt in his return to action following a knockout loss to Topuria back in February.
Of course, Holloway hasn’t forgotten about the other name in the hat right now and that belongs to Diego Lopes, who is actually serving as the backup fighter for the UFC 308 main event. Whether it’s Volkanovski or Lopes next, Holloway can’t wait for those kinds of challenges as champion.
“He’s an animal,” Holloway said about Lopes. “The way he’s been fighting. Taking fights on short notice. Showing up in those short notice fights and he’s a beast. When I saw that he was the backup, I was kind of blown away for a little bit because of all the talk that Alex was saying that he’s the next guy up in line and this and that and then also, it makes sense that Alex ain’t no backup fighter. They told him he’d get the next title fight.
“It’s just weird that they’re telling Alex he has the next title fight and then to have another guy as the backup. But I guess so. If you look at the heavyweight division, anything can happen in the world. At the end of the day, I think Diego Lopes is a promising upcoming star. He’s not even upcoming anymore. He’s doing what he’s doing. It’s cool. Congrats to him having that moment.”
Before he can think about defending his “BMF” title or really paying attention to who’s next at featherweight, Holloway first has to reclaim that 145-pound title on Saturday.
While he can’t totally encapsulate the feeling of winning at UFC 308 given that it hasn’t happened yet, Holloway has a good idea at just how much another title run would mean to him.
“It’s going to be amazing,” Holloway said. “With all the naysayers, with all the doubters, with all the fanbase that he’s bringing in, the support that he has. It’s going to be great. I can’t wait to go out there and prove to the world.
“To be the best you’ve got to beat the best and the best is ‘Blessed.’ On Oct. 26, I get to show the world again.”

Penny-pinching Man Utd ‘ask Man City to give players lift in private plane to Ballon d’Or’ but get REJECTED by rivals
MANCHESTER UNITED chiefs took an embarrassing hit in their efforts to save money after Manchester City rejected their request for a lift to the Ballon d’Or ceremony, according to reports.
New United part owners Ineos have embarked on a cost-cutting crusade since taking control of the football operation at Old Trafford.
This saw 250 members of staff let go in the summer and Sir Alex Ferguson chopped from his £2million-a-year role.
The latest efforts to cut costs saw United ask bitter rivals Man City if they could give a lift to Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho to go to the Ballon d’Or ceremony.
According to the Daily Mail, City have chartered a private jet to take their players over to Paris for the awards show on Monday.
However, City rejected the request from United because the flight was full with their eight nominees.
The report adds that alternative arrangements have now been arranged.
United had placed the request because the idea of sending two players on a private jet was not seen as a good look.
The club’s carbon-footprint was also said to be a factor.
Sharing flights is a common theme for clubs when players are traveling for international duty from places such as South America.

Premier League champions City have the most players at the awards of any English club.
They have four players in the men’s section of the awards – Ruben Dias, Phil Foden, Erling Haaland and Rodri – and a further three in the women’s award – Yui Hasegawa, Lauren Hemp and Khadija Shaw.
Savinho is also up for the Kopa Trophy award, which recognises the best young player, going up against Garnacho and Mainoo.
However, they are set to be left disappointed, with Vinicius Jr the reported favorite to win the men’s award, though Rodri is said to be his closest challenger ahead of 2023 Kopa Trophy winner Jude Bellingham.
Meanwhile, Aitana Bonmatí is the favorite to retain her crown in the women’s award.
Lamine Yamal is the favorite to win the Kopa Trophy.
