After my divorce settled, and following years spent raising my children and caring for my mother in her final chapter, I began to dip my toe back into the dating pool at 51.

Even though I felt ready to open up to the possibility of romance, I was also very aware of my emotional capacity – what I had the bandwidth to hold and what I didn’t.

I wasn’t looking for a soulmate, nor was I interested in future-tripping, making long-term promises or auditioning for a major role in a partner’s established life.

Before my marriage, my natural inclination had always been toward older men – men with established footholds, refined perspectives and the gravitational pull of maturity. But after a long marriage and years of caregiving, my needs had shifted. I simply did not have the emotional reserve to play a significant role in a partner’s existing domestic ecosystem.

Given that, and at the behest of my curious married friends who urged me to “take one for the team”, I manually adjusted my age preferences on the apps, sliding the scale far enough left that it could be framed as a cultural statement.

I widened those parameters not as a hunt but as an experiment in lowering the stakes. I assumed I was simply opening a doorway to casual conversation. What I didn’t expect was the immediate, enthusiastic response from men 10, 15 and 20 years my junior.

Unlike men in my own demographic, who often carried the weight of past domestic entanglements or rigid expectations, these younger suitors approached dating with refreshing candor, often addressing the age gap upfront with curiosity rather than hesitation, viewing it not as an obstacle but as a primary attraction.

I quickly realised this wasn’t an anomaly; I had stumbled onto a quiet, deliberate movement of young men actively seeking out older women.

Of course, it’s impossible to address this cultural wave without confronting the hyper-sexualised “cougar” or “MILF” tropes that are pervasive in the media. As a result, a not-insignificant portion of the messages in my inbox was inevitably fuelled purely by a fantasy that reduced an older woman to an erotic milestone rather than a person. Distinguishing genuine intrigue from fetishisation was the primary task of navigating this pool.

Still, a substantial segment of these younger men started surprisingly earnest conversations, and one young professional immediately stood out. He was 36 to my 51, but far more mature than his peers, intensely focused on his career, yet looking for adult female companionship.

What began as a series of engaging dinners turned into a meaningful, purposeful connection for both of us. For him, it offered a space to laugh, share and connect, entirely free from the biological clock and domestic pressure cooker of peer-group dating. For me, it served as a gentle, low-stakes step back into a dating landscape I hadn’t navigated in nearly two decades.

Our relationship spanned roughly 18 months – a fluid, unhurried arrangement anchored in complete transparency, mutual discretion and shared pleasure, deliberately unburdened by demands for formal exclusivity or traditional milestones. We remain friends today, and while he still occasionally gives a quiet wink asking to return to that season, we mostly laugh about our time together.

Recently, on a getaway to an upscale Southern California suburb, I overheard a hotel concierge advising guests on a few local restaurants – playfully referred to as “cougar bars” – where younger men gather specifically in hopes of meeting women their senior. Who would have thought? What I quietly discovered on the fringes of dating app filters had spilled into everyday public life.

For generations, the older-man-younger-woman dynamic wasn’t just tolerated; it was the default social blueprint. When high-profile men married partners decades their junior, culture treated it as a standard perk of status and wealth. Society rarely questioned their motives or demanded they defend their choices.

Meanwhile, when the gender roles were reversed, we coined the term “cougar” to paint older women as predatory or desperate, and the younger men who dated them as novelties or “boy toys”. High-profile exceptions, like Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, were usually treated as tabloid anomalies or public spectacles.

Today, that archaic framework is fracturing, largely driven by the cold mechanics of modern dating technology. According to Pew Research, 63% of men under 30 report being single, compared to just 34% of women in the same age bracket. Furthermore, 64% of men report feeling insecure due to a staggering lack of incoming messages on apps. On platforms like Tinder, where the average match rate for men sits at a dismal 5%, young men face a brutal numbers game.

To survive the feed, younger men have learned to game the system. On Bumble and Hinge, a 26-year-old man has to manually slide his age preferences upward to appear in a 50-something or 60-something woman’s queue. Widening his age bracket may partly be a numerical calculation to expand his reach, but it is also a deliberate tactical shift. Rather than chasing low response rates among his peers, he may recognise that mature women operate with far greater clarity, efficiency and directness, making an interaction not only more statistically probable but also of higher baseline quality.

Bumble’s global data shows that nearly 60% of women are open to dating younger men. Meanwhile, Hinge Labs reports that 65% of young men want deep emotional intimacy early on, yet nearly half hold back, perhaps for fear of failing to meet the intense life-stage expectations of women their own age.

This brings us to the core of the dynamic. As The New York Times recently highlighted in its exploration of why younger men are seeking out mature women, featuring commentary from writer Emily Leibert and psychoanalyst Jamieson Webster, this phenomenon sits at the intersection of female liberation and male risk-aversion.

A mature, established woman may act as an oasis for a younger man, offering high-value connection, emotional composure and engaging conversation without demanding that he immediately step into the role of provider, husband or father.

In a culture where young men are overwhelmed by economic instability and shifting relationship expectations, seeking out an older woman may function as a shortcut to low-pressure connection. If she has her own financial stability, her own home and her own identity, she probably isn’t asking him to build a life with her. Her life is already built.

Yet that’s where the friction lies.

Some younger men are drawn to an older woman under the naive assumption that her self-sufficiency will make her “low maintenance”. Younger men may mistake an established woman’s independence for a lack of standards, assuming that because she doesn’t need his financial support or a traditional commitment, she requires minimal effort.

The reality, of course, is the exact opposite. True self-sufficiency comes with firm boundaries, high standards and zero tolerance for playing a supporting role in someone else’s unwritten script. An older woman who has raised children, built a career or cared for ageing parents knows the exact value of her time and emotional investment.

Today, at 62, I look back on that chapter of my life with gratitude, but also with clarity. As a single woman now, my desires have shifted once again, and so has my capacity.

While I still open dating apps occasionally, mostly while travelling, my criteria have evolved. I’ve reopened my bracket to men in their early 50s and beyond, seeking the sharp, intellectually vibrant partners I’ve always aligned with best. I am no longer seeking the low-bandwidth, transitional space that post-divorce life required. Now I’m looking for someone ready for 30-plus years of shared curiosity and real depth.

While Kinsey Institute survey data shows that older women report higher levels of relationship satisfaction and commitment when dating younger men, I believe that satisfaction relies entirely on mutual transparency.

Halloween has come early to Netflix, thanks to the chills and thrills provided by the new season of Ryan Murphy‘s grisly anthology series Monster.

In its new incarnation, the controversial drama follows the 1892 axe murders of Andrew and Abby Borden in Massachusetts, and the subsequent trial of their daughter, Lizzie Borden.

The real-life double murder trial is one of the most infamous cases in history – and has fascinated people since Victorian times.

Once again, Monster’s new cast is filled with frequent collaborators of Ryan Murphy’s, as well as new famous faces and, naturally, a couple of nepo babies.

If you’ve been watching Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story and wondering where you recognise the new cast from, here’s a quick guide to their past work…

Ella Beatty, who takes the lead as Lizzie Borden herself, made her television debut in Ryan Murphy’s 2024 Feud: Capote vs. The Swans.

Besides that, she has also appeared in the Oscar-nominated If I Had Legs I’d Kick You as one of Linda’s patients, and took on a leading role in Act One, an indie drama which debuted at Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year.

Like many of Ryan’s more recent collaborators, Ella has existing connections in the entertainment industry – her parents are Hollywood royalty, Annette Bening and Warren Beatty.

Another return to the world of Ryan Murphy is Charlie Hunnam, who was Emmy-nominated for his role as Ed Gein in last year’s season of Monster.

The Geordie actor is probably best known for playing Jax Teller in Sons Of Anarchy, although keen British TV viewers may recognise him as Jason Chuckle in Byker Grove or Nathan Maloney in the original series of Queer As Folk.

On the big screen, Charlie played Raleigh Becket in Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim, appeared alongside Robert Pattinson in The Lost City of Z and had the lead role in Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword.

He later reunited with Guy for 2019’s The Gentlemen, which later spawned the hit Netflix show of the same name.

Fans of the Netflix horror anthology will also recognise Vicky Krieps for playing Ilse Koch in Monster: The Ed Gein Story.

The German-Luxembourg actor’s breakout role to English-speaking audiences came in 2017, when she played Alma alongside Daniel Day-Lewis in Phantom Thread.

Her other film credits include the romance Bergman Island alongside Tim Roth, the Western The Dead Don’t Hurt with Viggo Mortensen and the family drama Hot Milk, which also starred Emma Mackey and Fiona Shaw.

On television, Vicky also played Simone Strasser in the recent Sky One sequel of Das Boot.

Also no stranger to a Ryan Murphy-produced TV series, Rebecca Hall played FBI agent Jordan Bennett in last year’s The Beauty.

The British actor is better known for her roles on the big screen, making her film debut in 2006’s Starter For Ten, which she followed with an appearance in Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige, alongside Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale and taking on one of the title roles in Vicky Cristina Barcelona, for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe.

While she is best recognised for indie films like the biopic Christine and last year’s Ben Whishaw-led Peter Hujar’s Day, she has some blockbusters under her belt, too, playing scientists in both Iron Man 3 and the recent Godzilla movies.

As for her TV work, Rebecca starred in the BBC miniseries The Listeners and appeared as the paediatric oncologist in episode six of the Seth Rogen comedy, The Studio.

Rebecca has had a busy 2026 so far. As well as Monster and The Beauty, she has appeared in the sci-fi The End Of It, the romantic drama The Man I Love and the action horror Onslaught, alongside her Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire co-star Dan Stevens.

Jessica Barden is most recognisable for playing sceptical Alyssa Foley in the Channel 4 comedy-drama The End Of The F***ing World.

Soap fans may know Jessica from her early role in Coronation Street as Jerry and Tess’ daughter Kayleigh Morton. She later appeared as brutalised sex worker Justine in season three of Penny Dreadful.

She recently joined the world of Ryan Murphy, playing Bestie, Hailey and the casting chairwoman in various different episodes of American Horror Stories.

Jessica also appeared in the HBO series, Dune: Prophecy as the younger version of Emily Watson’s Valya Harkonnen

For her film work, she received a British Independent Film Award nomination for her performance in 2018’s Scarborough, and appeared alongside Monster’s Charlie Hunnam in the boxing drama Jungleland.

Billie Lourd joined the world of Ryan Murphy with a role as Chanel #3 in Scream Queens, which also starred Ariana Grande and Emma Roberts, and has gone on to appear in every American Horror Story season since 2017’s Cult.

Outside of Ryan Murphy’s work, she followed in her late mother Carrie Fisher‘s footsteps when she was cast in a minor role in the Star Wars series as Lieutenant Kaydel Ko Connix.

Her other film roles include Olivia Wilde’s teen comedy Booksmart, the rom-com Ticket To Paradise with George Clooney and Julia Roberts and The Last Showgirl, in which she appeared as the estranged daughter of Pamela Anderson’s character.

You may recognise Joey Pollari for his performance as Eric Tanner in the second series of American Crime, or for his role as one of Simon’s love interests in the 2018 teen rom-com Love Simon.

He has been involved in almost every Ryan Murphy project since 2025, playing the late Psycho actor Anthony Perkins in Monster: The Ed Gein Story, a transformed Mike in The Beauty as well as the upcoming 13th season of American Horror Story.

Outside of the Murphy-verse projects, Joey played Will McKenzie in the failed American version of The Inbetweeners and an air force drone operator in seasons six and seven of SEAL Team, as well as sharing the screen with Colin Farrell in the Apple TV+ drama Sugar.

The Lizzie Borden Story marks the second Monster series Oliver Spenceman has been involved in, after playing a young Tobe in the last season, one of the child actor’s many credits.

Oliver previously made a one-episode appearance in Tiny Beauty Things as a younger version of Nick Stahl’s Lucas, appeared in Apple TV+ comedy Loot and had an uncredited role as a turtleneck-wearing student in the Oscar-nominated The Holdovers.

Sarah Paulson makes a brief appearance in Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story as the real-life murderer Aileen Wuornos (famously portrayed by Charlize Theron in the movie Monster).

The Emmy winner has become Ryan Murphy’s most frequent collaborators ever since playing medium Billie Dean Howard in the first iteration of American Horror Story, going on to have leading roles in every series until 2021’s Double Feature.

In 2016, Sarah earned an Emmy and Golden Globe award for her role as real-life prosecutor Marcia Clark in The People vs. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story, returning to the drama for its third season, Impeachment, in which she starred as Linda Tripp .

Sarah has also worked with Ryan Murphy in 2021’s Ratched and in the critically-mauled All’s Fair, alongside Kim Kardashian and Glenn Close.

In her film career, Sarah has had supporting roles in the Oscar-nominated 12 Years A Slave as the plantation owner’s wife, Carol’s former lover in the Cate Blanchett movie of the same name and Tom Hank’s wife Tony in Spielberg’s political biopic The Post.

She paired up once more with Cate for a leading role in Ocean’s 8, which co-starred her Bird Box castmate Sandra Bullock.
