Celtic Must Go All Out For Andrej Ilic in January
Celtic’s need for a new striker could lead them back to a familiar face, but there are question marks over whether it would be the right move.
As reported by Football Insider, the Bhoys have registered their interest in re-signing Kyogo Furuhashi as the club prepare for the opening of the January transfer window.
Wilfried Nancy is in desperate need of reinforcements in January after what has been a poor start to the season in which Celtic find themselves six points behind league leaders Hearts.
Nancy’s start has been even worse, losing his first four games before a 3-1 win over Aberdeen offered him precious breathing room as pressure built around his job.
But while the Frenchman can breathe a little bit easier right now, the success of the club this term hinges heavily on a successful January window.
Celtic Also Eye Andrej Ilic
With the need for a striker a top priority, Celtic have also entered the race to sign Andrej Ilic from Union Berlin, as per Football Insider.
The 25-year-old striker has enjoyed a successful campaign so far, registering eight assists and one goal in 16 appearances so far.
The Serbian star can play through the middle, or from the right flank, scoring eight goals and providing eight assists since joining the German side from Lille in 2024.
Renowned for his creativity and physical presence, the ‘fantastic’ forward could be a shrewd addition to the Celtic front line.
Celtic Must Look To The Future With Ilic
While a move to re-sign Kyogo Furuhashi would undoubtedly be appealing to supporters, it’s important that Celtic look to the future.
The Japanese star scored 85 goals in 165 games for the Bhoys before leaving for Stade Rennais in January this year for £10million.
Since then, he has struggled in france and is yet to score an EFL Championship goal for promotion hopefuls Birmingham City, whom he joined over the summer.
Given Birmingham’s financial firepower, they’re unlikely to want to sell the striker – who turns 31 in January – on the cheap. A deal will cost a significant sum of money, something which Celtic don’t have. There will also be a diminishing prospect of sell-on potential given his age.
For Ilic, Celtic might not be getting a proven goalscorer like Kyogo, but his all-round game could be really beneficial to Nancy. Plus, at just 25 years of age, the Serbian is yet to enjoy the best years of his career.
Ilic is a really exciting player and if Celtic were to snap up his signature, he could be a real success at Parkhead for many years to come.
