Great-grandad from Horden wins ‘Neighbour of the Year’ award
Alan Bennett, 82, was nominated by his neighbours at John Wilson Court in Horden for his dedication to the community. The nomination was part of Durham Aged Mineworkers’ Homes Association (DAMHA) ‘Good Neighbour of the Year’ competition.
A former miner, Alan was shortlisted alongside several others before a panel of judges unanimously selected him as this year’s winner. The announcement was made during a residents’ forum in December.
One of the people who nominated Alan was neighbour Susan Atkinson, who said: “He helps the whole neighbourhood by devoting his time to collecting all 25 bins each week and putting them back after they have been emptied.”
Another neighbour, Margaret Fearon said Alan goes above and beyond for the residents in the area.
She said: “I moved here a few years ago and Alan made me feel at home instantly. He always keeps an eye out on the street which puts people at ease.
“Alan doesn’t have a car, but he will walk to the shops or get a bus to collect things in town for those who are not able to do so.
“He always takes time to introduce himself to new people when they move in. He is a true gentleman.”

Mr Bennett received a trophy, plaque and a payment of £150 in recognition of his kindness.
The 82-year-old said he was “absolutely thrilled” to win, particularly because his great-granddaughter Stephanie accompanied him to the presentation.
He said: “It was a big surprise but such a nice gesture by my neighbours.
“I have always been the kind of person who likes to help others, but I never expect anything in return.”
Great-granddaughter Stephanie said her great grandad has always been “selfless.”
She said: “It’s lovely to know that people care so much about my great-granddad.
“He has always been selfless like this, and I am so happy I got to share this moment with him.”
DAMHA chief executive Paul Mullis said: “When we considered this year’s nominations, there could only be one winner, and we would like to congratulate Mr Bennett on being a neighbour in a million.”
