Steven Gerrard Expected Big Things From Curtis Jones
Gerrard – who managed Jones in the youth academy for several years – has always publicly backed the Englishman to be a top player. In late 2024, he even made the huge claim that Jones is technically better than he ever was. He told The Anfield Wrap (per Liverpool Echo):
“Curtis is more talented than me in terms of technical, in terms of dribbling ability, in terms of manipulating the ball, close control.”
Gerrard had already backed the now 24-year-old to be a key player under Slot just one month earlier. He told The Times: “I have just known all along that with the right guidance and support, he can become that Scouse heartbeat of the team. ‘And I think he is ready to be that heartbeat now.
“He was a typical young kid coming through. Very technically gifted, very skilful, tight control. He could run, he still had a bit of growth to come.”
Being backed to be one of the best players in the team by one of Liverpool’s greatest-ever players must have been a huge confidence boost for Jones. Not that the skilful dribbler looks short of self-belief.
