Man Utd’s Strongest XI Is Emerging Under Ruben Amorim

Ruben Amorim 'Gave Ayden Heaven an Earful' During Aston Villa vs Man Utd

Manchester United’s season has rarely felt settled, but that uncertainty may finally be forcing some clarity. Injuries and absences have stripped Ruben Amorim of familiar reference points, yet instead of weakening the side, those disruptions are beginning to shape something more coherent. With Bruno Fernandes sidelined and Bryan Mbeumo away at AFCON, United have been pushed into adapting rather than persisting with systems that were never quite fitting.

For a squad that has often looked overloaded with individuals and short on structure, this moment feels important. Amorim has spoken repeatedly about clarity, balance and collective responsibility, and recent selections hint at those principles being prioritised over reputation. The result is a side that looks simpler, more compact, and better suited to the demands of his coaching – even if it lacks some star power on paper.

Why the five-back system suits Amorim right now

The back five is the clearest example of that. Diogo Dalot and Patrick Dorgu give United energy on both sides, but crucially, they’re not being asked to do too much. Dalot looks comfortable in a role he understands, while Dorgu benefits from having protection inside him rather than being left exposed. It’s a setup that plays to strengths rather than highlighting weaknesses.

In the middle, Leny Yoro is in a far better position to grow. Asking a 20-year-old to carry a defence on his own is unfair, but as part of a three, he can be aggressive without everything resting on him. Ayden Heaven brings calm and reliability, and Luke Shaw adds experience and leadership on the left side. Shaw’s presence, in particular, makes a big difference to how balanced the unit feels.

Mount’s role changes without Fernandes

The midfield pairing isn’t flashy, but it works. Lisandro Martinez alongside Casemiro gives United bite and organisation. Martinez reads danger early and isn’t afraid to step in, while Casemiro still offers positional discipline. It’s not the future, but it’s steady – and that’s what United need right now.

Further forward, the biggest change is how Mason Mount is being used. Without Fernandes, Mount isn’t trying to control games – he’s running them. Pressing, moving into space, linking attacks. That’s when he looks most effective. Around him, Matheus Cunha brings intensity and unpredictability, and Benjamin Sesko gives United a proper reference point up top.

It might not be perfect, but it finally looks like a team that knows what it’s trying to be.

What Fernandes injury means for transfer plans

Could Amorim and United look to make moves in the January transfer window to make up for the injury that could keep Fernandes out of action for a month?

GIVEMESPORT correspondent Ben Jacobs wrote about the Red Devils’ transfer plans in his weekly newsletter.

He said: “The injury won’t necessarily change January transfer plans because Fernandes is expected back at some point in January. “However, his absence gives both Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte the chance to show what they can do.Manchester United have also told Mainoo to be patient and wait until the festive period because he’s likely to get more minutes, and that’s even more likely now Fernandes is sidelined. It’s a shame Mainoo picked up a minor calf injury on Saturday, otherwise he could have started against Aston Villa.

“I get the impression United could well do something in January but let’s see whether that’s a midfielder, Antoine Semenyo or defined left-wingback. Either way, they will be spending some of their summer budget if they make a senior addition and that’s why anyone who joins will be viewed as a long-term strategic investment not just a quick fix.”
