S&P 500 Stalls in Quiet Christmas Eve Trading
The stock market’s recent run higher looked set to fizzle out in thin trading on Christmas Eve, as the so-called Santa Claus rally failed to materialize.
The Dow dipped 37 points, or 0.1% shortly after Wednesday’s opening bell. The S&P 500 and tech-heavy Nasdaq were roughly flat.
Today’s session marks the start of the Santa Claus rally period, referring to the final five trading days in a calendar year through the first two trading days of the next one. The period has typically coincided with strong gains for equities.
