Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his impressive form in Tests with a timely half-century, keeping India in the hunt for an improbable win in the second Tests against New Zealand, in Pune.

Chasing 359 runs for a historic win, India went into lunch at 18/1 on day 3, with Jaiwal unbeaten on 46, and Shubman Gill on 22. Skipper Rohit Sharma was dismissed by Mitchell Santner for eight.

Jaiswal raced to 46 off 36 balls with three sixes and as many fours, as India came out with a positive intent, having dismissed the Kiwis for 255 in their second innings.

Resuming on the overnight score of 198/5, New Zealand batters could add only 57 more runs, as Indian spinners Ravindra Jadeja (3/72) and Ravichandran Ashwin (2/97) ran through the lower order. Glenn Phillips was stranded on 48 as he ran out of partners.

India were dismissed for 156 in their first innings, where Jaiswal made a solid 30 off 60 balls.

Australia had hammered India by 333 runs eight years ago at this venue. If India manage to win this Test, it will be their second-highest run chase on home soil. If not, it will be their first home series loss since 2013.

The New York Jets made some major changes to try to jumpstart a once-promising season that was heading downhill.

Robert Saleh was fired as coach after a 2-3 start, interim coach Jeff Ulbrich changed offensive play callers and the Jets acquired Davante Adams to reunite him with Aaron Rodgers.

New York is somehow in even worse shape now.

The Jets lost 25-22 on Sunday to a New England team that had lost six straight and was forced to bring in Jacoby Brissett, the quarterback during the Patriots‘ 1-4 start. Brissett, playing after rookie Drake Maye was sidelined with a concussion, led New England to its first home win in more than a year.

And helped send New York to its fifth straight loss — and third in a row under Ulbrich. The Jets are now tied with the Patriots for last place in the AFC East.

“This is a moment of darkness, and we understand that the outside world is going to get really loud right now,” Ulbrich said.

Added Rodgers: “Yeah, I’ve been in the darkness. You’ve got to go in there, make peace with it.”

Greg Zuerlein missed two kicks — a field goal and an extra point — and the Jets burned through all three first-half timeouts in the first quarter, two of them 44 seconds apart on the same drive.

“On one of them, we were lagging out of the huddle, one I was trying to get the protection right,” said Rodgers, who threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns. “One I felt like we could have gotten off, but it was fine to take it there. Our operation was a little slow at times.”

New York used a timeout after an incomplete pass where Rodgers looked for Garrett Wilson. That timeout would have been handy during the Jets’ final drive that began from their own 30-yard line with 22 seconds remaining.

Another clock mishap occurred when New York drew a delay of game while lining up for a 2-point conversion after Braelon Allen rushed for a 2-yard touchdown with 2:57 remaining. From the 7, Rodgers completed a pass to the 5 and the attempt failed.

“We’ve got to be better from an operations standpoint, just overall, and that’s every single player, every single coach. That’s Aaron. That’s all of us,” Ulbrich said.

Zuerlein missed an extra-point try in the first quarter, then was wide left on his 44-yard field goal attempt that would have enabled the Jets to pad their 16-14 lead in the fourth quarter. The veteran has missed six field goals this season.

Ulbrich insisted he didn’t regret sticking with Zuerlein despite his recent misses.

“We’ve got to take a hard look at everything that we do, everything,” Ulbrich said. “It’s not just on Greg, it’s on all of us. We’ll do that this week.”

Haason Reddick’s debut after a lengthy holdout didn’t provide an immediate lift to New York’s defense.

The Jets allowed a Patriots offense that struggled mightily during Brissett’s five-game run as the starting quarterback to reach the end zone twice during the second half. On the winning drive, the Jets allowed the Patriots to convert a third-and-10 as cornerback Sauce Gardner was defending on the 34-yard pass play that moved the ball to the Jets 9-yard line.

“The NFL is hard. It’s hard to win. Harder when you make it difficult on yourself,” Rodgers said.

Robert Sanchez – 3/10

Pretty poor in all honesty.

A liability in terms of distribution, and while a decent shot-stopper, he consistently seems to be a big question mark in this Chelsea eleven.

Malo Gusto – 3

It looks as though Chelsea may have to choose between Gusto and Reece James to start on the right with them

Failed to impact the game much attacking-wise, and was bettered by Lewis Hall who crossed for Alexander Isak’s equaliser.

Wesley Fofana – 6

Picked up a knock early on and played the rest of the game with a strapped-up knee.

Nonetheless, gave as good as he got against the powerful Alexander Isak for large parts of the game, and made some crucial blocks and tackles throughout.

Levi Colwill – 6

Was fortunate to get away with a clumsy tackle on Bruno Guimaraes early in the first half, but was still fairly solid.

For a man with such an impressive passing range, it felt like he couldn’t quite put it to use today.

Seemingly prevented Alexander Isak from levelling with his aura alone…

Reece James – 2

Playing as a left-centre back it’s hard to see how Chelsea will get the best out of what could be one of the finest attacking wing backs in the world.

He didn’t look comfortable in that position, and let Alexander Isak run away from him for Newcastle’s equaliser.

He came up with two crucial blocks in the second half to deny Isak from making it two or three, before giving him a golden chance to do so which was not taken.

Romeo Lavia – 7

Followed up a brilliant performance in the loss to Liverpool with another good showing in the middle of the park here.

Starting to look like a bargain with performances like these if he can stay fit, as he claimed the assist for Cole Palmer’s fine finish.

Moises Caicedo – 7

Effective in breaking up play for the Blues, and it was a solid showing from a midfield player who has been so good this season.

Steps into challenges nicely at just the right time, and is becoming a dependable figure in the same mould in which N’golo Kante and Claude Makelele were in their time here.

Noni Madueke – 5

Quiet in the first half, but better in the second as he looked to trouble Lewis Hall more.

Was outshone by Pedro Neto on the opposite flank this time out, before being swapped out for Mykhailo Mudryk.

Pedro Neto – 8

So much pace down the left-hand side which was utilised perfectly to leave Livramento in the dust to set up Nicolas Jackson’s opening goal.

Could have had a goal early in the second half as he rattled the post with a header after leaping like a salmon.

Cole Palmer – 9

Started the game well with a cracking finish which VAR ruled out, only to cook the Newcastle defence a matter of moments later with an incisive pass for Neto to set up the opener.

Newcastle simply could not handle the midfield man, who lit up Stamford Bridge early in the second half to claim his sixth goal of the season.

Nonchalance personified, cool Cole showed why he will attend the Ballon d’Or ceremony tomorrow night, and why he can win it in coming years.

Nicolas Jackson – 8

A superb first-time finish opened the scoring for the Blues, and the Senegalese forward did well with the little service he had in the first half – often needing to drop deep to pick up the ball and link up the play.

14 goals in his last 14 Premier League games – leave the Didier Drogba comparisons at home, this is a superstar in his own right.

SUBS:

MYKHAILO MUDRYK (NONI MADUEKE, 67) – 5

Had a big chance to add a third to Chelsea’s tally after replacing Madueke, but his left-footed strike was saved by Nick Pope, who didn’t have to move.

ENZO FERNANDEZ (ROMEO LAVIA, 72) – 5

Didn’t add anything which Lavia wasn’t already giving, but ultimately wasn’t given much time to really impact the game.

MARC CUCURELLA (MALO GUSTO , 78) – 5

Individually, didn’t have a lot of time to show what he’s made of, but Chelsea look like a better team with him in the side.

He plays the inverted left-back role well, allowing Chelsea to get the most out of their right-side.

CHRISTOPHER NKUNKU ( NICOLAS JACKSON, 78) – 6

Had a half-chance late on, which wasn’t taken as he dilly-dallied on the ball on the edge of the box.

Thought he had won a penalty on the stroke of the 90th minute after going down under pressure from Dan Burn, but it was ruled out by VAR.

Lando Norris believes Formula 1 title rival Max Verstappen “got what he had coming to him” after his on-track conduct was dealt with severely by the Mexico Grand Prix stewards.

As the Red Bull Racing driver struggled for pace, he dropped from the lead into the clutches of third-placed Norris and, on lap 10, the Briton made his move.

Unlike in the controversial incident a week prior in Austin, Norris ensured his front axle was ahead of Verstappen’s at the apex of Turn 4, meaning he had to be given racing room.

However, Verstappen drove to the white line, forcing Norris off the track. Cutting the grass, the McLaren driver gained a position off the track, but was soon forced to take avoiding action when, at Turn 8, Verstappen lunged wildly on Norris, again forcing both drivers off the track and retaking second position.

For both instances, Verstappen received 10-second penalties – the first for forcing another driver off the track, and the second for leaving the track and gaining an advantage.

“I don’t think I need to say much,” said Norris. “I think it’s pretty self-explanatory on what happened.

“I did everything I’ve been told in terms of what the rules are and the guidelines and all of this stuff, yet it just wasn’t to be and, of course, he got some penalties for that.”

Regarding the lengths he believes Verstappen would go to topple his title challenge, Norris added: “I go into every race expecting a tough battle with Max.

“It’s clear that it doesn’t matter if he wins or second, his only job is to beat me in the race, and he’ll sacrifice himself to do that, like he did today [Sunday].

“But I want to have good battles with him. I want to have those tough battles, like I’ve seen him have plenty of times. But fair ones.

“It’s always going to be on the line. It’s always going to be tough with Max. He’s never going to make anyone’s life easy, especially mine at this point of the year. But I think today was just… It was not fair, clean racing, and therefore, I think he got what he had coming to him.”

Ahead of the Qatar Grand Prix, discussions will take place between the FIA, the single seater commission and the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association to discuss potential changes to guidelines used as rules of engagement.

These will then be discussed with drivers in Qatar before being implemented potentially for that weekend and the season finale in Abu Dhabi.

The Union government on Friday cleared Indian wrestling team’s participation at the World Championships after all the 12 selected athletes assembled outside the residence of Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and sought his intervention, a day after the WFI withdrew the nation’s entries from the prestigious tournament.

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) was on Thursday forced to pull all three Indian teams out of the championships after wrestler Satyawart Kadian, husband of Sakshi Malik, approached the court against the federation’s decision to conduct trials for the U23 and senior Worlds.

Kadian contended that since WFI is suspended, it was committing a contempt of court by taking decisions.

The WFI remains suspended by the ministry and the IOA has refused to re-introduce the ad-hoc panel, leaving the sport and the future of the wrestlers in limbo. The world governing body UWW has, though, lifted suspension of the WFI in February this year.

“A group of wrestlers met me and apprised me of the issue and their concern. I gave the direction that the court matter will continue in court but the wrestlers must compete in World Championships. They should get this opportunity. Whatever and wherever I needed to speak, I have done that,” Mandaviya told reporters.

The gathered bunch of wrestlers met the minister along with WFI president Sanjay Singh. The interaction lasted about an hour.

“We discussed the issue with the minister, who assured that they will take responsibility if a contempt charge is levelled on the federation and cleared the participation of the team. Tickets have already been booked and the team will depart as scheduled on Sunday morning,” Sanjay Singh said.

Asked if the government has also assured on lifting the suspension, Sanjay Singh said, “The ministry has said it will review it. It may take a one month or so.”

Mandaviya though remained non-committal and did not give a clear answer.

“The government is clear, all federations can work as they want, the government only helps them. Sports should grow in the country and our players should do well both at national and international level,” he said.

During the day, all 12 wrestlers who won the trials for the World Championships sat outside the residence of the minister and sought his intervention.

“It takes 10-12 years to reach this stage where you get to qualify for the World Championships and now this opportunity is being snatched away from us. What is our fault?” Mansha Bhanwala, who made the cut in the women’s 65kg category, told PTI earlier in the day.

“These protesting wrestlers are done with their careers, why are they playing with ours? The junior wrestlers do not need their support. If we are not sent for the World Championships, we will begin a protest of our own,” she said.

Manisha, winner of two bronze medals at the Asian Championships, was relieved that they will now travel to Albania for the competition.

“We explained the issue to minister sir. He listened to us patiently. He assured us all the help. He even discussed how the government plans to support the athletes when India will host the Olympics,” she said after the meeting.

Manisha was accompanied by fellow women wrestlers Mansi Ahlawat (59kg), who won a gold in Almaty and a bronze medal at the UWW Ranking Series event last year in Tunis, Kirti (55kg) and Bipasha (72kg).

Four men’s freestyle wrestlers Udit (61kg), Manish Goswami (70kg), Parvinder Singh (79kg), Sandeep Mann (92kg) and as many Greco-Roman exponents Sanjeev (55kg), Chetan (63kg), Ankit Gulia (72kg) and Rohit Dahiya (82kg) also sat on the pavement outside the minister’s residence after travelling all the way from Haryana.

The wrestlers had first moved court but they were told that their petition can’t be heard on Friday and they can get a hearing date.

They then moved to the sports minister’s residence but could meet him only in the evening.

The WFI had cited government “interference” in its autonomy while conveying to world governing body UWW that it was withdrawing its entries.

The senior World Championship in 12 non-Olympic categories is scheduled to be held in Tirana, Albania, from October 28.

The WFI had recently announced selection trials for the U23 and World Championships, which was challenged as contempt of court by the protesting wrestlers, including Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and her husband Satyawart, who had questioned the legality of the selection by the WFI.
